View Full Version : Clie SJ alarm volume and alarm software
Well gang, I have to admit to being caught by surprise on this one. It seems that the 3rd party app alarm packages for palm are not compatible with the Clie.
So, since I can barely hear the standard alarms since I got the SJ22, I am looking for some advice and suggestions on alarm replacements.
Thanks everyone,
Kev

I used AlarmMaster on my SJ30... but no package is going to help you with the speaker volume.

The SJ33 has a polyphonic? (i think that's the term) speaker which provides much louder alarms than the SJ22 & other Palm OS devices with just the simple tone speaker. It can be a bit startling at times when you're used to other Palm devices that don't have the feature. (which is good since you want to hear your alarms!)
Sorry for the lack of technical terms, if something works well I don't spend much time worrying about all the specs :)

so what paulnd is saying, or what i'm understanding is that the sj-22 has the "you left the key in the ignition or the car door is open" sound while the sj-33 has a regular speaker?

Basically that's it. Someone can give you the "techy" explanation I'm sure. You can actually convert your own .wav files from the PC to play as alarms on the SJ33 which you can't do on the SJ22. If possible try one in a local store, there's a sound utility on the SJ33 which lets you test out the various preinstalled sounds.

The SJ-33, like PaulNB said, has a polyphonic speaker. This means that it can play more than one tone at once, just like a stereo's speaker, a headphone speaker, or any speaker that you can hear music out of. However, the SJ-22's speaker is monophonic, which means that it can only play, you guessed it, one tone at a time. That's why the speaker is not capable of playing music.
Being that it's such a basic (and fairly cheap) speaker, I am under the understanding that the volume cannot be made any louder without opening up the Clie and making some electrical changes. And who would want to do that? (Well, I guess I would, but then again, I might break it, and who would want to do that? :D)
