Treo 680, how to: Get ring tone on external speaker when using handsfree?

I have got a treo 680, have been using TX some years before that.

But, when I use the original treo handsfree, and plug it in, and the phone rings, the sound only emanates from the ear plug, not the external speaker.

So: How do I use the hands free and get the ring tone out on the normal speaker?

I too would like to know more about what decides where the ringer goes for the 680. With my stereo headset, the phone rings, but not thru the headset. I have to know I've got an incoming call and push the button on my mic. But in the car, using Blutooth, I have it set to auto answer. And there it doesn't ring at all. I hear the voice of someone or the music stops playing. Yet if I call out, I hear the ringer thru the car speakers.

I suspect there must be a preference for handsfree use. But I haven't had time to pursue testing all this.
