Hi all,
I'm wondering if there is any way around the crappy 128kbps CBR MP3 limitation of my new NX-60. Perhaps another MP3 player someone can recommend that can do higher quality than this? I've got gigs and gigs of high-quality LAME 3.91-encoded --alt preset extreme VBR MP3s, (just about my entire CD collection) and I am not exactly relishing the idea of having to go reconvert wavs into poorer-quality128 CBR files.
Can anyone help me? I've tried looking at the bright side- I can fit so many more of these 128s in my clie...but I really want my high-quality files.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

You don't have to encode at 128kbps. The NX can do from 96kbps up to 320kbps (I believe).

I have some 192 CBR MP3s on my NX70V and they work fine.
Even from the CF card (with the CF driver of course).
I haven't tried anything higher than that yet.
I know you said you have an NX60, but I don't thnik there is any difference in the MP3 players between the 60 and the 70.
Someone else correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks for the quick reply.
Well that's at least somewhat good news. I could have sworn that I read 128kbps was the limit, but I double checked and see that you are right.
However, this still means I'd have to re-encode lots o' mp3s, so...any way around the CBR only limitation?

I rip all my cd's on 160kbps CBR and the ones I like at 320. Works like a charm on my NX. I see no advantage of VBR other then space/bandwith saving ... wich I think is an outdated issue ;)

Did you have to apply the clie upgrade patch to play higher than 128K CBR files?

96kbps always sounded fine to me. I can always use my mini-disc player too. Actually it's a lot lighter and I don't worry about dropping it and breaking the LCD screen.

CDEx makes it *really* easy to reconvert your files. Just set the output directory and encoding settings; then, drag some files onto the interface, click Encode, and wait a little while.
Oh, and it uses LAME, 'course. :-)

I use EAC + LAME (also encoded --alt-preset extreme), and it can't be played in my NX60 correctly, either.
encoded --alt-preset insane is ok.
