View Full Version : Is Flash Player Massively Overhyped?

Given all the great Flash content on the web, the Flash Player was one of the key reasons I upgraded to an NX-70v. But after searching around and trying a few, I can't find a single Flash file worth keeping on my PDA. What's up with that? Have I missed the "Killer App" for this feature? Or is the Flash Player just a flop?

Has anyone found anything worth keeping on their machine?

I have a Nx70v aswell and i just resently found out how to enable the sound on the flash player. Before the sound was working i did think it was a bit useless because lots of flash files arent as good without the sound but now ive started putting loads of flash files on my clie. It just depends what you want. I want to put games and funny vids on mine so theres plenty.

heres a site with tons of stuff

http://www.fetchfido.co.uk/games/menu/games_menu.htm

bottom right theres a whole list of flash stuff that can be used.
have fun

I think it's a neat feature, but the camera and MP3 player is much more functional IMHO

I was never impressed with the Flash Player, it also has a lot of limitations.

I guess I missed all the hype, so no biggie to me. I didn't even know it was a feature until I got my NX.

I've only tried loading Flash that looks to be the dimensions of the Clie screen. Do other Flash files (such as landscape ones) works as well?

Some do, I've tried this Operababy one from a website and it fit fine. I usually will rotate the image and hide the graffiti area.

how did you get sound to work?

Gotta use the hack which lets you use mp3 sound i s'pose..

I've innstalled it on my NZ90, and it works flawlessly(Only needed to copy one file to ram, and it worked)

I've had one problem with playing flash files after listening to mp3's, but that only takes a soft-reset to fix.

Which hack?

Not a hack, but an upgrade. It is the Flash Player with MP3 support and includes a volume control at the top. Here is the link, just install per directions in Zip file.

How do you download the swf files from this site?

I use a utility from BrotherSoft called GetFlash. It allows you to grab about any embedded Flash file.

Check it out here (http://www.brothersoft.com/homepage/getflash/).

Sorry i havent replied in a while.
Well i learnt this trick a while ago. What i do to get the files is mildly tricky but once you get it working once its pretty straight forward for any other file.

I use the following :

Getright -download tool
IE
MS export - just to transfer the files

thats all you need. Heres how to do it :

1. Got to the web page which has the flash file you want on it.
2. click on view at the top of IE and then click on source.
3. Once the source has loaded up in a text editor (automaticlly), use the find function on the text editor and search for '.swf' . now once it highlights the .swf look at the name of the file and you have to decided whether this is the file you are trying to d/l. You have to do this because many sites have links for the macromedia flash player and so have a .swf ending.

For example if im looking a battleship flash game then i would expect the name to be somthing like this :

/Flash/battleships.swf

It took me a few trys to get the right file but once u can easily choose its pretty simple from here on. So going back to my example. Ive found the right name and file (.swf) then i copy the bit shown above with the url of the webpage.

the url :

www.forexample.com

the file :

/flash/battleships.swf

=
www.forexample.com/flash/battleships.swf

hopefully u still follow.

next load getright and go to File, Enter new URL. type or copy +paste the link as above in to it. It should start a download box and begin connecting to that file. A way of checking that this is the right file is looking at the size of the download as this will give u some idea because if its only 10 k big it isnt likely to be a 2 minunte long flash file.
Anyway i hope ppl can follow this guide as i didnt fully understand it the first few times i tried it. (my friend explained it to me).

if there are any problems just send me a email and ill try to help.

I must have screwed up the transfer of the file to enable mp3 sound with flash files because now the Flash Player (F) icon disappeared from my original launcher and what is left, an MMFlash icon won't load (?) How do I re-install the original Flash player? From the Sony installation disc? Thanks for the help :)

I've found Flash player to be pretty useful. Some nice games, utilities, and programs that run pretty quickly in Flash are always helpful. The only thing, there needs to be a way to overclock the NX. Sometimes, the Flash file is just too slow.

I did the same thing and it is pretty tricky to undo. You must have just hotsynced both .prc applications at once. You need to use McFile to delete the MMFlash (this is the tricky part since the Clie won't allow you to delete it at first...unclick the read only button ..then delete. Then follow the instructions exactly to reload.

Yep there's one which works on Windows, Linux, MacOS9, MacOS X ...
It's called Mozilla Firebird. Install it, start it, browse to the page where you can watch the Flash file, right click, page info, media. Now select the Flash file, and Save As ...
