In case anybody wants to help us with Beta testing...
The main new feature is the (optional) Firefox-style Tab-interface, i.e. you can have multiple live views at a time.
Other features include:
- optional touch scrolling (I know - kind of a toy)
- FTP improvements
- Centro-adjustments
Full change log (http://www.resco.net/palm/explorer/history.asp)
Download Explorer v4.10 (http://resco.net/palm/explorer/downloads/RescoExplorer_4_10_BETA.prc)
Any feedback is appreciated.

I'll bite :) - downloaded and on deck.
There's a feature I frequently wish RE had but I can't remember now. I'm going to play in it for a while and reply here when I rediscover it. After that I'll hit the beta.

When the Tabs were switched off, Explorer crashed on exit. (Bug in reference counting.)
Sorry, please use this link (http://resco.net/palm/explorer/downloads/RescoExplorer_4_10_1_BETA.prc) for the correct version:

Wow, the tabs are a great addition!
The touch scroll is great, too, since I sometimes struggle to slide the very slim scroll bar. I think the drawback is that you can no longer drag files around folders (but not necessarily a loss, and with tabs files are managed better in my opinion).
I notice however that touch scrolling does not work on the folder tree portion, for both horizontal and vertical layouts.

Let's see how the people accept it. So far it is implemented in the list only.
Drag can be done, but it is a bit tricky. We'll try to improve it.

I see. Let me be the first one to say it's a great feature! Although I think a lot of people would find it unnecessary, I like it since it gives RE a more sans-stylus interface.
Great work on RE!

great update! I love the tabs. One probelm i have is that the icon view is too small with my font size. I have a fon't size for the list view, but want another one for icon view.
Also, with those tabs, how about incorperating blazer into it ;)

Could it be possible to have diferent fonts for icon view and lisrt vieew like if you use RE as launcher and you use tiny font for icons they are the same for all now and I woul prefer bigger for other stuff like card or contol panel.
Other thing to use RE as launcher could it be possible to have more than 4 columns for icons?
You are right, the font setup is not optimal. I did a few experiments and see that even 320x320 screen could accomodate 6x7 icons with the smallest font. We'll do some improvements here.

The tabs are a great addition!
I would like to see two possible enhancements to the tabs:
[1] Ability to lock tabs - I imagine being able to lock a tab at a user selected base directory (ex. Applications) which would allow forward nav to sub levels, but navigating back would stop at the base directory. This tab would always stay open unless unlocked and closed. This might fit as a long tap pop-up option on an open tab.
[2] Ability to open new directories/folders in a new tab - I see this as a long tap pop-up option on a directory/folder that would open the selected directory in a new tab.
The finger scrolling is nice, but in icon view (Applications) I get a lot of false selections.
One other enhancement I would like is the ability to add apps to the favs list (ex. Prefs). I usually have it hidden in my launcher and open it via RE when needed. Having it as a fav would be nice.
Thanks for your excellnet suite and ongoing development! RE is unmatched!

Nice update Jan.
I like the tabs feature - it's quite handy!
It would be nice if dragging a file/folder to another tab could activate that tab so we could drop the files in a sub-directory in the target tab.
It's great that you already offer the option of dragging a file/folder to the toolbar to act upon it, but I usually have the Toolbar down for maximum screen real estate. Do you think you could modify behavior so if an object is dragged to the bottom of the display (with the Toolbar down/deactivated) the Toolbar would pop up so we could drop on it?
I also remembered what I have wanted to ask for earlier. It's more of a cosmetic change and you may have it configured as you do for a reason, but I'll ask for the heck of it. When Copying a file using the context menu, the "Copy To..." screen pops up and the "Favorites" link is under/within the "Device" header. When I see this, my (silly old brain) wants to see "Favorites" at the same level as "Device" and "Network", not as a sub-item of "Device. No offense taken if you think my train of thought is mixed up , just tell me it's just how you want it.
Ability to open new directories/folders in a new tab - I see this as a long tap pop-up option on a directory/folder that would open the selected directory in a new tab.Seconded. That's one of the requests I came here to type in just now - and exactly how I would like to see it behave.
Again, thanks for the new version. http://www.1src.com/forums/images/icons/icon14.gif

I second scottl's request, all of them!
Oh, I know this is probably a pie in the sky dream, but sure would be nice if it could support gzip, rar and maybe a few other compression methods :) And while you were at it, you could add a "Get Beer" button, so that by simply pressing a button, the device would go to my fridge, grab me a beer, and bring it back to me.

Not that it could not be done - I am rather hesitating to introduce things that would have large impact on the rendering speed and on the application size. Plus I am not sure if this feature would have any impact on the Explorer popularity.

[1] Ability to lock tabs
It works this way - you just need to rename the tab.
[2] Ability to open new directories/folders in a new tab - I see this as a long tap pop-up option on a directory/folder that would open the selected directory in a new tab.
Rather complex implementation, I don't know...

Oh, I know this is probably a pie in the sky dream, but sure would be nice if it could support gzip, rar and maybe a few other compression methods :)
gzip is manageable, but would probably not pay off.
rar is a) difficult, b) I am not even sure that it can be done on Palm OS:
Rar v1 can be done (we even tested the implementation), but covers a small fraction of rar archives available on the web.
Rar v2 is extremaly memory-demanding, probably more than the Palm OS platform allows.
And while you were at it, you could add a "Get Beer" button, so that by simply pressing a button, the device would go to my fridge, grab me a beer, and bring it back to me. :)

Yes, it is designed this way.
Hi janos,
1, do you add shortcut for "Install to RAM"? for example "R" ("I" is for "Info").
2, and save/unsave prefs can be sorted by name, size, ... can you add a new sort way, by index?
3, about rescobackup+, now it can compare save prefs difference, do you add the comparison of unsave prefs difference?
Thanks

I havent tested this beta yet but have a question about a slight issue with the pre beta 4.01.
When the option to dim screen on long transfers is checked it turns on the keyboard lights if they were on.
I use Power hero to turn them off and save battery power and of course the dimming the screen option in explorer save some juice also but after the transfer is done it turns on the keyguard lights. Consequently I have to toggle they keyboard lights twice to get them to turn off again.
I have used power hereo, keylights da and keyshades hack and resco has this effect in all.
Would that be an easy fix?

So n e time the backlight brightness changes, the keyboard lights will adjust to them. Since the phone is made to have the keyboard lights on at ALL times (another stoopid downgrade from the 600, IMNSVHBPO), it just assumes that since they were already on, all it's really doing is changing the brightness.

I'd love the option to skin the top and bottom bars. I see no need to add backgrounds to the main windows, as this could easily interfere with the text. Hope that you consider it for the future.

The news:
Launcher: Text font customizable. (Select Font dialog)
Launcher: Small icons mode (General Options) fits more icons on the screen.
In the extreme case (small icons + smallest font) you can get 42 apps onto one Treo screen
Favorites allow for applications shortcuts.
Folder context menu has the option New Tab (Opens the folder in a new Tab)
Receiving files into tabbed interface works correctly
Copy To dialog lists Favorites as the top-level node

Hi,
Please provide more information:
- type of network (Windows Shares, FTP, Bluetooth)
- type of server
- device language (and encoding), do you use Piloc, or similar?
The general text problem is that PalmOS devices do not use unicode (neither UTF16 (windows) nor UTF8).
Instead text uses a specific encoding (e.g. western, central european etc.). This depends on the actual device language, and can be changed using Piloc or similar software.
While windows networking and Bluetooth FTP do use unicode, we are translating the file names from devices native encoding to unicode and vice versa.
The actual problem is that this translation breaks down for some chars that cannot be represented in the device native encoding.
Btw. there is no support for unicode in normal ftp.
With best regards,
Miro

I do not remember the details as it was approx. 2 years ago when we investigated rar. Rar has basically 2 major versions, whereby rar v2 achieves better results at the cost of huge memory consumption. (Read huge with respect to the PDA memory - PC's handle it with ease, of course.)
We implemented rar v1 and then found that among randomly selected rar downloads a vast majority use rar v2.
Public rar v2 algorithm cannot run on most Palm OS PDA's. I know there is MobileRar for Palm OS, but when we tested it (a few months ago), it also could not handle rar v2. Such implementation is meaningless in my opinion.

Excuse me if this has been covered or if I am missing something obvious. I keep looking for the tabs mentioned here and can't find anything in explorer that has tabs. I see categories which are nice, but nothing resembling the tabs in say LauncherX or Zlauncher.
I've used LX as my launcher since it came out, but would be open to trying RE as my launcher if it actually had tabs which could have both card items and RAM items at the same time. Also I get 11 tabs across on my LX setup in portrait view.

You enable the Tabs in the General Options.
I think the way Tabs function in RE is different from the way tabs function in LX or ZL.
In RE you use tabs so you can have, so to speak, multiple folders open.

Additions all work great! I have another request for you to ponder. There are times when I'm in RE and I want to create a new backup set for use in Resco Backup.
The Backup function in RE defaults to ALL files selected. Could it start with selected files if files were selected when the backup function was called?
Could any backups created in RE be added to the RscBackup Project list? Then they could be further enhanced for later use.
I found that RE backups go to Card/PALM/BackupE. That's a different directory than RscBackup uses. If one of these two apps could point to an alternate directory for the repository, could they read each others backups?
Perhaps your goal is/was backup isolation... It does make it easy to have quick task related backups when in RE and system/automated tasks in RscBackup.
Sorry, this is getting long due to my thinking out loud. :o I'll stopfornow.

Absolutely no change. The shift arrow is visible everywhere apart from the launcher views. (As it always used to be.) If you see something else, then it must be our bug. I just wonder that nobody noticed it so far.

Interesting idea, but I am not even sure that it would work correctly. The directory location is not the only obstacle. RB uses different clustering, has project file, log etc. And the differences may grow up in the future.

You must have installed wrong file. The About box says v4.10.2, same as the Palm launcher.
How did you install the file? When you for example use Explorer itself to copy Explorer update from network, card etc., then a strange thing happens:
Old Explorer DB is renamed to something like RExpnnn and the new Explorer is installed to RAM. What should follow is the deletion of the renamed DB, but this fails. (Because this DB is running.) The result is 2 Explorer copies in RAM and the launcher will sooner or later show both of them. To solve this problem you must launch the correct one and delete RExp* DB manually.
I don't know if this happened...

Is there a way for explorer to take presidense when open insted of the default Palm OS interupting?
ie receiving photos videos and it automaticly opening up in pics and videos?
or at the very least keep the Palm os from telling you this file type is not supported and having to ok a window before you can choose where to put the file?

The most important strings:

#define _T_SelectApp "Select an Application"
#define _F_AppNotFound "Application %s not found"

Less important stuff. (It can remain English in the worst case.)

Here is what we tried so far:

"Pestaña personalizada etiqueta:"
#define _T_NewTab "Nueva pestaña"

If no then you should install Piloc or some similar software that allows you to do so.
(Some Palm devices support Spanish and other European languages but only after a hard reset. But I don't know about treos/centros in US etc.)
With a german device I have no problems with Samba serving files with "ßüöä" chars etc.
With FTP there is no unicode support in Explorer, so you have to
a) make sure you only use ASCII
b) make sure that both your Palm Device and your ftp server use the same encoding.

I love the Tabs :) but to be honest, I don't think I am using them for the reason you meant and in my efforts to test the Tab feature I haven't found their true value.
I guess I'm just not a power user ;)
Anyway, for me they are a very convenient way to have my RE Favorites onscreen at all times and so I request the following:
• User designated, amount of Rows of Tabs, one is not enough.
• User designated, amount of Tabs per Row, 3 > 4 is best to have a name with meaning.
• Ability to put the Tabs on the bottom of the screen for easy selection with my thumbnail. Maybe it's just me but I use my thumbnail for most onscreen tapping even website page# selection in Blazer.
I know I am basically asking for ZLauncher type Tabs but it would be handy :)
Finger Scrolling is an ok idea but I think it depends a lot on your ScreenProtector sensitivity, I was going to report it didn't work until I found pushing really hard worked (my Stylus input works fine)
Again, I use my thumbnail to drag the ScrollBar so I will pass on FingerScroll.
Have you checked out the PsMemo (jove21.com/palm/palmware/psmemo/?ex-lang=en) wide ScrollBar
Menu > Options > Preferences > Misc > Enable Finger Operation
Installing RE updates using MyInstall (pruss.mobi/dl) by Alex Pruss works perfectly (of course ;) )

AFAIK Mobihand should support Paypal, but that's all I know. Handango does not.

It installs the application in the MyInstall directory automatically when the SD card is inserted. I believe it is included in the same archive as MyInstall.

Any way to thicken the scroll bars would certainly be a big "up" to the interface of any app.
Making it a "global" setting would be incredible.

Please try this link. (http://resco.net/palm/explorer/downloads/RescoExplorer_4_10_3_BETA.prc)
It is stil BETA, but I consider it ready for the final release.
Concerning the scrollbars we implementred a compromise: The sensitive area is doubled without changing the scrollbar appearance.
'New Tab' context menu option is allowed also for root folders.
Filter works on the per-Tab basis - similarly to the multiselection.
Plus some less important changes.

Are you able to input "ñ" on your device?
If no then you should install Piloc or some similar software that allows you to do so.
(Some Palm devices support Spanish and other European languages but only after a hard reset. But I don't know about treos/centros in US etc.)
With a german device I have no problems with Samba serving files with "ßüöä" chars etc.
With FTP there is no unicode support in Explorer, so you have to
a) make sure you only use ASCII
b) make sure that both your Palm Device and your ftp server use the same encoding.
With best regards,
Miro
SAMBA solved but not with FTP. I think the problem is the FTP server.

It seems to me that there is a problem with the Explorer installed in the TX RAM and the Explorer installed in the TX Card.
I'll explain more in detail:
After updated the RAM version to the latest v4.10.3 I realized that the Explorer residing in Card (PALM\Launcher folder) were the older v4.01.3 or something so.
Therefore, using the same Explorer I copied the RAM version to the Card overwiriting the Card v4.01 with the newer v4.10 from RAM.
After that and when I make Tap on the Icon of the Card version in order to test the copied application, this message overcomes:
A newer version of this application already exists on the device. Do you want to replace it?
But sure (I made the test: the older Card version overwrote the newer RAM version!) the RAM version is NEWER than the Card version. Using the same Explorer capabilities (Info), I found this information:
RAM VERSION v4.10.3 Size 504k
CARD VERSION v41003 Size 504k (With NO dots!)
Is there a conflict or confusion for this reason and possibly it causes the wrong information?
I'll appreciate if somebody can make the same test.

I keep a copy of RE in Card/Launcher as well.
After updating the RAM version using MyInstall (pruss.mobi/dl) I use the standard Palm 'Copy to Card'
Launcher > Menu > Copy
and it updates the card version ok.
I don't think it's a good idea to copy RE with RE, it sounds very confusing to me and maybe it's confusing to RE as well :)

Wozofoz: Thank you for the note.
The issue seems replicable IF you have the RE v4.01 in Card (\PALM\Launcher) AND the RE v4.10.3 in RAM.
At least those were the working conditions when I tried to invoke the version residing in the Card (v4.01) in order to verify its version...
My goal was to have the same version in RAM and Card. In order to verify which version I had in Card I invoked the RE from its Icon in Card using the Palm OS Launcher. I'm not sure if you had an older RE version previously installed in your Card and if you tried to run that older version from Card while a newer version was in RAM.

A newer version of this application already exists on the device. Do you want to replace it?
I read this as saying
"Are you sure you want to replace the new version that is on the Device with the old version that is on the Card"
But sure (I made the test: the older Card version overwrote the newer RAM version!)
and so when you selected Yes, it did overwrite the new Device version with the old Card version.
Whenever you use RE to launch an app from the card (by Tapping) it copies that app to RAM (the Device) and then deletes it when you exit the app.
If there is already a copy of the app in RAM then you will always get the above message.
"A newer version of this application already exists on the device. Do you want to replace it?"
Or if both copies are the same you will get a message something like
"A version of this application already exists on the device. Do you want to use it"
To check the version# of RE on the card, select (hi-light) RE in Card/Palm/Launcher and Tap the i 'Info' button on the bottom ToolBar, this will give you the version#
Personally, when I want to check the version# of RE on the card, I always use the standard Palm info
Launcher > Menu > Info > Card
I hope I am correctly understanding what you are saying :)

Sorry, I just realised you used the Palm Launcher to launch RE from the card but I don't think it makes any difference to the end result.
Palm Launcher will still want to copy RE to the Device and so you will still get the new version being overwritten by the old version.

It is a problem. Launched app is opened and as such cannot be overwritten by any means.
Here is what happens when you install Explorer.prc into the RAM from within Explorer itself.
1. Explorer renames RescoExplorer database to some RExpxxx. (Rename can be done. Note that the internal DB name that is written in the DB header remains as before - Explorer.)
2. RescoExplorer is copied into the RAM.
3. The trial to delete RExpxxx fails.
The result:
You have 2 Explorers in the RAM and sooner or later the launcher will show 2 Explorer icons.
The outcome:
You have to start the correct Explorer (no big deal - in the worst case the 2nd trial will do it) and delete the file RExpxxx. ('xxx' is some number.)
Second remark
Launcher keeps the items such as the app icon and the DB version in its cache. Bypassing launcher when installing an app update to the card may lead to the situation that the launcher remembers the old version. This will be sooner or later auto-corrected, but meanwhile you can get false version warnings. (That the RAM version is newer, although it is not.)

Nothing like this here - for several devices, TX including.
Does the copy itself work?
Does it happen also for large files?
Do you have any hacks or similar that could eventually generate extra events? (Your question suggests that.)
I looked into the sources and if unexpected events come, the drawing process might be interrupted.
If you have a repeatable case, then we could solve it offline by sending a modified version. If this is the case, contact me please at palm@resco-net.com.

1. I removed a bunch, disabled a bunch of apps, tried again. Nothing different. My Palm crashed and reset after trying a new app. Anyhow, afterwards, I tried copying a file to ram, and the progress bar showed. Tried to copy a file via FTP, and no progress bar, even though the transfer took about 3 seconds.

This does not mean much. Progress decides by the amount of copied data, which is not an optimal strategy for FTP. It could be that FTP copied a few Bytes and the progress decided that it is not worth of drawing anything and then the rest went in one go.
janos
09-26-2008, 09:51 AM
Copying into RAM using a slow channel (that is so slow that lets the event queue running - such as FTP; you see the event queue running by the flashing network icon) has one specific:
There can be a conflict between the resource ID's of the Explorer and the copied DB. This is kind of a design flaw of the Palm OS, when the resources are searched in the complete list of the opened databases.
The conflict happens when the copied DB uses the same ID's as used in the progress drawing by the Explorer. A rather exceptional case, but happens.
Copy to the card has no problems - not even theretically.
Supertrucker
09-26-2008, 04:07 PM
Well you are right on all counts. The files transferred via FTP were under 10k max, just updated PHP scripts (text files), and the flashing network icon was always present as data was sent/received. I just thought that the blue progress bar would be shown on all counts, but that's okay, happy to see that there are no bugs then!
Thanks for the quick response,
