View Full Version : Installing software on the device without a full hotsync

Hello all,
When you have a chocka block Clie filled to the rafters with software, a hotsync sometimes can take longer than expected.
When you are trying out a new piece of software it can take forever for the hotsync to completely finish. I eventually got frustrated with this function and i started to watch the hotsync and see what it was doing.
When i saw the dialog box "installing new XXXX software" i would wait till that part of the hotsync would finish before i cancelled the hotsync funtion. That way it would only do the installation of that particular file.
This is one solution. I was wondering if anyone else knows of another.
I mean rather than having to do it this way, i wonder if there was a purposely designed program that ony installs software on the Clie/Palm etc....

I use Pilot Install (http://www.palmgear.com/software/showsoftware.cfm?prodID=7146).
Installing PalmOS programs and databases takes too long? You don't want to HotSync the whole handheld?
Simply Install - Pilot Install speeds up the installation of Palm programs, databases, pictures and other data by bypassing HotSync.
Simply Install - Pilot Install installs file types like PRC, PDB, PQA, ZIP, PIA, MIDI, TXT, BMP, JPG (JPEG)

MSImport of course, and even though it won't help a stock NX user, sending a file via bluetooth is my personal favorite. I suspect this could be done via IrDA as well.

Yeap! just use MSImport and save the files to your MS in the Palm\Launcher folder. This way they are not taking up valuable space on internal memory.

Just double click the files to load them into PInstall and press HotSync. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but with MS Import I have to start it on my Clie, then tell the desktop how I want to handle it (i.e., open Explorer), then have to copy the files over. T hen have to disconnect. It's a PITA.

tell you what, i have to agree with the above post.
ive just tried doing the ms-import stuff and comparing it to pilot install.
pilot install wins hands down. anyway ms-import will only work if you have a ms stick. you cant install direct to the palm with this method.

I have used Pinstall for a while now and love it!
There should a new version out very shortly, one came out then seems to have been pulled for some reason.
Here is another solution:)
Ultrasoft NotSync
No more waiting for long HotSyncŪ operations

The obvious and free answer is to go into the HotSynch desktop icon and change the custom settings in what to do with each file type. You can enable only the install. Your previous settings will be active (default) the next time you run the HotSynch.

Heck, the *real* answer's even easier: Use Linux and pilot-link. I've been doing that for years... :-)
