View Full Version : NX70 Tip: NetFront install at anytime!!
Hy,
you never needed Netfront but now, when you have finally installed all your apps and set up your personal environment, you want to do it??
No prob. Don't care about how many space is needed to install Netfront there is a far more comfortable way.
You need:
A MemoryStick
A Backup(current)
Some Time
First of all make a backup via MSBackup. Then look for your Clie-Folder on the Desktop. In your Programms/Sony Handheld/ "Your User name". Rename it to an appropriate name.
Now make a hard reset. Make a sync. It asks you to make a new user. Take the old user name. After the first hotsync. Install Netfront. Now just recover your backup. Be sure to have at least the reqiured 3MB free.
Now rename the old folder back to its former name(your user name).
That's it. Hooray!

Do I need 3MB available? Or can I install it with 2MB -programs size- as well?

Why not just install NetFront first, before restoring everything else. After that I recommend moving it to the memory stick via PowerRun. That way future hard resets won't require re-installing NetFront, just use the update shortcuts in PowerRun.
You can't install NetFront porperly when you don't have enough space, can you?
Because of the fact you renamed the old hotsync folder, it won't restore anything. So you only install netfront. Then you recover your old backup. MSBackup won't delete old files so it recovers the old data over the old. In that way you could just recover 12MB and Netfront would work fine, though. If you make then a Backup it will cover NetFront as well.
I haven't ever used PowerRun.

Right, but what's the difference if you install it first before you HotSync. Just copy it from the memory stick like the other updates and drivers that aren't restored by the backup. I have done it many times and I find the extra steps unnecessary, that's all. For some of us, PowerRun is an absolute must to conserve what little precious RAM we have left. NetFront can consume 2 to 3 megabytes or better alone, depending on the cache. PowerRun can move all that to the memory stick very neatly :). In the likely event of a hard reset, there is no need to reinstall NetFront or rename backup folders. I think it's a whole lot simpler and easier to do. I was only trying to point out that there are alternative ways. I picked up some of these tips from others, so I can't claim originality.
I never restore from the desktop, only from backups. I keep two sticks with rolling backups, plus copy them to my hard drive. Yes, initially it's a bit of extra work, but it has saved my bacon a couple of times when I had to nuke everything. It's all too easy to back up issues and not know it until later. On my one memory stick I keep copies of all the install files of the CF driver, MS Pro driver, Jack Enable, system update patch, and the WL100 driver. The reason is some of it won't install from the backups or HotSync. Anymore a restore needs a game plan if the Clie has a lot of stuff on it and updates added. BTW, with 100+ apps, I still have 9.0MB of free RAM so I can run large documents with Picsel Viewer :).

What is the use of doing this to install NetFront ? Does this mean it can run on Memory Stick after doing the procedures described above ?
