As I am new to PDA's, could some one please advise me on how to set up my TG50 to work on the internet.

I have installed Net front but what information do I need enter in the network settings?? Do I need to subscribe to some WAP ISP to obtain user ID etc???

Someones help would be greatly appreciated.

natdog_21... I just got TG-50 setup yesterday, and I'm able to surf over bluetooth and my laptop. I can also sync over bluetooth. What exactly are you trying to do? How do you want to connect to the internet? Bluetooth and a phone? Bluetooth and a laptop? Bluetooth and an access point? IR and any of the prior? WiFi add on card?

rg1,

I'm trying to surf over bluetooth and a phone. I have managed to get the PDA to connect to my phone via bluetooth but I am having problems with the network setting.

I have tried to enter the settings which I use for my home ISP, it dials up and gets to the Sign In bit and then just times out.

I'm not sure if I need to register with some WAP ISP like you would do for your phone?? If this is the case can you recommend an ISP?

OK. Here's what I had to do.
--------------------
On the Clie:
Under Preference and the Bluetooth pulldown, you'll want to make sure your Clie is paired with your laptop.

Under Preferences and the Connection pulldown, create a new connection. You want "Connect to: PC", "Via: Bluetooth", "Device: <your_laptop>" (where your laptop paired name is there). Under details, set the speed to 115,200 and leave the flow control to auto.

The go into the Preference and the Network pulldown. Create a new service (from the menu pulldown). Name it what ever you like. DO NOT enter a username/password. Set "Connection: <your_connection>" (you set this up in the last step). Under details, use "Connection Type: PPP", "Timeout: Never", "Query DNS (checked)", "IP Addr: (auto checked)". If you tap scripts, make sure it is just "END:".

OK. The Clie should be all set to go.
--------------------
On the PC:
Make sure your BT dongle (or built in) is on. I'm using XP so I'll describe what I had to do (the PC stuff was the harder part for me).

Your BT setup should include a 'local area connection'. Make sure this is ENABLED in Network Connections (under the control panel). If you go into the properties for this connection, I have "Net Firewall Service" UN-checked. Also, under the Authentication tab, I have "Authenticate as a computer when information is available" UN-checked. The other settings were left as is.

Now, you should have another connection, your connection to the internet. Whether it's dialup or ethernet, the settings *should* be the same for this (note: I have ethernet). Select the properties for your INTERNET connection. Click on the advanced tab. In the Internet Connection Sharing fields, check both boxes. The first will want you to select your BT local area connection (which we dealt with above). This should route all BT internet traffic to this internet connection.
-----------------

That should be it. From your Clie, go to preference and network and hit connect. Let me know if it doesn't work. It took me nearly all day of fidgetting to figure it out.

rg1,

Unfortunately I don't have Bluetooth on my PC. I was hoping I could connect to the net through my phone (6310i) which has bluetooth, not my PC.

Do you have any furher suggestions??

Oh... I'm sorry. I miss understood. Do you have a GPRS setting for your provider (who's your provider) for "dialup" (not really dialup, since it's over GPRS)? On my t39 (ericsson), I have two data accounts. One for WAP and one for "ISP". I have Cingular in the Carolinas, and the two settings are different (WAP vs ISP). So, if you already have the equivalent ISP settings setup for your cell provider, you'll be well on your way.

On my t39, the ISP setup is the second GPRS connection. Accordingly, when I want to connect I dial "*99***2#" (with no quotes). The *99*** is tells the phone to use a GPRS account. And the 2# is for the second GPRS account (ISP for me). Cingular (at least in my area) requires a username and password (which are common for all cingular users).

I haven't done what you want to do with my Clie (only w/ my laptop... just got the clie yesterday). But, here's how I'd imagine it would go (on the clie)...

- Setup a Connection (under preferences) to a modem. Select "Connect to: Modem", "Via: Bluetooth". The other settings *shouldn't* matter.
- Setup a network (under preferences). Create a new network under the pull down menu. Enter the username/password (if required, yes in my case). Under connection, select the connection you created in the previous step. The other settings *should* be correct. Under the phone, enter "Phone: *99***2#" ('2' in my case).

Does this make sense? Which step are you having trouble with?

rg1/wilsonch_98,

I have managed to solve the problem (Yipeee).

At first I thought it might be the settings that I had entered (user name etc). So I joined a number of local WAP ISP and entered that information. Again this didn't work. Just by chance I accidently removed all the Log in script data contained within the network settings. By doing this, it allowed me to sign into the particular WAP ISP that I had entered.

Now I had a connection but, nothing was loading on the screen. So I had a chat with a colleague from work and they suggested to re-enter my home ISP settings as the WAP ISP settings would only work on WAP phones. When I returned home I tried this and IT WORKED. I can now surf the net through my handheld with my BT nokia phone.

So it seemed to be a problem with the log in script all along.

Big THANKS for all your effort and help.

Well I cannot do internet surfing with my nokia 6310i and I have been told that I need to update the firmware on the 6310i to 4.31 or higher (its 4.07).

So you must have higher firmware? (press *#0000# and please let me know)

Thanks

How close do you need to be to your bluetooth access to establish/maintain a connection? I know it's intended for short range, but can I sit on the couch 15 feet away?

Yes, I've successfully used my TG-50 to my laptop at that range.

You want to connect your TG50 to the internet over your USB cradle/cable that is connected to your computer with an existing internet connection? Check out http://www.softick.com/ppp/

I've set up my TG50 and my notebook for internet sharing using the instructions you gave, but when I tap "Connect", the TG50 goes through "Initializing", then "Signing On", but then fails with a PPP timeout. The two are paired, and I'm able to hotsync just fine via bluetooth. Any ideas?
