View Full Version : PicSel for PDF viewer - SUCKS WIND!
I regularly deal with rather large PDF files (200+ pages) I use for reference. I thought that PicSel would be a great addition to my mobile device. The problem is, it can't render more than about 7 pages of any of my manuals without running out of memory.
It seems that when you open the PDF, it attempts to render the entire file into some kind of cache for rapid pagination. This is a memory intensive task, and I can find no way of configuring the application to pre-render only one or two pages.
What should I use for a PDF viewer that uses the hires (preferably hires+) capabilities of the NX, supports VFS, and maintains an "excellent" level of PDF formatting?

Did you try RepliGo?

No, I haven't.
I wanted to exhaust all possibilites for applications that did not require conversion - which requires the use of a Windows box.
Do you know if Repligo is bundled with any shipping devices?

No, but it's conversion is not bad and it integrates with Word, Excel, and I.E.
Nothing else that I am aware of that reads PDF documents natively on the Clie, except for Picsel. RepliGo is the best I have seen for converted docs.
And compared to Picsel's awkward interface, Repligo is a breeze to use on the Clie, especially with the Flowed text view which allows you to view a document without having to scroll left and right.
Also, just about any document that you can print, can be converted to view on Repligo.

Repligo can switch to landscape mode, which is great. Plus, when you install it on your PC it puts a nifty icon on your Internet Explorer toolbar. See a cool review on a web site? Just click on the Repligo icon and it will convert and be ready for hotsyncing. Very cool. I'm definitely going to buy this software. IT makes reading so easy.
Everyone goes on and on about iSilo. Haven't played with that yet. I wish Adobe would take Palm more seriously. They need to update Acrobat Reader for Palm. I know they're shaking in their boots because Microsoft announced they were going to "embrace & extend" Windows to include a similar reader technology, so we'll see whether Adobe gets on the ball. Their reader is very close to being great. Just a few enhancements and everyone would be happy.
Until then Repligo is great. It's one of those "show off" apps you'll show everyone.. That's how cool it is.

Just tried Replico on my NZ for pdf files, I think it is good for small pdfs, but for pdf over hundreds of pages, it takes forever to load the converted file....
What I find the best solution (for reading large pdf files in palm) up to now is this:
1. Install Acrobat. (not reader)
2. Install Iceni Gemini
http://www.iceni.com/geminiSet.html
3. Open the pdf in Acrobat, convert it to html using Gemini
4. Convert the htmls + images generated by iSiloX.
I know this is not a cheap solution (as you need Acrobat, Gemini + iSilo), but it is very easy to convert once you get used to this method.
My reason behind is, iSilo is great for reading huge documents (with images), and it is very fast in loading them (I have a 350M pdb file in my CF, iSilo only used 5 secs to load it in my NZ), and best of all, it supports Hi-Rez 320x480, which is great for pdf viewing.
Yikes, $159 for Gemini!
Why not just break up those large documents into smaller, manageable ones? For instance, I loaded the Datebk5 User Manual (100+ pages) by making 4 smaller documents (Pages 1-25, Pages 26-50...). Now I don't have to wait forever to load that huge document.

I am suprised that you are having difficulties with picsel. It loads remarkably fast on my clie in comparison to other viewers. It also lets you view the documents as you load. Ive veiwed 100 page documents withought memory problems and i only keep less than 1.5 megs of ram free. The graphics on picsel are so much smother than other software, not to mention the sweet interface.

I feel your pain. I view 80-100 pagers too. This is a lot to ask. Picsel is kinda cool to view native, but Repligo is more practical for me. There's a need for a really good PDF viewer on Palm, as good as word2go is with word docs. I dont really think there is one.

I know I know...then anybody knows a cheaper solution which can convert pdf to htmls + images, and reasonably conserve the layout?

It's true that Repligo needs a while to load when you open up a large document, but it is not "forever". I am using it to read PDF documents with 400 pages and it needs about 45 seconds to load. But after initial load it is lightning fast. The loading time is only a problem if you want to switch between documents or applications often.
I am quite satisfied with Repligo and find the way it integrates with all kind of Windows Applications ("virtual printer") very elegant and easy.
I am not using a Macintosh (not that there is anything WRONG with that), but I would like to be able to change desktop OS without cripling my PDA. Also, I use FTP to pull files wirelessly as needed.
Some questions/comments:
I must be doing something wrong. Here:
http://www.hp.com/cposupport/manindex/hp49ggraph24252_eng_man.html
is a 236 page manual for the HP48G. It renders only 7 pages before "MEMORY FULL Close Document?" - and basically dies. Am I doing something wrong?
I have 6.4MB of free memory, but I think that it is running out of the 4MB of reserved Heap.
What should I use to split PDFs (on the clie - not likely).

Thats really weird that you are getting memory errors and i am not (with 1 meg free, more pages). Are you using it on the NZ? Because im using it on a NX.
