View Full Version : Backing up my memory stick?

I've been using handhelds "forever", but I'm just now getting into the use of the memory stick. Before I go ahead and move lots of stuff there, I have one question I haven't been able to track an answer down for:
How do I back up my memory stick? If I lose my handheld, I can always restore the RAM files from my computer backup. It doesn't appear that hotsyncing looks at my MS, however.
I'm using a T615C on a WinXP box. Thanks for any help.

I haven't done this myself, but see below:

Backup Buddy will backup your memory stick when you hot sync and I believe that there are a few, free, programs that will just backup the stick. Might want to look and see if these will work for you... I have learned the hard way, like you just did, to copy what I like to my Photo directory...

I just copy my MS to a backup folder on my hard drive. In fact I keep a series of them.
Never rely on the Desktop PC's backup. It's all too easily corrupted. Keep multiple RAM backups in a series just in case you backup and find out later that backup has a problem with it.

Why not use Backupbuddy from http://www.backupbuddy.com/ and then copy all of the contents of the MS to a PC?

I don't trust automated backups, that's why!
It's just as easy and quick to do it manually, and I feel more secure about it.

Why don't you use MSImport on the CLIE? This will make the MS a virtual drive on the PC and so you can copy the entire MS drive into a folder in the PC.
Also, backupbuddy may not back up everything in the MS - just the stuff it recognises (hence zip files may be skipped!).

I'm on the opposite side as Larry. I don't trust manual backups, because unless you're obsessive/compulsive, it's hard to maintain a regular manual backup process. So, for this reason, I use BackupBuddy to back up my MS on each hotsync. The negative of this method is that it's very time-consuming.
As for yorrick's comment that backupbuddy won't backup everything on the MS, it's just wrong. It backs up everything on the MS into a separate directory from the RAM files, and it maintains the entire directory structure that you have on the MS.

Basically whatever works for you :)
I guess I am obsessive/compulsive, but it's my precious Clie we are talking about. I have been burned before, so I prepare for the worst case scenario. I am not tellimg anyone what to do, only what I do. Again I will state, do NOT rely on the desktop backup! ! !
I have had situations where I had to erase the desktop backup, reformat my MS, and hard reset the Clie. Yes, memory sticks can get corrupted, especially if you do something stupid or have a power outage at the wrong time :)
The point of all this is to have a game plan and approach when the inevitible happens, not if... :D

rldunn, maybe OC n2ifp just has more time to do backups?
another vote for automation. Backupbuddy has restored my Clie without problem on more than one occasion.

I've needed my backups plenty of times before, and it's a wonderful piece of mind to know that everything is covered. Now if I could only get a backup system for my PC that was this good!! :)
