I ran the Sprint Centro updater last night and my phone no longer works. At 1st, everything looked fine. I used NV backup to replace my apps and settings. Google Maps with location works, blazer works. I paired my bluetooth headset again. But, I realized their wasn't any system sounds (no clicks etc.). I checked the mute switch. I then tried to make a call with different methods. Bluetooth and no headset. Absolutely no sound came from the speaker or headset, the friend I called couldn't hear me at all and the big button to switch to speakerphone or to not use the headset was not there on the screen. I can't get any sound to come out of it, not even music from Pocket Tunes. Sprint tech couldn't do anything, but will give me a new Centro today. I will wait to see what Palm does and not install the update on my new Centro.

Did you try it without restoring the backup? Some databases could be specific to each rom/firmware version.
I would do a hard reset and try the phone, sounds, bluetooth, etc. If it works, do a selective restore avoiding system databases and preferences.

I tried all that. I also tried to reload the update, it was Sprint's tech that suggested trying again. Thanks for the reply, but even after a hard reset and nothing is installed, it still isn't working. My phone is naked right now.

From this thread on TreoCentral, Sprint Firmware Update (http://discussion.treocentral.com/showthread.php?t=167975), other people are experiencing issues when they use NVBackup for this.
I did it using only HotSync, and had no issues, except a Java installation I had not been using now seems to be broken and I don't know how/which files to remove to clean it out.

Miner, I skimmed through that site and it doesn't look like anyone is having a problem like mine. This is just weird. Right now, there is no additional software on the device. I have not restored the phone at all.

Cannot tell you how to fix, but I can tell you why it broke. There is a file in the Java installation that cannot be backed up by Hotsync do to a bug or limitation (depending on your point of view), thus this file is not flagged for backup and thus is not backed up by Hotsync. The usual fix is to reinstall the Java Run-time.

JiL, I didn't mean to imply that someone in that thread the same problem you are seeing. That would be too easy.
NVBackup was mentioned a few times as a suspect cause of some issues, and someone figured out a workaround for most of them.

Well, I got a new phone, did the update, Hotsynced and everything is working great. For some reason, my new phone's screen is no where near as bright as my old phone. That's ok, I was told by Sprint's tech dept last night that I would be getting a refurb (ick). But they gave me a new Centro instead (yeah). :D Thanks for the help.
Louis :)
Btw Miner, you're right, that would've been way too easy. I Hotsynced this time.
