View Full Version : Stupid little ear buds

I'm not sure if others have had the same feeling, but after a month of using them I can't stand the little ear buds that came with my NZ. First, the asymmetric wires going to my 2 ears mean that a different tension pulls on each of them, with the consequence that one (the left) tends to fall off more. Moreover, I find the plastic ear buds to be rather uncomfortable (after an hour or so my ears really hurt). The length of the line going into the RC is too short, so that the RC has to be clipped to one's upper body (as opposed to, say one's belt), and makes using the extra stylus on the RC difficult (unless one is quite near sighted).

My solution is to unplug the ear buds from the RC, and use instead a separate pair of SONY ear buds that are quite comfortable (slightly smaller + padding), sound great, have symmetric wiring going to their meeting point, plus a great additional bonus of an extra little volume control thumbwheel (very small), which is great when I quickly need to change the volume without fumbling with the RC to try and remember which buttons change the volume. With this set, I can clip the RC to my belt, tie up the wire from the NZ to the RC, which makes for better organized wiring overall...

You might want to try putting a pair of foam covers on the ear-buds that came with your NZ. The covers will hold the buds inplace better. You won't have to push the buds into your ear as far. And, you won't have to suffer with volume drop. If you use any earphones or earbuds with a rating over 4 ohms you'll lose volume.

your complains are dead on. I had exactly the same problems and came up with the same solution actually. I replaced the headphones with a different pair.

Regarding the asymmetric wire length of the earphone that comes with NZ90, I think they are designed so that you pass the right earbud behind your neck to your right ear and the left stays on the left side of your body. I've been using it this way since I got my nz 5 weeks ago and works great. But I do hear you about the overall length being smaller and the 'extra' stylus on the RC being very short to use comfortably.

Ear buds don't fit my ears, the opening I guess is too small for them :(

Headphone impedance hasn't made much difference in volume and has worked well with headphones as high as 100 ohms. Almost any headphones can be used with the right adapter. The proper impedance is more critical for the intended frequency response. Some headphones can give deeper bass and sharper treble, provided that they fit the ears well.

They are stupid little ear buds, and not for the fit reason. They're the same godawful earbuds that Sony insists on crippling even their best MP3, MD and CD portables with.
Throw them away and get something decent. www.head-fi.org is a great forum for getting recommendations.

I find the stock headphones to be of low sound quality. Any good headphones out there that are as portable as the stock headphones but a lot better sound quality?

I don't like 'em either. They get tangled up and a pain to stick in the ear. I got a standard headset that works great1
