I have a t-415 which has dreadful screen contrast but that I've used quite a lot as a convenient and light ebook reader. I love Clié's hires which makes ebook reading so pleasant.
I thought about buying a NX for the extra screen size, but have decided it's not worth it really...
I can live with the small screen but I definitely need a readable screen during daytime without having to look for the right angle of light and still get poor contrast. The t-415's backlight is totally useless during daytime, you dont' even know it's there.
Would the sj-22 screen be vastly superior to the t-415 ie perfectly readable in daytime light with or w/o backlight?
Thanks for your advice, great forum...

SJ-20, you don't need color for ebooks, and If you're an avid reader like I am, you'll run through batteries to fast to make the SL-10 a viable option. People whine about slow screen refreshing, but in my opinion, unless you read at the speed of sound, you won't notice:D

I upgraded to an SJ30 (same as an SJ22 pretty well) because I read a lot and it's great. I always have the backlight on at ~20% Great for reading in bed, fine for reading outside. A perk with getting colour is that I use my clie a lot more as an organizer because I can colour code stuff.

My advice is the SJ20. It has a nice paper backlight, which gives a sharp contrast with the black letters.
However, if you are reading many books at night, like me, you'd want to consider a colour model. The good thing is, for example with Palmreader Pro, you can select a black background, and white letters, while sliding the brightness slider waaaay back to the left, and still have ample contrast on the screen. This way, you can read your eBook all night long and still have 100% batteries left.

SJ-20 works just fine in the dark, there's no better contrast than black on white.:)

I read ebooks extensively through out the day, this was one of the primary reasons that I bought a pda, my considerations were battery life, and screen visibility on all lighting conditions. I settled for an SJ30, but it's the same as an SJ22.
As for the SJ30's performance as an ebook pda....
1. Screen visibility is good, from bright and direct sunlight to indoors, to low light, to total darkness, no problem.
2.You won't be able to tell the difference when you're in direct sunlight if the backlight is on, so I always turn the backlight off, saves on batteries too. It's perfectly readable, don't worry, but it's not "black on white", it's more like "black on green".
3. When you're in the shade, it gets a little more difficult to read without the backlight, but you can still find the right angle, or you can just turn the backlight on.
4. In total darkness, even with the backlight on almost the leftmost side of the slider, it's still plenty bright.
5. All in all, I use the backlight at the one fourth setting most of the time, although I turn the backlight way up when I'm showing off my baby's pictures. Using the backlight at one-fourth setting does produce a bluish tint though.
6. Battery life lasts for about 9 to 10 hours at one-fourth backlight setting, even more if you turn it off whenever your reading outdoors. (This is just for ebook reading, if you play games, or movie clips, battery life will be considerably less.)
Bottom line, if you have the money to spare, I say go for the SJ30 or SJ22, you get a very nice ebook reader, plus games and photos look nicer in color. You may feel that you don't need color at the moment, but you may regret it later. But if your really on a tight budget, the SJ20 is not a bad choice.

Please also note that SJ20 has better contrast and readability than SJ30/SJ22 in outdoor!
I think it's because the screen of SJ20 has higher light reflection ability; but it's still far lower than "traditional" B&W model like Vx.
Anyway, I will suggest you go for SJ20 for huge e-book reading. For fun too? Then go for SJ20. It's worth still.

(I'm the thread initiator) Thanks for all the advice! I think I'll go for the sj-20, especially if the screen contrast is better in daylight. For 149usd, it's hard to go wrong anyway...

It can be a hard choice, but even though some have rated it as overkill and not necessary I could never go back to a smaller screen after using my NX70V as an eBook reader. It allows me to read almost an entire page of text before having to scroll down. As for outside readability, I have no problems with that.
