View Full Version : Is MS a MUST for NX?

Hello,
My NX is on the way and am excited about it. Couldn't wait for the next NX anymore.
I have read somewhere, I don't remember exactly where, that MS is a must for NX. Now, I have many CF cards already and just wondering if I use the CF drive without a ms?
Also, what are the advantages, beside speed, that the MS Pro has over the standard MS? I will be strictly using the MS for the NX.
Thanks in advance,
John

i use MS mainly because i only have sony stuff.. so they are a must for me.. but i would say extra memory is still a must for the NX.. otherwise it can become cluttered and too easily max'd out.. i would say you need at least one.. MS for back ups and such like.. but i think your cf cards will suffice for your movie and mp3 needs.. i will defer to the greater knowledge on specific programs..and whether they run effectivly on CF
I don't think so. I had a 128 MB Memory Stick to hold me over until my 512MB one came in from Amazon. I have never needed the MS since going CF. The driver WILL get better. Possibly supporting MSImport in the future, but, for now, I am pretty happy not having to be bound to Sony's proprietary BS.

If you want all the good stuff, yes, invest in one. There are actually a couple ways to go about it.
You can not worry about being tied to Sony's media format and just go with a 128MB stick (or invest in MSpro, probably more worth it). MSpro holds more, and depending on what you plan to do with your NX (taking lots of pics/movies or holding lots of mp3s/misc. stuff might require a high capacity MSpro, while not using these things wouldn't need such high capacity media).
OR
Buy a CF driver and get/use a CF card. Take warning, while the driver will get better and be more seamless with the NX as time goes on, if you want instant gratifacation with all features, then this is probably not the route to take.
Some people have both, either way, if you want to fully expand your device, you're probably going to need one of these.

The simple answer is yes, you need an MS. Some things don't function without one.

Yes, a regular MS is a must, even if it's a small one that you can back up to. With MS Pro or the CF, if you have to do a hard reset and you want to restore while away from your PC, your up the creek without a paddle. I keep the system update patch, WiFi driver, CF driver, MS Pro driver, and Jack Enable on my MS. Besides that some files will not restore from a backup and other media needs a driver, what do you do?
Get a memory stick and one day you will kiss me for recommending it, yucky :D!

Yes get one. Even with CF its nice to have that extra even 16MB there that you know will work for all...and for backup reasons like n2ifp said

Thank you guys and gals for your informative posts. I guess I will have to get one then.
"With MS Pro or the CF, if you have to do a hard reset and you want to restore while away from your PC, your up the creek without a paddle. "
N2ifp, even with the MS Pro patch (driver), there is still that problem in hard reset when away from my PC? If that is so, then I assume that it is best to get a standard ms. Either a standard or a Pro, I am thinking about getting a 256MB ms.
Talking about the standard ms, if I understand correctly, there are two types of standard 256MB ms, one kind is the 128x2 and the other is the "select" ms, is this correct? If so, is one better than the other? Additionally, I have seen listings like "256MB MEMORY STICK PRO MSX-256." Is this the "select" ms?
The price of the pro isn't much different from the standard, so if MS Pro driver takes care of any possible problem, then I would rather go with the pro. But as this may be my only MS, if the pro is going to have problem, then I will go the the standard route.
Your input is much appreciated.
Best,
John

John,
Yes, please obtain a standard MS, some have found out the hard way with the MS Pro. The problem is initially getting the driver insatlled to restore from the MS Pro.
I keep backups on two seperate sticks. My case can hold several of them so it's not a problem :)

Hi there,
I am pretty sure that the "Select MemoryStick" is the 128MBx2 MemoryStick that you mentioned above. These MS have a switch behind which lets you select between Side A or Side B (128MB each side) to use. You can only use one side at a time. You need to eject the MS, flick the switch, re-insert the MS, in order to switch sides.
I believe this is due to the fact that the original MS specifications had a limitation of 128MB. And Sony came out with the "Select MemoryStick" idea in order to work around this limitation. Its kinda like having 2 x 128MB MemorySticks in one physical MS.
The only 256MB MemorySticks available at this moment are the "Select MemoryStick" and the MS Pro.
And like mentioned above, I would avoid buying the Pro because of backup/restore problems, since you need an additional driver in order for the MS Pro to be recognized.
Cheers!

Right, the "memory stick duo" as it's called by many.

Hi out there,
well all works better with MS but you SURE can use you cheap CF's instead (for music, pictures...) There exists a new CF-driver from ERUWARE (www.eruware.com) which works very fine.
Only the IBM Microdrive makes a lotta probs!

When I got my Clie I got a 128Mb MS as I wanted to use it for backups etc. ; also I can share the MS with other devices such as my sony camcorder etc.
I would highly receommend getting one (does not have to be 128Mb - depends on your needs)

Not sure if you're just being ironic or funny ... But actually, the official named "Memory Stick Duo" is the half-sized memory stick, which is not the same as the Memory Stick Select, which is a full size Memory Stick with two separate 128 MB sections.
And that's not even mentioning Memory Stick Magic Gate with ATRAC3 support or Memory Stick PRO Magic Gate without ATRAC3 support or Memory Stick ROM, or Memory Stick I/O Expansion Modules (both conceptual and real).
Don't get me started ...

You guys and gals are wonderful! I appreciate your patience and willingness to indulge me with my thick skull.
I have purchased a "select" ms and look forward to receiving it later this week. I am greatful to findout about the MS Pro situation with NX because before this thread, that was all that I was thinking.
You saved me much headache and mucho $$$, especially when I have to buy another standard MS had I purchased the Pro.
Best to you all,
John
