What's a good screen capture util for a tx?

Not likin ScreenShot5 (which I use) or alex's ScreenDumpDA? There's Snap, that paint app (cant remember its name off hand right now), but what I really want to kno is if there's one that can export to lossless jpg format (the rest generally do bmp - ScreenShot5 does do jpg too, but not lossless). All should work fine on the TX tho.

There is no such thing as lossless jpeg. Jpeg was designed from the ground up to be lossy, and will only decrease in efficiency the higher you set the image quality. Only Bitmap and PNG are completely lossless formats. I use Snap btw, which works very well and saves bitmaps into memory card: http://mytreo.net/downloads/snap,231.html

There is also the straight to JPEG version of the Alex Pruss ScreenDumpDA @

All the best, woz of oz

See the link in my sig for an article I wrote on Tamspalm comparing screen capture apps. Probably the best freebie is HRCapt, which I now use quite a bit, and the best shareware is Screenshot.

I agree with Tom on both counts. Both of those capture the entire screen. Several of the alternatives omit the DIA.

Okay, I've played with both of them now, and have reservations about both, HRCapt and ScreenShot5. My reservations are that both seem to make my TX crash, although I'm thinking that probably has something to do with the tons of crap I have on it (I love demos!).

May be time for another hard reset! Yay, doing so is so much fun... Maybe this time I'll actually create a reliable backup set without all my garbage on it.

I think I'll probably stick with HrCapt, as I can use it with DBLP/Apt to capture the entire screen, without interfering with other button capturing apps, ScreenShot5 doesn't leave a lot of room here.

Thanks for the help!

One thing that can cause crashes in ScreenShot5 is often a corrupted DB, which can be manually deleted to fix usually. I use it with the Option+Space setting, as I have no other use at all for that key combo.

As far as "no such thing as lossless jpeg", ok... "near" lossless? AFAIK the Jpeg convention still does officially recognize a lossless Jpeg algorithm; if you're jus sayin it's not really lossless, then ok I guess. Either way, I'd like to have a "less lossy" Jpeg screen capturer if there is one.

Thanks for the link to the Jpeg version of ScreenDumpDA, woz! (I owe you +1 kudos if you come to mtdn). Outside of changing the code, n e body know how to have the BMP and Jpeg versions both installed and both accessible at the same time? Thanks; holla

Sorry I probably should have been more explicit. HRCaptDA works fine on the TX, but HRCaptDM - the management tool part of the app - invariably crashes the TX. If you just use the DA you should be fine, but if you attempt to look at the screen captures with the DM app you will at best get one look then it will crash.

HRCaptDA has no problems capturing the screen in APT and similar apps because it is a DA - use any DA launcher. I use Alex Pruss' MetaDA to launch all my DAs.

For anyone whose interest in HRCaptDA has been aroused by this discussion, I once wrote about my experiences in using it, hoping it might be helpful to others. That discussion is here (http://forum.brighthand.com/showthread.php?t=232455). There is a similar discussion posted in the Freeware section here at 1src - here (http://www.1src.com/freeware/fileinfo.php?id=1595).

Thanks Ferd and CD :) After playing with it for a little while, the DA for HRCapt does seem to be working okay, no crashes since I first started playing with it. Like I said, there is a lot of junk on my TX!

As for the viewer, kind of pointless anyhow, I just use the RE viewer or the builtin Media viewer if I have to, so no biggy.
