So I was talking to my boss who just got back from CES. He tells me that Sony was getting hammered on because the NX series is actually 11 MB after swap and reserved space is taken from the resources. He also tells me that there was talk about European NX series having CF drivers. I know the Japanese version has some support for CF modems not made by Sony. Can anyone verify the 11MB/CF?

I have European model 1. The memory is the same set up as American 16m but 11m left for use. 2. CF do not know, no CF card.

I have notice that when installing a program the install tool change destination has listed internal, memory stick and CF card is this the same with american version.

The North American version has 2 options...handheld or memorystick. No CF option. Is this the break we've been waiting for??!!

actually the north american version has three option also, the third is "CompactFlash Card", it has been there the whole time, so nothing has changed.

It's true that some modems will work with the right driver. One fellow named pelaca had converted the CF driver to work with the english version of some modems. The file called CF Utility, is apparently lost momentarily because of the corrupted ClieSource database. I hadn't heard anything about CF drivers in a UK version. Yes, Sony should get hammered on over the 11mb free memory.

That 16mb thing really chaps me, I called and asked about it and they brushed me off kind of, I mentioned that is was false advertising,...to no avail. Wish we could get the flash freed up so we can use that too.

I'm pretty sure this can be "solved" by reducing the data heap size. This would indeed free some RAM, but then I expect some memory-hungry programs like AudioPlayer, pictures and movies recorder, maybe NetFront, etc... would stop working due to the limited data heap space available.

Would people still be interested by the NX70V in that case?

Um, it's not really false advertising. There is 16MB of RAM inside the unit. They never say that you can use all 16MB for storage and if you look at the website, I think it does state that only 11MB is avalible for use. It's just like a PC, you have so much hard drive and RAM, but much of it is already used up when you first turn the PC on.

I think the NX should be supplied with a Memory Stick (in the box) because really you need one (MP3, photo, voice recording,...).
It should be like it is with the digital cameras, even a 32 or 64 Mo will be ok for most of the users.

Who can use the NX without a memory stick?
There was a pool about that... no?

you guys ever read hitchhikers guide to the galaxy? The plans to tear down the house were in the basement that had no stairs or light, filed in the bottom of a file cabinet with a tiger on top... if you have to hunt for something that says you can only use 11meg, I'd say thier advertising is very misleading, the box says 16 megs ram, no one should have to go on a hunt to verify this. Don't get me wrong, that is the first thing I checked on the palm and I still got one, I love it, and yes I would still buy one if I could shut the other stuff off to free the memory, as long as I could turn it back on, because we all know how much we love to use NetFront.

The point I was trying to make was that there is in fact 16MB of RAM. If you were to look and see if all of it was usable as storage, you would find that it isn't the case. Every Palm unit has some of the RAM dedicated to the heap. It's just that now the heap is larger than before and is becoming of noticable size. It was never advertised how much RAM is used for the heap, and it still isn't.

True, I thought that also, m515 says that it has 16, but has somewhere around 15, you'd think though that a 5 meg drop would be something that they would warn a person about, or maybe put 24 megs in there to give the extra needed for the palm, it was, this is how I feel about it anyway, poor judgement. Cannon did the same thing, they advertised 48bit for their scanner...printed in big red lettering on the front of the box, I called them about it and they told me it was all internal in the scanner, you could only get 24 bit to the computer...guess I have an issue with stuff like that though. Guess they figure that when you get the stuff home and fall in love with it you wouldn't take it back for such piddly little reasons....and they are right.

The file on the previous page is probably the original Japanese version of the CF utility. Check this earlier post:
http://www.cliesource.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=83&highlight=modem
And install the english version called cfutilityen.zip
The utility seems to run fine on my NX although I am still waiting for my modem to be delivered before I can test it fully.

The program called power run works pretty good for moving programs off to the memory stick. There is a slight lag time for large programs/databases to load and if you need to synch, you need to move the program back to onboard for the synch, and then move it back up when you're done. Overall, I am quite pleased with how the program works. I have about 6.5 meg available to run. Even ClieMail and the CFUtil work up high.

whole sentences written in pure Caps Lock are called shouting all throughout the internet, you dont have to change the fontsize for that (would be really hard on irc ;) ).
