View Full Version : Treo 680 auto-complete in SMS app

Hi all,

I recently bought a Treo 680 and I have noticed that there is some kind of "auto complete" when entering SMS messages in the Messaging application. For example, when I enter wel it auto-completes to we'll.

I have been looking for some setting where this can be switched off, but was unable to find it. Anybody any idea?

Many thanks in advance!

I think it's built in the keyboard driver itself because it also works in every other application. At least, if it's the same autocorrection as the one in the Italian version.
More than disabling it, it would be great to be able to customise it.

Sorry for the late reply. You're right, it's in every input field. I pinpointed it down to HsExtensions2.0_enUS.prc (in my case), but since that file resides in ROM it will not be possible to edit it... sniff.

Yes it is customizable. Download this patched file and and copy it to internal memory: HsExtensions2.0_enUS-patched.zip (http://killinghawk.wz.cz/HsExtensions2.0_enUS-patched.zip)

After reset no automatic corrections will be present.

I have an [unreleased] little app that lets one customize this auto-correction list on the fly (and without needing a copy of that file in RAM)

killinghawk: Thanks a lot, it works, no more annoying auto-corrections!
dmitrigr: It would be great if you could release that little application...

There's an old thread (somewhat recently revitalized) discussing this very thing at mtdn

http://mytreo.net/forum/index.php/topic,12279.0.html

(along with a few other threads...)

Several patches are also found in the Downloads Section (http://mytreo.net/downloads) there.

(Tho I too agree that many would find such a tool to be quite useful, mr G.)

I'll release it later today maybe

dmitry you're the man :) Palm should pay you (but something tells me they won't:-))

Has it been published elsewhere?

search PowerDict on PalmPowerups.com downloads

it's there with source code. only tested on treo 680 cingular. YMMV, other devices might need different offsets. please report how it goes for you.

this approach is better than the one proposed above (keep a copy of _enUS" file in RAM because 1. it requires no additional ram, and 2. The _enUS file can have at most 128 replacements, whereas using this method up to 65536 replacements can be defined.

If it is in Ram and in uncache list app will auto-reenable the saved list at reset.

enjoy

works for anyone but me?

Thanks dmitry for making this available. I tried it on my unlocked 680 and it works just fine!

I've found it to be useful for doing longer replacements like replacing "bc" with "because" , "ty" with "thank you" and "iam" to "In a Meeting" makes it much faster to type messages

It's just great!! I have "accessorized" it so I can edit the replacements without even quitting Memos or Docs2go or whatever app I'm in. Thanks once again!

I tried this on my 650 and it just crashed it :)

Seems to work perfectly on Italian unlocked Treo 680.
Thank you.

does 650 have auto text-replacement?

killinghawk

Of course there is auto-correction. But the file for Treo 680 is not compatible with Treo 650. Here is the patched file for Treo 650: HsExtensions2.0_enUS-patched-Treo650.zip (http://killinghawk.wz.cz/HsExtensions2.0_enUS-patched-Treo650.zip).

Copy it to RAM and perform soft reset to disable the automatic corrections.

don't install that file! there are more than 2 types of treo 650 HsExtensions2 files. (as i just found out while adding support for it to PowerDict).

anyways at least 2 types of treo 650s are now supported. try and tel me how it goes. app and sources are updated in the PalmPowerups download section.

The file I posted SHOULD WORK with Treo 650 Unlocked GSM FW 1.20 ENA. Of course, any differences in other versions of FW are possible.

Working great. Thanks Dmitry!

What a great little application... thank you Dmitry! :)
It works great on my Treo 650.

I am using it as an automatic spelling corrector for Portuguese (my native language).
Would it be possible to have it working inside Documents to Go?

D2G does not use standard text box control, and thus the HsExtensions library does not do corrections there.

My app just edits the HsExtension's correction list (as you can see in its source code which comes with it), so unless D2G starts using standard controls or HsExtensions learned to talk to D2G it is unlikely.

Is there a version that works on a Verizon Treo 755p? Great idea - I have been trying to find a way to edit that list since I got my 700p a couple years ago, now a 755p.

dmitrygr

Mr G - did you get my ROMs (Sprint 650, 700p -> 755, Centro)? Sent them several days ago (Gmail)

dmitrygr
09-19-2008, 02:26 PM
i never figured out which were which. can you tell me the names of the files and the correspondence to devices. The files i got had no names (attachements without names)

DickieD
09-19-2008, 04:49 PM
Can't be talking about my emails then - I sent all three as separate emails, all with the name of the attached ROM in both the text of the email and definitely as the name of the attachment itself.

dmitrygr
09-19-2008, 05:16 PM
let me recheck then on a PC

v1.3 is out with centro support

DickieD

N e one out there with a 700p or 755 with the stock ROM that has tested PD? It's working fine on my 650 and Centro (now), but not the 700p with 755 flash ROM, and Sprint is taking too long with my 700p replacement (another story...), so wanted to know if it is indeed working for others.

dmitrygr
09-19-2008, 11:57 PM
755 shoudl be supported (and 755 rom is enough to be 755)

DickieD
09-20-2008, 12:37 AM
I assumed so, which is why I don't knowhy it's not working for the 700p with the ROM flash (especially if you used the ROM I sent you to add its support, since that is what I sent you). Hopefully I'll get my regular 700p back today (don't feel like back-grading the ROM on this one) and I'll test on that - if it works; grate. If not, I'll send you that ROM too

dmitrygr
09-20-2008, 12:49 AM
just looked....your roms is diff...weird... :-(
i'll add support

DickieD

EGGsellant!

To note, after playing with this thing on my 650 and Centro, it seems I was SOOOOO very wrong because this seems SOOOOO much more efficient and faster than using shortcuts... and now I can use any shortcut key I want!

(Well... by "now", I of course mean 1nce the 700p is supported ... which I assume will be the case when I wake up)

...BTW - like the screenshot (attached)?

I know this is a Treo 680 thread, but does this app work with any Palm OS 5+ ?

I am often on WiFi with my LD on forums and the like. Typing/Tapping can sometimes get messy. It would be great to have autocomplete and word replacements as I typed.

I doubt it.
There are tools available for generic OS5 usage. TextPlus is one which I have been using for quite some years already.

Thanks!! I will check TextPlus out. (Wonder if there are other similar apps) -OT

The latest version of PowerDict (mytreo.net/downloads/search.html?search=powerdict) works with n e 5.x device with HsExtensions 2.
