View Full Version : How should I set UDMH for Pixel Browser?

I looked a lot of threads, but I really don't know ANYTHING about UDMH, so the information I found wasn't enough.

I asked Dimitry through mail and he adviced me to ask it here.

So I have Picsel Broswer working in my TX, and I wanna set it in UDMH, but there's A LOT of options and I don't know what would be the best setting for Picsel Browser.

Might anyone guide me through all the settings?

THANK YOU!

Go to Config>Add>Pixel Browser and leave everything alone, AFAIK. If it leaves parts of DBCache allocated for itself (usually indicated by memory leaks - easiest way is to run it in POSE [IDK if the Simulator will tell you this, but it probably will], exit, and see if it says anything about memory. If it does, then tick "Clean up for this app." Otherwise, just leave the "Show ___ K of dynamic memory" field blank or put in a 0 for automatic cache resizing, or put in a specific amount. I just put in five 9's. That way it puts it at the largest cache size UDMH can do. (For me that's 34,436. ;) ) Good luck, and welcome to 1src! :D

I always enable "clean up" for all apps. If the app doesn't need it, nothing's lost, and if it does, stability is gained.

You can't run Picsel Browser in POSE, because it is ARM based.

Thanks to the three of you for your answers :)

After I installed UDMH my palm became a bit unstable. Might it be the application? Should I give it another try?

Oh. Nevermind then...
@Gerardo G.: Did you install anything else?

Actually no. It's been a while since I've installed something new. I had backed up my system before installing UDMH, so I did a hard reset and restored to that point. I'm gonna install it again tomorrow, or the day after, and keep you posted.

Thank you all for your help.

Sorry for the delay. So I've used my palm a couple of times in the last few days with UDMH installed, and this time it doesn't seem to be giving me any trouble :)

So thanks to UDMH now I'm supposed to be able to open bigger PDF files and heavier webpages in Picsel Browser?

Thanks for all your help :)

¿Can you believe that UDMH and Picsel Browser are now in clonflict in my Palm ?

I had my palm replaced so I decided to install everything from scratch, but now when I enable UDMH with the Picsel Browser settings and enter Picsel Browser, a window with strange characters appears. If I press NO, it leaves the application and if I press the other option (with weird characters) it soft resets my palm. And even if I press NO, it still eventually soft resets no matter in what application I'm in at that momment !

The only way I'm able to make Picsel Browser work is by not enabling UDMH, and that just doesn't make any sense, since it's supposed to work better with it, not without it .

With my last palm I had seen that window a couple of times, and it did leave the application if I pressed NO (though it didn't eventually reset), and when I pressed the other option with the weird characters it did soft reset, but after that, I was able to enable once again UDMH and everything worked ok.

ARGHH! This is frustrating  +

Please give me some ideas.

What hacks, event handlers, etc., do you have installed (ie, Yahm hacks, button launchers, etc.)?

Has any of you ever encountered the window I'm talking about? What is that window about?

I'm gonna do a hard reset on my palm and just install both UDMH and Picsel Browser to see if it's another application doing this. I'll do it tomorrow or the day after, and post about it here.

Thanks for your help :)

Rather than doing hard resets, have you tried Uncache and/or Clean Start to isolate the potentially offending apps?

UDMH version 5.x has never worked with Picsel Browser that I have seen.

UDMH version 3.x has worked with Picsel Browser.

Just before the time version 5.x came out, Picsel blew a head gasket over the ripping and hacking going on here at 1src on their Picsel Browser product.

I don't know about you... but the math is pretty simple if you ask me.

Quit yer complainin - you are using software you didn't rightfully pay for, and you don't have permission to use anyway. If you figure out how to use it, good job. It's not Dmitry's job to make it work for you. Nor is it his job to tell you that he enabled/disabled its use in 'x' version of UDMH.

Too bad I don't have a device to run PB on anymore. I'd love to test it out. ;)

UDMH 3.x CAN and MIGHT brick your device!!!!!!

Don't use it ;)

Using your NVFS device CAN and MIGHT brick your device.

Inherit disadvantage of the way they implemented it. ;)

icefireicefire

But NVFS and UDMH 3.x can EASILY brick your device (esp if it is an E2, Treo 650, or TX....)

And just where did you hear this? Besides Dmitry. ;)

Version 5 implemented the mandatory information required by PalmGear, and disabled PB.

Dmitry 'said' it worked on NVFS, but I'm going to play the skeptic. This version was to please Picsel, and please PalmGear.

The commercial program mentioned is UDMH, the latest version is 5.3. UDMH works with Picsel for me -- maybe you have a bad version? PM me and I can send you the best version (custom hacked/prepaired by me :D)...

if you look at my reaction when palm told me to change name you'd know full well i'd not bend to the likes of small companies like picsel and palmgear? haha

5.x udmh fixes some nvfs bugs. that why version 3.x bricked some T|E2s

Yeah you're right, I was winning... sorry about that. I really wasn't asking directly to Dmitry anything, though I'm always REALLY grateful for his help. There's just so much I don't know about palms and I've found very helpful to share my doubts here with the rest of the forum members, and I've tried to also be helpful to others with what little I know :)

THANKS TO ALL OF YOU FOR YOUR HELP :D

It just amazes me how things can work different in two palms that are supposed to be the same :) Well I did a hard reset and just installed UDMH and Picsel Browser. Nothing changed, but I did find out something: in my last TX I set it at it's highest, which I think it was 34,436K; but in this case, that's what makes Picsel Browser not work. Now I leave it in auto, and the window with the weird characters doesn't show any more. Is UDMH still helping Picsel Browser if it's in auto?

Again, sorry and thank you.

The memory setting is JUST to say how much RAM to SHOW, not how much to let the app use. UDMH always lets the app use the full amount of RAM. However, some apps check the RAM first, so you can trick them with that setting. the only ones that are known to do that are MetaView's ports IIRC.

Don't change anything in UDMH but enable it unless you really know what you are doing.

Thanks :)

So does UDMH really help Picsel Browser open does pretty big files, without the need of showing a bigger RAM?

Do you recommend me then not to check "Skip quit" nor "Clean after app"? I used to have them both checked for Picsel Browser in my last TX.

do NOT set ANY settings in UDMH without either my advice or a MASTER's DEGREE in Computer Science and good understanding of UDMH source code. It is not needed!

Ok, I got it :p

But you WERE the one that recommended me to ask here how to set Picsel Browser in UDMH, and they DID tell me that they usually put the max number in "show dynamic memory" and checked "clean up after app" in their apps.

Hey, there's no blushing smily to select!
