View Full Version : Help with wi-fi hotsync (internet ok)
I have looked through the threads (including Larry's summary thread on wireless hotsync) and have noticed a lot of poeple have had problems connecting their wi-fi clies to the internet while being able to hotsync wirelessly.
My problem is exactly the opposite:
I just got a WL110 card for my nz90 tday and have been able to surf the net using both netfront and webpro. But wireless hotsync is not working. When I initiate hotsync I get a message saying "connected" and then a warning message a few seconds after than indicating that 'connection between your handheld computer and the desktop could not be established. Please check your setup and try again."
I am using a DLink Wireless Broadband Router.
Any help much appreciated.

Check list
In the HotSync app
Modem Sync Prefs: Network
LAN Sync: LAN Sync
Primary PC Name: double exclamation points, very important
Right Click on the Hot Sync Manager Icon in the desktop PC's system tray: Some using Windows 98 had to select modem instead of network

Larry, I had all the items you suggested already set EXCEPT for LAN Sync; I had it on Local Hotsync as suggested by (http://www.otakunozoku.com/wifihotsync/). This is one of the links you put together in the pinned thread.
Still no luck with wireless hotsync.
btw I am running XP on my PC.
IP and DSN addresses in the wirelessLAN setup (on clie preference) are set to auto.

The ISP and DNS are for the internet.
Did you try selecting modem instead of network at the HSM in the system tray? Oh, I just remembered, do you have a firewall enabled? Especially the one that comes with Win XP. That will kill the HotSync! ! !
Larry, thanks a lot man!! I disabled the xp firewall and wireless hotsync is working!!
I actually came across the firewall issue in the DLink (my broadband rounter) manual and disabled the only firewall I was aware of (my antivirus program has built-in firewall)....it didn't occur to me to disable xp firewall.
You've made my day.

After trying for what seemed like hours to Hotsync with Sony Wifi card, I finally changed the primary pc name to [!!] after reading this thread and it worked immediately and flawlessly. There is absolutely no mention of this [!!] in either the Clie manuals or in the WiFi card instruction book which renders them basically useless IMO! Why would they omit such a small but vital piece of information?

He-he, if you read the Sony documentation, it says basic networking knowledge is required, hardy har har!
In the last line of the book, it says to erase the primary PC name and it will HotSync one time. So each time you erase the name, it will HotSync.
Actually the primary PC name is supposed to be a domain name as per an network engineer who said this is basic networking 101, right...
The double exclamation is known as a null string, so knowing that, it satisfies the PC making it think there is a domain name somehow.
It's like fighting city hall, so there you have it :D!

Thanks for all the guidance. I have followed all instructions on this thread and still am having no luck hot synching via WLAN. I have a D-Link wireless router, so maybe the built in firewall is keeping this from happening?
BTW, I have no problem connecting to the net and e-mail on the Clie vis the same WLAN.
