View Full Version : Enterprise WiFi security update: how long?

My university recently switched to a high level of wireless encryption that won't work with the built-in TX WiFi. So I bought the fancy upgrade software from Palm.
The instructions sharply warn you not to turn off the device during the upgrade process. But of course, the instructions say nothing at all about how long to expect it to take, even though the upgrade is only for TX's and the time should be quite predictable; and to make it worse, there's no progress bar at all.
So the thing has been sitting there, with a motionless dialog box saying "Copying update files" for the past 40 minutes or so, and I don't know whether it's working or has crashed and frozen. I'm pretty sure it's the latter, and that my TX is bricked, and I'm screwed. But ...
Does anybody have any experience with this Enterprise security update, and some idea of how long it ought to take? Am I doomed?

I have the enterprise security for my TX. It lets me connect to my university's PEAP wifi network, and is the sole reason I haven't upgraded to a LifeFlash or Nokia N810. The update takes a long time, but not 40min; takes around like 5-10min, if I remember correctly.

Thanks for the info. That's what I was afraid of. I had to leave the thing at home at lunch (DON'T DISCONNNECT THE UNIT DURING THE UPGRADE) and returned to work without it. I'm heading back home in a few minutes, which means it will have had, oh, about three or four hours to do its upgrade. I guess by now if it's still stuck on the same message, I'll have to call what is laughably known as "Palm tech support."
Oh me ...

have u tried resetting it? it overwrites overflow, so as long as you do not do a hard reset, it should boot ok. so reset and install again

Before I saw this message (thanks for it, by the way), I got home and found that the TX was still stuck on "Copying files" or whatever. I figured it was dead, but as Dimitry noted, I was able to soft reset it, and try again. This time (don't ask me what was different this time, other than that it was the second time instead of the first), it worked. It was actually less than a minute from start to the automatically triggered hard reset, and then just the usual time for that reset to complete.
I'm at home now, and not near my "Enterprise Wireless" system, so I'll have to wait until tomorrow to give it a try.
(I restored all my data with an NVBackup backup; I hope that didn't just overwrite or undo the security upgrade. If it did, at least I think I know how to handle it.)
Thanks to commenters for your comments. Thank heaven I didn't have to call Palm tech support.

you did not undo it, but you did overwrite it
:-)
you need to hard reset now
and in nvbackup do a SELECTIVE restore
and skip all files that sound like they have anything to to with network or wifi

Well, crap. But that's what I'll do. Will report on outcome after i get to work tomorrow.
(Thanks!)
