View Full Version : Does the Pre have an SD slot
Apparently there is confusion between representatives saying MicroUSB, (dragging the U) and MicroSD and no one is really sure. So I started this thread to get the cold facts

No, there is no SD, Mini, or Micro.
You get 8gb internal, available as a drive when plugged in via USB.

I am hoping that by the time the GSM here in the USA released it could be given more.
THEN again, if they have a winner here (not with US PalmOS users but the General public)... may give me reason to update my phone often (as I used to do...) as they develop phones with more memory ala iphone (sorry, I had to TYPE that... lol)

I'm also hoping that the device's software supports access to external storage, allowing a user to plug in a card reader (or possibly use a carrying case that integrates a card slot) for additional storage. Any news on that front? {ProfJonathan}

that the pre had Micro-SD, but in looking at the details page on the official pre website, it's not listed.
While I realize that this is a problem with traditional PDA users (and I've owned a slug of them for the last 10 years...) no one buying an iPhone or iPod Touch (based of the phenomenal sales success of the devices) has complained.
I get the idea that the manufacturers want speed and stability and that with multiple gigabytes of memory being available, have opted for built-in, rather than add-to.
I suspect that like the iPhone, the pre will eventually have sister devices with more memory for those that need or desire it.
For me, I'm saying that 8GB is plenty.
My 8GB iPod touch has tons of apps loaded along with about 6 days, that's 150 CD's worth, of music.
:)

my 8gb centro is full already
palm might be missing a key feature that I'd the pre is highspeed usb then people might also want to carry their lives on it like an external harddrive micro sd is a must.
other things would be a way to power devices with its usb aka plug a keyboard into it or use a double male end to connect two pre's together

We're the gadget freaks here... of course we can fill 8GB of an SD or micro SD card... in my case I have a 16gh SDHC that is almost full...
(btw, it was CHEAPER than an iTouch or Iphone... =D
I heard that palm said that they didn't want to complicate things and that internal memory would make it simpler
For crying out loud a micro SD is so SMALL! and the TI 3440 Processor specs show that its compatible with SD card slots!
They got one thing right when they showed us that it had a removable battery (unlike Iphone) and they need to get this one right too
PALM! we need an SD slot, and with apple leaking that there going to release a new iphone at the time the pre is coming out doesn't make it any better - GET THE SD SLOT!

The Pre as shown at CES is not a finished product. And it is not the ONLY product either. There are more in the pipeline which will come in different shapes, sizes and configurations, so I would wait to see how this develops.

Palm would be pretty stupid if they left out a micro Sd slot.

IT would be an additional feature that will 1-up the iPhone...
(I am a Mac user but I cannot get myself to buy an iPhone...)

Most people, do not know how to use a SD or microSD, they don't know how to access it, they don't know how to format it if they need to, they don't know how to copy a file, or how to get to a file manager. They also have no clue how to backup the card, much less how to restore the info to a new one...
Thatīs why Apple didn't put one in the iPhone.

Does that mean Apple is stupid?
Does that mean Apple is stupid?
No it means Palm should have put just a tad bit more focus on businesses and included a micro SD card
Everyone who owns a Camera knows what an SD card is
Palm could even be smart enough to integrate an SD slot where when you put the card in it integrates seamlessly with your existing 8gb storage and when you plug the phone into the computer.
Turn 8gb into 40gb with a $100 card
Apple is not stupid, they want you to buy a new iphone just to get 4gb more (the 4gb to 8gb 3g)
Palm is stupid for not making the pre more competitive where you can just buy all the gb's you want via sd card
SD card sizes double every year so 8-16-32 - 64 -128- and so on
Apple is not stupid - but not having a removable battery is something pre owners can show off to iphone fans

There are much more phones than cameras. Believe me. I worked at computer store. I can tell you that most of the people bought their Treos or Nokias and NEVER bought a card. Some did and they collapsed...
Regarding the battery, most people don't have a 2nd battery or if they have, they never swapped it. I had a 650 and now a Centro and never changed it. I prefer having a charger at home and one at work which is how I have the phone charged.
And if the lifespan is a concern, who will be using the same phone 4/5 years from now? My TX is 3 years old and 2 months and the battery does not seem to age. :D
Apple is not stupid, they are making things simple (as Palm used to). That way they got users of dumbphones to jump into the "smartphone" wagon.

Does that mean Apple is stupid? As far as I'm concerned, YES! Backing up to a card is very important to me.

Didn't you guys hear about the new SDXC specification? IF the Pre supported it, they'd be GOLDEN. With minimum size of 32gb and a theoretical size of 2TB, why not?

Palm doesn't want people filling up their device memory with important thingses. They want people to store everything on "the cloud".

I'm not sure a card slot is a big deal...I have a 512MB card in my TH55, and it's not anywhere near being filled.

Also consider this:
Palm seems to have partnered, at least on some level, with Google (i.e. Google Calendar / GMail integration) with its Synergy "cloud" synchronization.
Google is working on "GDrive" - basically a large capacity on-line hard drive. With webOS's web-based programming language, it would be (at least I think) VERY easy to write a GDrive application, giving access to your "cloud"-drive and access all your photos and music (Google's PR).
With this in place, all you'd really need your internal memory for would be any files you need for off-line use (airplane mode, etc...)

I don't like the idea of this 'cloud' computing. In the end, it'll mean paying for an application each time it's used - instead of paying for it once and only upgrading when you need to.

Nope.
They're not stupid, they are clever. And greedy. Charging like 80 bucks for a battery. Great.

<Imagine I said something really tasteless> on The Cloud. I get other people's information from it but not my own unless I choose to make it available. If I can't store my own information easily and privately and if I can't move it where I want to absent a distant intermediary then forget it. But, as has been amply pointed out, most devices aren't for people like me/us.
Maybe in later versions.
Maybe.
The Cloud can't be the only way to use this device. We should be able to get data on/off the device via Bluetooth to our own computers. The biggest problem with that is if that's a really slow way to transfer data, or if you have too much for the size of the internal memory. On my 680, I have a 4Gb card. and that's okay for my needs right now. But if I did much with video, it might not. Now the Pre has 7.4Gb internal memory. But it's camera takes bigger pictures too. And as my music library expands, maybe it will be come an issue. Just not right now. And another consideration: will WebOS apps take up more memory that POS ones? I haven't heard if they will be more compact, about the same, or more expansive.

One of the reasons why I can't really consider my iPod Touch to be a true PDA (besides no cut&paste) is that there's not much of a way to get things OFF the device to use elsewhere. There is a clugy thrid-party solution for Notes, for example, but in many ways I'm pretty-much hamstrung.
With traditional PalOS for instance, my data from apps is backed-up on my host computer. With the Touch my "backups" mean NOTHING. NONE of my data is really backed-up, at least in the way that PDA users are used to thinking of it.
Will the Pre follow Apple's lead and will cloud-computing mean that I have less access to my data or more?
