View Full Version : NVBackup NEW backups aren't working (blank)

I posted in other threads about how wonderful my new card is and that everything is going smoothly - WRONG! I apologize if I misled anyone, but when I was first looked all I noticed was that after a month of NVB not finishing a backup, it seemed to finish fine. To my utter dismay when I opened one of the backups to check it there were NO files in the set!!! If I do any new backup, either scheduled or manually, it finishes and is blank, on the other hand if I do an update it works fine (although there is no log file).
So new backups DON'T work, updates DO work.
I'm stymied as to the cause.

I had the same problems with my 8Gb ADATA card on my TX with NVBackup.
1st backup -- finished with errors but the set is empty.
I ran it again: still errors and still empty set.
I ran it the third time: now it created files on the card, but the card acquired a bunch of cluster errors as the subsequent chkdsk indicated.
I just gave up on NVBackup at that point..

I hoped this was just me so there would be a solution. I wonder what the difference is between a new backup, which doesn't work even though it says it does, and an update that does work?????? Since other backup apps seem to be working fine (I checked this time), could it be that NVB doesn't play well with SDHC?
Maybe Alex or Dmitry will chime in?
<cyberdude hopes, as he looks longingly at his TX which is not acting nicely>

Weird. I don't have any problems with NVBackup and either existing or new backups on my Treo 755p. I currently use a 8 GB microSDHC card from Kingtson (via a miniSD adapter). Which version of NVBackup are you using (I use 1.21).
Cheers.

Maybe that's because the 755p supports sdhc cards natively. The TX needs the SDHC driver from Dmitry. I guess that means there is something with the interaction of the driver and NVB.
BTW, I use NVB 1.22b6 and have had few problems with it on non sdhc cards, using the SDHC driver, and virtually no problems on the same cards without the driver? Could this be a driver issue - HELP Dmitry!

Same here, no problems with updating, new backups, selective or full restores. Centro + 4GB microSDHC.

Wow. I was not even aware that a version newer than 1.21 exists. So I did some research and found a version NVBackup 1.22b9 (http://mytreo.net/downloads/nv-backup,1090.html) Perhaps this would solve this problem?

Hi again, Cyberdude :-)
I assume you tested it with warpspeed switched off ;-)
Althought problems of mine (solved) were completely different ...

PS. I use 1.21. Whats new in 1.22b?

Well, let me chime in again
First of all, I had a 4GB card for almost a year and I had no problems with backups or anything.
As soon as I upgraded to an 8GB card + SDHC, the problems started.
So, I believe that we need to compare experiences only for cards >=8 GB.
I am on my second 8GB card now and I am disgusted. They simply don't work in the palm. Besides all the errors during backups (with any backup software), all of a sudden, the card just goes Kaput! and loses all the data.
I don't really care much for lifetime warranties if all I am getting is a piece of junk replacing another piece of junk.
So, I am switching back to 4 GB Ridata card, which has not failed me once
(and waiting for a miracle..)

I haven't tested with warpspeed off yet. Will do this weekend. I did find another interesting thing, since I changed the warpspeed settings to 468 for sys default the manual updates are no longer working either!
Contrary the experiences of vovka1965, I have not had problems with either Backupman or Resco Backup Pro on my 16gb a-data card with SDHC driver (of course).
It should be noted that chiming in here saying that your centro or treo work fine, although interesting, is not helpful since these devices, AFAIK, support SDHC natively and therefore do not use the PowerSDHC driver from Dmitry.
I just tested mine and it is doing fine with NVBackup 1.21 (since updates are usually more bug fixes than new features, I take the if it ain't broke don't update philosophy). I even did a new backup and restore to confirm. This is with the Adata Class 6 16Gb card, which has been flawless for me. I checked all my backups going back to October (before the PCB replacement).
Everything is working fine.

Is this on your TX? If so I'll be going back to 1.21 to check out if it works on my setup.

I remembered why I upgraded to the beta - I wanted the ability to use range selection on selective restores. But if 1.21 works I'll go back anyway!

No I don't
Hmmm... So far everyone who has it working is NOT using warpspeed. Anyone using warpspeed and NVB with a SDHC card on a TX?
I just tried it with warpspeed disabled (enabled box unchecked then reset device, then did new backup). No luck, it still doesn't work. :(

Hi:
I have a TX with a 16GB Adata Sd card. I'm using NVB 122b9 and have warpspeed enabled, though only overclocking a couple of applications. I did a new NVB backup last night without a problem. So far it's been smooth sailing with the Adata card.
If there's any way I can help test this problem, let me know.

Hi cyberdude,
here are some of my experiences with NVBackup & 8GB / 16GB Transcend SDHC Class 6 Cards:
Treo 680, NVBackup 1.21
- 8 GB: No problems
- 16 GB: No problems with first Backup, updates not possible (frozen device or coruppted data)
Treo 680, RescoBackup 2.20
- 8 GB: No problems
- 16 GB: frozen device
(I think it's an problem of reco backup, but I'm not sure)
TX with PowerSDHC, NVBackup 1.21, Warpspeed On
- 8 GB: No expierence
- 16 GB: frozen device or coruppted data
(but I'm not sure wehter it's a real problem caused by interaction between Warpspeed and NVBackup)
Warpspeedsettings: PowerSDHC 416 MHz, System 208, NVBackup as System
TX with PowerSDHC, NVBackup 1.21, Warpspeed Off
- 8 GB: No problems
- 16 GB: actually No problems, some days ago new data corupption found on TX.
dmitry wrote, that we don't use warpspeed for SDHC, so thats the possible reason for one case.
Another possibility for your experience is the newer NVBackup Version.
Third possibility (in one of my cases): Datas on TX are corrupted inclusive NVBackup!!! After restore of an older Backup it was stable again.

Thanks Gwidion!
If I read that correctly you're saying it's possible NVB is corrupted on my device. I tried installing NVB 1.21 from my computer and the result was the same. I reinstalled 1.22b9 (a newer beta) after downloading from web, and also had the same problem. So let me delineate it as clearly as you did:
All on TX:
NVBackup 1.21 with warpspeed on/off
with PowerSDHC and 4gb SD card - Works
with PowerSDHC and 16gb A-Data card - blank
NVBackup 1.22b6 with WS on/off/off system
with PowerSDHC and 4gb SD card - Works
with PowerSDHC and 16gb A-Data card - blank
with PowerSDHC and 16gb Transcend card - BLANK
NVBackup 1.22b9 with WS on/off system
with PowerSDHC and 4gb SD card - Works
with PowerSDHC and 16gb A-Data card - blank
BackupMan 2.2 with WS on
with PowerSDHC and 4gb SD card - Works
with PowerSDHC and 16gb A-Data card - works
with PowerSDHC and 16gb Transcend card - works
Resco Backup Pro 2.21 with WS on
with PowerSDHC and 4gb SD card - Works
with PowerSDHC and 16gb A-Data card - works
with PowerSDHC and 16gb Transcend card - works

Hio cyberdude,
it looks like that your TX in combi with NVBackup didn't work.
Two suggestion for Trail:
1.) Look with RexcoExplorer into your Palm_DM Folder in the hidden driven. Is there everything ok? On my Treo there were in the past sometimes rubbish data fragment with %&&!" and other character and folder.
(But I have never seen on my TX, so bad chance)
2.) Make an Backup from the current TX (best with NVBackup and 4GB SD-Card ;) )
Then hardreset and restore a much older Version (e.g. from October)
Test, if the problem is still there. => If it work, it is an problem of your current software, but not nvbackup...
We're discussing PowerSDHC, NVBackup and other Backup Program, but I've learned over the time, that sometimes there is an indirect relation between some programs. For example: I've never get Agendus in stable running Version. Datebk were no Problem... (Nothing agains Agendus, I think it is an incompatibility to another Palm Program, but I've never found which it was / there were).

The last stable version of Agendus I have found to be version 9.06. So versions 10, 11, 12 and now 13 most likely aren't stable. No one appears to ever find it. Although my guess is that the outter shell may be stable and all the new features are having a conflict as you say with some Palm application, or maybe the OS itself.

I'm not that good with photoshop (and someone else was nice enough to do my avatar for me, although I created an animated version). Let's just suffice it to say that if I could do it it would look something to the effect of feet sticking out of a concrete wall because this suit doesn't come with a rearview mirror and the cape would be drooped over my head.

It started working again - by itself. I just looked at NVBackup, expecting to have to reset my device after launching NVB (which is what was happening when it didn't just come up with a blank backup set). But low and behold a regular backup was there with all the relevant files!
I though about it and only one significant event occurred that may have affected this. I was doing a review of Propel (see sig) and one of my problems was in trying to move apps between tabs, they kept being moved to the card. This happened with the SDHC driver. I then reinstalled the driver from my computer and NVB has successfully backed up ever since.

Is NVBackup 1.22b9 the latest version?
Will it be uploaded on sourceforge.net?
Or can anyone tell me the pruss.mobi download link?
Thanks!

Same problem with NVBackup 1.21, 1.22b7 and 1.22b9.
SDHC cards, 4 and 8 Gb (kingston, C4 and C6, resp) and SD card 2 Gb (trascend):
Blank backups all the time, with or without Warpspeed changing NVbackup's speed. At the beginning I used to get incomplete backups or corrupted, but, I don't know why, I only get blank backup sets now.
I finally gave up and purchased RescoBackup (I live in the Eurozone, so I saved 33% with the current dollar exchange rate).
I successfully created and updated backup in all those cards. And fast! Also, zip files can be accessed from my pc.
I liked the simplicity of NVBackup better, but since my TX is loaded with hacks, I have suffered the reset loop twice (at the beginning), and Blazer is acting his way, I really depend on reliable, scheduled backups.
