Hello all.

I've got a TH-55, and I've been using a 64Mb memory stick with no problems. A friend has given me a SanDisk 4Gb memory stick pro duo. I've tried it with the adaptor, and it is not recognised by my Clie. I've done a bit of research on the various Sony support sites, and it appears that the 4Gb stick is not supported on my Clie.

Does anyone know a way around this? Is there a patch I can use to get it to recognise the memory stick? I'm really keen to get it to work, because otherwise the memory stick will be going in the bin!

Thanks for your help.

fat32 driver should be OK but you can't use audioplayer with a fat32 MS.

look at :
http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?t=101452&page=3&highlight=4GB

golalmo tells he formated his 4Gb MS with PSP (FAT16) and can use 4Gb.

Hello,

IMHO the FAT32 driver mentioned before is a good thing but I prefer to stay with my old 2GB memorysticks keeping all stock applications working.

And remember that not all 2GB memorysticks are compatible with the TH55.

On the subject of Memory Sticks and TH55, I am wondering if a 2GB Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo Card will work in the PDA.
This is the small card with adapter, is dark in color and says "High Speed" on it.
Lately I have been putting movies on the TH55 and getting 2 on a 500mb stick and think it would be cool to be able to have 8 on one stick.
Before buying one of these, I would like to know if this stick will work in my PDA.
Thanks for this forum. It has provided a ton of information to us owners.

According to this chart, some of the MS Pros require a software update. But when I look at the Sony support site, I only find downloads of MS Pro update programs for the TG50, NZ90, and NX60/NX70V - none specifically for the TH-55.

Should I use the TG-50 update?

bump

Should I d/l the TG50 update since there's not one for the TH55?

Background:
I never was able to resolve my problems with playing mp3s on the 1 & 2 gb memory sticks that I chronicled here (http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?t=141489) and here (http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?t=141889)

so I thought I'd get down to basics and ensure I had the correct update referred to in the Sony chart and then I'll ensure that my big MSs [none of which are Sony products, rather are SanDisk and Lexars] have been formatted "in the Clie" as opposed to not having been.

cactus,
I don't know about installing the TG50 software update. But looking through your linked posts on this issue, I don't see that you've ever determined that you have correct MP3s (for the persnickity TH55 audio player). If not, perhaps you should first determine that it's not your particular songs being incompatible. You can test by putting any Leo Laporte podcast, or any NPR podcast into the MSAUDIO directory.

Here's an NPR podcast (http://www.npr.org/rss/podcast/podcast_detail.php?siteId=89697155) that should be compatible with the TH55 (hit the download button on the page).

I was finally able to listen to mp3 tracks by carefully going through all the suggestions I've had on these three threads. But I'm left with one question that I'll get to in a bit.

First, I verified that I was able to hear an mp3 on a 1GB ms that had been newly formatted in the TH55. Thanks, "jj2me" for pointing me to that check.

Second, I d/l-ed dBpoweramp to ascertain the specifics of the "old" mp3s that had been giving me fits - sure enough, recorded at VBR.

Third, I tried to convert the mp3s using the dB converter - all had errors which I couldn't find a quick answer to at the dBpoweramp forums - when I have more time, I'll post over there and try to figure it out.

Fourth, using dB cd ripper, I ripped new mp3 tracks setting the encoder to CBR, moved the files to a newly-formatted MS, directly under MSAUDIO. Success when I tried to listen.

Now for the question: since "olderTechnology"'s wisdom about needing to store files directly in the MSaudio FOLDER, what is the best naming convention to ensure that I can keep album tracks together and in order? I read "olderTechnology" to say that I can't have MSAUDIO/Bob Newhart/track1 - that it has to be MSAUDIO/bobnewharttrack1, then MSAUDIO/bobnewharttrack1....moving on to MSAUDIO/beatlestrack1 through MSAUDIO/beatlestrack900.

Am I making sense? Does the naming convention set in the ripper automatically keep albums together? If I end up having to re-rip everything instead of converting what I have already ripped, I don't want to go down the wrong path.

Thanks to everyone who has responded and given me clues: jj2me, olderTechnology, Cyker, Aces and JavaJiveJump.

Thanks for the answers to my question. I am going to go for a 2gb High Speed Memory Stick Pro Duo and see what happens.
Whatever happens I will let you know.

Well, the 2GB HS PRO came today and works like a champ. I can get 8 movies on it. Nice $3.50 investment.

@cactus - Bit late alas, but here goes:

The TH55 and most OS5 Sony Clies ONLY support MP3s which are 44.1kHz CBR. The bitrate can be anything from 32kbps to 320kbps and they can be stereo or mono.

Most OS4 Clies have better DSPs and can also process VBR MP3s, but otherwise with the same restrictions.

Playback order:
There are two things you can do:
1) Put the AudioPlayer in "Program Play" mode (Tap the Continue/Shuffle/Reverse button), and then tap the Edit Playlist icon (It looks like a piece of paper with a musical note to the bottom right. The icon is in the top right of the screen) - Here you can add/remove and drag tunes around until they're in the right order.

2) Fire up CardImport/DataImport, then move all your music out of the MSAUDIO folder OFF the Clie into a temp folder on your PC, then copy them all back ONE BY ONE in the order you want them to be played back. The Clie AudioPlayer reads files in the order they're stored on the MS' FAT table.

There was a Windows utility which could re-write the FAT table order without all the copying, but I can't find it...
