View Full Version : Holidays 1.1.6 for $00.00 or MegaHoldays for 12.95? Hmmmm...........

Again, I'm trying to decide if I should spend money for an application or just stay with the free one. I just found this nice Holiday application (here's the link: http://www.palmgear.com/software/showsoftware.cfm?sid=34085920021219050255&prodID=29622) that allows one to configure their own holidays, and also includes a few Holiday databases. I'm trying to decide if I want to pay $12.95 for MegaHoliday's, or just stay with the free Holidays 1.1.6. I am well capable of making a decision when it comes to these matters, but I would like to hear the opinions of others concerning certain applications; not only for my sake but for the sake of those that are, perhaps, trying to make the same type of decision; or for those that are just looking for quality freeware applications. :)

It looks like the free one requires you to do more work (i.e., create your own) while they others include extensive built-in databases and background info on the holidays.
Frankly, if I'm going to add my own holidays, I'll put them right into DateBk5. I don't see the value of using a separate app. I could categorize them as HOLIDAYS and then view them all in a filtered list view if I wanted to just see upcoming holidays.
The value in the other programs is that they provide the holidays. If I was traveling extensively, it would probably be worth the $10-13 to have this info handy (and not be required to manually add it).

If you are only interested in US holidays, give HolidaysUSA a try. It's free and is all you will ever (and I mean ever!) need.

I agree and here is another link.

I honestly don't have an opinion on the other two mentioned. I have been using this app almost since I first got a Clie and have had no reason to look for others.
It doesn't provide for adding holidays, but it does have a couple of subsets, including a favorites subset that you can configure to your needs from it's fairly extensive DB. Can add your set of holidays to Datebook with a simple tap.

I just gave Holiday USA a try, and I think Holidays 1.1.6 is a much better application. One of the features I really like about Holidays 1.1.6 is that you can assign dbk5 or Agendus icons to the Holidays. This is really useful. I do agree with some of hherbzilla reasons for choosing to pay for MegaHolidays rather than stay with the freeware. I myself don't travel much so all I really need is a US database. I don't mind adding in what few holidays may not be included with Holidays 1.1.6. I think the ability to add in holidays manually is very useful since there are certain holidays (such as Pastors Appreciation month) that aren't mentioned in any other Holiday application. I think I'm leaning on staying with the freeware application for now. The features are still very useful, and if one person from each nation chose to configure their nations holidays and uploaded them here, people wouldn't have to worry about configuring it themselves. Just a thought.

On your recommendation, I'll give Holidays 1.1.6 a look. Thanks.

I was looking for a similar program last week and found one on YahooGroups in their MS Outlook group. It plugs the holidays into outlook and, assuming you sync your clie to Outlook, will then sync the holidays into your Palm calendar. It is free.

Hmmm, actually Holidays is a nice little program. I loaded it, copied it to DB5, and then set up a custom view that just shows holidays. Sweet.

if you sync with outlook, i've just use it's built in holiday feature to import the holidays into a holiday category, then in datebk5 you can set up that category to have a holiday icon and color, and do a custom view like hherbzilla has shown. that's what i do--works great.

pbr: for some reason I'm not able to see holidays for 2003 in outlook.... I'm using Outlook 2000... Any clues on to why they show from 98-02, but then stop there?
Thanks,
-Nate
