Hi everybodu,
I just bought a 512 Mb MS PRO, and my device tells me I have only 468 Mb available on it...instead of the 512 Mb I paid for ;-)
I formatted the card several times, installes the MS Pro patch, but no way to gain even 1 bit :-/
Somebody has an idea ?
Thanks in advance :-)
That is the case with any MS as some of the space is taken up by the file allocation table. Even computer hard drives do that. It is NORMAL. Generally, the larger the drive, the more space required to create the file allocation table. The file allocation table is neccessary for the OS to keep track of where all the files are stored.

Also, space is usually exagerated by defining the capacity in decimal rather than binary (powers of 2).
Binary 1MB: 1024 x 1024 = 1048576
Decimal 1MB: 1000 x 1000 = 1000000
Binary is the correct way to measure space for computers. Using decimal is false and decieving. But most manufacturers of computer storage do this now.

Hi, thanks for your answer :-)
I know the allocation table has to be on the drive, but 44 MB on 512 seems to be a HUGE file allocation table...don't you think so ?
Is there any owner of a 512 Mb around here ? Somebody who could confirm 468 Mb is really the maximum available room on an 512 MS PRO ?
Thanks :-)

Just got my MSPRO 512MB and experienced the same thing. I'll ignore the size of the FAT just to bask in the improved speed and space vs the old stick.

I think Sony states that only 468Mb is available on a 512 MB card either on the back of the box or inside some piece of paper inside the box. Remember reading it somewhere when i got my card. True, it does suck that i don't have the full 512 but i don't know whether it's different for the rest of the flash cards. Still, I'll agree with judson on the performance and space that is available on the new stick.

512 * 1,000,000 / (1024 * 1024) = 488.3
The other 20mb prob went to FAT and other copyrighting functions crap for MagicGate.

Hhmmm...
Thanks to you all, it does make sense...
Do some of you think that formatting the card in a different way could increase the room ? Would there really have some loss of performance in this case ?

I've tried fatting my MSPro 256mb to FAT32 to reduce slack space (a lot of them are lost to very small files typically found in Palm databases), but it seems like the Clie cannot read FAT32. So too bad, back to FAT... :(
Back to your question, I doubt there's any particular formatting you can do to increase the amount of space lost.

And what about formatting in FAT with a smaller cluster size ?
Anyone tried ?

That's for sure. For every space of memory there's got to be a FAT (File Allocation Table),for without this the memory cannot be stored.Think of it as a cage without walls, the content can just go missing

Hi!
I have just bought the new clié modell (PEG-TG50), and I also bought a MS Pro Card (512MB) with it.
My problem is, that I don't have the software upgrade, witch is requied for.
I've already tried to download that from 2 servers (ftp.clie-link.com ; ftp.ita.sel.sony.com), but unsuccesfully.
Could u get me please a working url, or send it to my e-mail adress, if you have it.
THX!
