Good forum.

I've laid mu hands on a Treo Pro and I love it!. So far that is. It is a very evolved smartphone compared to the 650 and 680 that I've used in the past. Mobile Windows is "interesting". The best thing about it is the form factor. It's only 1/2 inch thick, so it fits in my shirt pocket nicely, which is the main reason I wanted to try it. Now, maybe, my Tx and Razr can "retire"......

I've had a Treo 680 for a year or so, and I feel the itch to have a change. Is the Pro DEFINITELY going to be better than the 680, does anyone think? Or, if not, is there any advantage in getting a Centro? Or do I have the best available machine already?

I have a 680 and ended-up hating it simply because it won't work in my shirt pocket. Too bulky. The Treo Pro is so sweet. Nice and slim light and packed with goodies. I was worried about the new operating system, but Windows Mobile is fine. I had to buy some new software to get my set-up, but so what? I KNOW it's better. Buy one with the right to return within 30 days and take it for a spin....... nothing tp lose.

i've had my Pro for a little over a week. it is my fourth. I replaced a 750 to with it. It isn't lightyears ahead of the 750 but a big improvement. I wanted the WiFi, the higher res screen, and greater on-device storage. Everything works just a bit better. Phone signal is better, web connection more stable, easier to read small fonts.

I'm not a fan of Windows Mobile. Would prefer the PalmOS, but my IT group doesn't support it.

Don't know how you would use it, but the PalmOS versions of the Treo, aside from the form factor, provides much of what the Pro does for WinMobile.

I've lived with the Centro for a few months now and wish I would have made a different choice. When I look at my wife's HTC Touch (or any of the other newer smartphones coming out), my Centro looks very old and clunky. I am soooo tired of looking at Garnet!

This Centro will be my last PalmOS device (especially after seeing screenshots of ALP, or whatever they are calling it :( )

@ WildCelt

I too have the Centro post T|X and I know it seems like a millennia but I'd encourage you to hold out 'til Palm OSII/Nova there are several aspects of Garnet that are STILL yet to be matched by competition though it is dragging it's feet horrendously in other areas.

OSII/Nova is gonna grab the best and make it sublime, with the management and financial invests that have been made, they pretty much can't get it too wrong.

Anyone would understand if you are not willing to wait though.

How much longer will Palm be using Palm OS? Palm has been moving more and more toward Windows Mobile like the Pro. Palm is a phone company now. The industry as a whole is standardizing around Windows Mobile. Moving to WM ain't so bad. There might not be as many system level hacks as with Palm OS, but how many of those are really worthwhile? Other than that, there are a lot of WM applications. There has been talk for years now about a new version of Palm OS, but where is it?

A quality recent interview with Ed Colligan Palms forward direction can be found here:

Good article. Thanks
".........
At the same time, Palm will continue to promote the Treo line of Windows Mobile smartphones to business customers. “Microsoft is the de facto standard in corporate email, and I think they should be the de facto standard in mobile email. If you have an Exchange server today you can already get mobile push email without installing a single other piece of third-party equipment, so it’s pretty easy to deploy. I don’t believe we could ever create a position in the business community that competes with Microsoft, it just wouldn’t make any sense.”

That ‘next generation’ Palm OS will slot in between the Centro and Treo lines under a new ‘prosumer’ brand that’s yet to be decided, Colligan explains. “We’re going to continue to look at those three line areas – consumer, prosumer and enterprise. Treo is today more of our mainstream prosumer product which is extended into the enterprise, but over time you’ll see some branding work done on the top two to make sure they’re really well delineated.”

Seems sure that Palm intends to be a phone company, so the Tx is the end of the non phone Palms.

The Palm OS 2 apparently will be an in between line of product. Between a low end Centrino and a high end Treo.

I've got a Treo 680, and it's bulky. Would the best of both worlds be a Centro in your pocket and a TX in your bag? But is there enough memory on the TX, and can you rely on the BT connection for everything you need?

In particular I'm worried about what I read on Amazon: (see below) Are these problems still there?

This is what I found on Amazon.co.uk:

"Before deciding to purchase a Palm TX, you would be well advised to type "Palm TX digitizer problem" into Google. You will discover a very common build quality problem with this device. The problem is that at some time between 2 months and 10 months of use, the touchscreen will fail. Attempts to carry out a soft reset of the device results in an endless loop with the touchscreen program, which can only be exited by pressing the "home" button. A hard reset results in the same endless loop, but this time it cannot be escaped from. Several commentators on the web advise that in addition to the known digitizer problem, there are also software issues which cause this endless loop."

Having tinkered with my Treo Pro for a few weeks now, I've come to the conclusion that it's the best of all worlds. Mine isn't cracked. It hasn't done anything weird yet. It backs-up and restores without a hitch using the native back-up application. It supports SDHC (micro), so 8 gigs works right well. It has GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth that all work. A few WM applications and it does what I want it to, which doesn't include feature length video, although it streams TV off the web right well. AND it slides into my shirt pocket rather neatly. I've got a couple of Treos (650 and 680) and Txs (flash and Rom) available to someone who can offer them a good home .......... and pay a minor amount of "adoption fees" :D

After agonising for a long time I've just made the big, big mistake of getting a Centro to replace my Treo 680. Waste of money. Yes, it's a bit smaller but it seems just as heavy; and the keyboard is ridiculously poky. Should I have hung on for the Nova or crossed over and gone for the Treo Pro?

Cross-over of course. The Treo Pro is great.

If you want a pocket-sized device, and can't wait, the Treo Pro may be good for you. It's doesn't seem to be a bad unit.

But I'm waiting to see what Palm shows at CES, which is what, next month?

My 755p is going to need a battery, some time next year, so I'm not exactly disinterested.

I've been testing a WinMob 6.1 device. It's much better than my first PDA, a Uniden PC100, running Windows CE. I've since had a Visor, Visor Pro w/Visorphone, T|T, T2, T5, TX, and my 755p (and my wife's 2 Clies). Actually, I still have most of 'em... :p

But I miss the big screen of my TX, so I'd be more interested in an HTC Touch Pro (want the keyboard and big screen), if I don't like what Palm morphs into. I'm a DateBk fan, and Pimlico is coming out with a cross-platform PIM, so I'm pretty much covered there... :D

How is your Centro going? I found it took some time but I adapted to the keyboard.

I'm running TakePhone, TealOS, fontsmoother and skinUI and it is like a new device entirely. Are you running any launchers?

I tried using the Centro for a while but I went back to the 680 and have stayed with it. Perhaps my fingers were just too big for the keyboard!
