View Full Version : A little treat for you all - FREEWARE skinUI
dmitrygr
04-22-2008, 01:05 AM
SkinUI is now freeware, as a little treat to all you guys. You've supported me and my programming for five years now, and I only hope that you enjoyed this time at least as much as I did. Thanks.
This is a sort of an early farewall post, just a bit ahead of its time. nuRom for LifeDrive is done and will be released soon and SDHC driver for Palms will be my last official project. I will, of course, continue to fix and update old projects, but unless something changes dramatically do not forsee many new ones. I've done all I wanted, and I've had plenty of fun along the way.
why?
i am extremely worn out after this semester, the next few months after i move to Mountain View, CA, i plan to spend every weekend at the pool, reading with my phone by my side - OFF!
Why this app? This app is just the one i am most proud of, it is also the biggest project i undertook under palmos. So i felt like sharing it.
After i rest up a bit, i might be back, though i am not sure. i am joining VMWare fulltime, and plan to get my MBA studying in evenings and weekends. i am not sure how much free time i will have.
Long Live PalmOS!
[skinui download is on palmpowerups.com]
So long, and thanks for all the hacks!

Dmitry,
A nice gesture for your impending goodbye (in terms of new projects, anyway). You have done so much for Palm users.
Will you be adding SDHC support for Treo 755p, or Centro?
You've certainly helped Palm to live longer & better! Thanks!

04-22-2008, 01:58 AM
@technical1: 755p and centro already have it.
@_Em: not yet :-)

Many thanks.

@technical1: yes, but that is another topic. leave this one to skinui please ;-)
Well, thanks a lot Dmitry! :D
Now I don't need to get a new registration code (Sorry if I was the one who send you the last email on top of the sdhc requests which made you snap, go crazy and release it as freeware). I am sure this program will be appreciated by the whole palm user base and might even find its way to factory default devices in the future (and resurrect palm). Do tell us why this is your farewell present and what you are planning next (Microsoft didn't bribe you to stop did they? :) ).
PS: Your OS X skin which can be downloaded from your site does not seem to work on skinUI (corrupt pdb?)

Dmitry,
Let me wish you all the best w/your move, & your work w/VMWare & I will try out SkinUI 2.2 as soon as I pick up my TX - had to send it in for upgrade after my most recent probs.... Will be able to comment on SUI later today... I hope everyone who hasn't til now will enjoy SkinUI.
Good luck w/everything.

hey, great news!
I have a question: is skinUI just an aesthetic improvement, or does it bring along any functional benefits? I seem to recall asking for a minor feature somewhere and Dmitry replying that SkinUI did what I was asking. But I'm not sure what it was, or if it was really skinUi or something else...
EDIT: let me answer my own question - I remembered what it was and was able to find it here (http://www.1src.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1001762&postcount=93).
It seems SkinUI prevents the DIA from popping up for 320x320 dialogs when it's not needed. Never tried it though.
Could there be more of these little improvements?

Could there be more of these little improvements?
The help dialogs now feature a scrollbar.
Alert boxes now can have animated icons.
A new font has been added to the titlebars and buttons to make them more readable.
Sound support. Sounds can be customized for any action.
The commandbar is completeley skinned ...
No more underlying in memos . (screenshot)
Thanks for all the Stuff you made for our Palms, you (and your apps) really made life a lot easier for us. I wish you all the best for the future and I hope, you'll be back soon. Without you and your in-depth knowledge of PalmOS, we're doomed.

I would like to say Thanks for making this great app freeware! I purchased it back in January but will surely spread the word. This one app probably saved me from switching devices. ( lol eye candy I know)
I do have one question about versions though. I am using the last beta 2.1 or something and the freeware is version 2.2. Were there any enhancements between the two or is the version change just to indicate freeware?
I am hoping that there was a fix included to be able to see the text for the "big buttons" feature in mms/missed call/voicemail alerts.
I personally have benefitted from your programs for over 2 years with my first purchase of UDMH to make LJP playable on my Treo 650. I had also purchased warpspeed and skinui. Im sad to hear you wont be continuing to innovate on the old palm OS but Wish you well with your future plans.
Oh also if there is ever a fix for the big buttons effect I'll be anxiously waiting. :D

Very nice of you to give away SkinUI, but I'm wondering if you have my correct address to mail me refund check to... ;) I'll consider the ease of moving the app to replacement TX's enough!
Just don't disappear completely for that very reason. I'm sure I'll be needing new reg codes for the other apps in my PalmPowerups "Suite" as TX's come and go.
Cheers to you! Here's hoping you can't stay away! :D

:D
I installed 2.2 on my Treo 700p, and I can't see the text on voicemail alerts, in fact whenever I made or received a phone call with 'big buttons' enabled, it would crash, but it didn't show up in the crash log.
I like this better than PalmRevolt, and haven't started playing with the sounds yet.

Not surprisingly, it seems to slow down application loading. Do those of you who are experienced with it do anything to deal with that? I turned form effects off, and that helps a lot. Anything else? I expect to forget the slight delay once I become used to it.
Lots more to experiment with. Fun!

Dick,
I've found that it just takes getting used to. You can disable some of the effects or not choose random. Some of the effects render faster than others on my TX, YMMV. But I've used SkinUI since beta testing the .x version and have gotten used a slight slow down, I sit back and enjoy the eyecandy. On some apps in which I am impatient, I check the box to disable it altogether. Also disable SUI for apps that skin themselves, but remember that skinning settings are inherited, so if you disable it for LX then any dialogue that pops up while in LX will not be skinned either. (I do love the animated dialogs :p )

You have to open SkinUI, hit the effects button right in the middle of the screen, then at the bottom right of the effects screen there is a checkbox with the words "Big Buttons". Uncheck that and hit ok. Thats it no more crashes on calls. ;)

The skin i was talking about was Tiger skin for SkinUI, released on my first package (first attemp) to change the PalmOS GUI. You can find it here in the freeware section under the name "Turn2PalmOSX". You will find a series of skins included and skinui is listed.

Sadly, it does not because of PalmRevolts new compression. I have my own uncompressed version, that will import into SkinUI, but crashes when previewed. I think I would have to create a version specifically for SkinUI, and since I don't see myself using PalmOS devices to much longer, that is highly unlikely to happen.

I'm sure this question is old news, but could someone point me in the right direction for creating skins and sound files for SkinUI?
I love Church Punks Vista sounds, but I think it would be SO cool if I could duplicate some of the LCARS sounds from Star Trek. My LD will double as a tricorder! :)

Anyway a little readme or tutorial would be useful. I'm glad with the skins I found over the web, but if I spend time creating new one, I like learning new things, as I'm not a computer engineer. :)

Theres this program called HPSkin studio that makes it easier to create edit skins if your just starting.
Its not free but I bought it somewhere for 5 bucks. just gotta google it. Ive been using it for months to edit bmp's and compile new skins.

Please don't take offense, but do those of you with the "nags" popping up have the Splash Screen enabled in Prefs by chance?
Update: I have been messing with this and see the Informational "SkinUI is freeware! etc" once after a reset. That's not the end of the world, but since I paid for this app (and 3 others from PPU, I sure wish I wasn't subject to this. It would be nice if registered users were excluded from this dialog.
Since the last pay version was fine I am going to drop back to that...

I get the freeware popup everytime I start skinui and the info on what's changed. The what's changed used to come up only the first time after installing a new version. I don't have the splash screen enabled (haven't since I bought it) I'm considering going back to the previous version - 2.1.0.0.
EDIT: Scott missed your edit. I think the big difference is that big buttons are supposed to work better in this version.

Dmitry, I never paid for this program, just downloaded it recently for the first time, and I've had a lot of fun with it over the last few days. I don't find the nag screen obtrusive at all (though if I had paid for it, maybe I'd see things differently.) For those folks in my boat, I don't think we have anything to reasonably complain about. If you're not changing skins and opening the program, you never would see this anyway. The sound effects are extra nice, I never knew that was part of this program. Particularly nicer than that harsh touch-tone-like beep that's standard in Palm OS.
There's one thing I'd like to do and that's colorize one of the skins to have a different color for the text under the icons on the main launcher (it's too close to the color of my background picture). I've gone through the whole process of trying to colorize it on my TX (change color on the palette, give skin a new name, try to "advanced colorize" certain items), but I cannot figure out what individual element needs to be modified, and once the whole process is done, the Palm crashes anyway-- I get message "Window failed to create (Sys0502)" and then it resets. Anyone have luck with colorizing existing skins?

On TX:
A: If you use ClipPro you have to disable all features of SkinUI to make it work again. (thats not really a problem.)
B: If you use SlovoEd V6.07 and whish to popup the resident modul nothing helps, it won't come up, also if you have SlovoEd on the exclude list and "unload Sikin UI" activated.
So far no more problems.

I'll use either.
With MaxX installed, you can drag your stylus or finger from right to left across the top of the screen to hide/show the statusbar. Alex's feature in MyKbd works too, but is a bit more flaky to trigger when SkinUI is installed.
Using this trick in NetFront landscape mode also zooms NF to fullscreen, hiding its own statusbar and moving the scrollbars to 1 pixel lines on the edges of the screen.

I meant MaxX's methods. OS 5.4+changed alot about the OS's API, so what maxX does is it pretty much downgrades the os to 5.2.1 while netfront runs.

Wow, long time since I last came to 1src, and what a big treat! A thank you to you, too, Dmitry!
The Palm scene has became as dull as any other dead platform that I got lazy on checking Palm news now.
IMHO, it's a nice twist for you to get rejected by Palm Inc. and accepted into VMware. VMware is a company with a real future, while Palm, well, maybe very busy putting finishing touches to it's grave.
Good luck!

Dmitry,
First of all many thanks for continuing to innovate P-OS where Palm itself dropped out. I am so disappointed that it was Apple that came with the iphone, where it should have been Palm. They had everything to do it, but failed, and still fail miserably to innovate. But you carried on! Great, and a lot of fun for us to follow.
When I saw your message, I decided to leave my TX for what it is and I just stepped over to the dark side.
So long 1src!
Take care, dmitry!

Sorry to hear that you may be leaving the Palm community as well, Brent. I have appreciated your contributions on Tam's Palm, on Brighthand, and here at 1SRC. I'll take a look at one of the other recommended apps for OpenMoko.

It comes on second launch then from time to time but I can't find any pattern.
Not annoying anyway !
You guys should stop moaning all the time when the software is right there and completely free of charge. How many times do you change your skins a day anyway. Anyway, I am sure VMware is a great place for Dimitry, especially since he appears very specialised in Assembly code and has deep understanding of hardware. Good luck there Dimitry!

How hard would it be to boink an UnCache UI onto this? So that one could attach it to any application you wanted to, not just NF? I'd love to use it to make a few of my applications extra fast (like MaxX does to netfront -- It's a lot faster than my base setup) without overclocking on them.

Someone farther up this thread suggested we quit complaining about the reminder to buy applications at PalmPowerups. I think I've been careful in my reports about them to say that I can live with them and that I am happy to have this application made available freely to the community. It has revitalized my interest in my Palm TX, at least for now.
That said, Dmitry seems to be at least mildly interested in eliminating the reminder after the first use, or he wouldn't have put out a version intended to keep it from returning after every soft reset. If he is still interested in doing so, I now report that the new version does eliminate the reminder when SkinUI is launched for the first time after a soft reset. However, when I launch it a second time after a reset, the reminder reappears. This is a reliable pattern in my hands: Soft reset. Launch SkinUI - no reminder screen. Launch SkinUI a second time - the reminder screen appears. After this second launch, there are no further appearances until the next soft reset.
Because my device is set to perform a soft reset after its nightly backups and because I am still fiddling with finding the skin I like best and trying new options, I am seeing the reminder screen each day. Once I settle down, of course, I won't notice this behavior.
Dmitry, if you are interested in removing this screen after the first time the application is used, perhaps this information will be of use.

It isn't supposed to be in the latest version -- you have to turn it on intentionally.
The other thing to do is use CleanStart to disable all other software and see if the problem persists. If it doesn't, you've got a software conflict you need to fix.

ii might throw a TE2 into the deal :)
If you give me the GBA emu :). No really, I would, but I only have one charger. If you get a charger (ask at tapland?), I'm all over this.
BTW, my extra Zod only works w/ slot 1 (but slot 2 is just missing a spring, if anyone could fix it, it would be you :)).
If you can get a charger, I would LOVE to trade for a TX (E2?)!

Dmitry or any of the skinmakers out there.
Is there a txt file somewhere about what all the bmps are? I mean some are easy to figure out by looking at the picture and the letters. Say "TL" means top left but theres some that I cant decipher either by looking at the picture or the abbreviations even when looking back at the rcp file.
Its not everything but there are some that are kinda hard to figure it out.

Like which file do you edit to change the top section color (usually white) next to the tab?

When I install the SkinUI with LauncherX, I receive a soft reset about 1-2 seconds after an incoming call arrives. I see something on the LauncherX forums about the LaucherX header not being handled exactly right.
I use a Treo 680 with latest versions of LauncherX and had the latest SkinUI.
Is there a solution other than removing LauncherX?

If you do that every app you launch from LX, which is after all a launcher, will not be skinned as skinning is inherited. I use LX and skinui on my TX and the only real problem is that LX doesn't redraw correctly. It takes about 2-3 seconds longer than it should so a tab appears in the upper left hand corner. the following screenshot which is over a year old illustrates the problem:

I have plenty of screenshots of my palm if you want me to post a more current one. LauncherX does everything I want a launcher to do with a much smaller footprint than Zlauncher has. ZL has a steeper learning curve as well, where you can virtually use LX "out-of-the-box". Granted that LX hasn't been updated in a while (understatement) and doesn't have iconsets like ZL. Also you can't set backgrounds like you can in ZL (one of the most requested upgrades to LX). Still I've tried virtually every launcher that works on a TX and I like LX the best. The user community at www.launcherxplanet.com is really great and superbly helpful (some of the LX support people admin this unofficial site). Launchers in the end are a matter of personal preference. You really have to trial each one to get a feeling for it and then make a decision.

Im trying to use the skinmaker program to make something with animations but I need help in how to choose colors.
This in an example from the rcp file:
//values of 0x31 0x33 0x33 0x37 mean let system decide this color
0x00 0xCC 0xCC 0xCC //UIMenuFrame --command bar border color
0x00 0xFF 0xFF 0xFF //UIMenuFill --menu unselected background
0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 //UIMenuForeground --menu unselected text
0x00 0x00 0x99 0xFF //UIMenuSelectedFill --menu selected background
0x00 0xFF 0xFF 0xFF //UIMenuSelectedForeground --menu selected text
0x00 0xFF 0xFF 0xFF //UIFieldBackground --field background, should be same as form background
0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 //UIFieldText --field lines
Now what do these "0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00" and the like mean? How do I choose a color? I am used to the hue/sat or red/green/blue method of choosing a color.
Can anyone break this down for me or point me in the right direction on how to figure this out?

go here: http://www.free-color-picker.com/scripts/fcp302.html?ifn=input_6a&sam=colsel
move mouse over color you want
on top left it will say something like #234567
the 6 numbers after the # are the color. break them down into groups of 2 chars, so for this example it will be: 23 45 67, then put them in skinui format by adding a 00 up front: now you have 00 23 45 67
now just add 0x in front of each group
so for that color we get 0x00 0x23 0x45 0x67
there is also a special value 0x31 0x33 0x33 0x37, if you put this for color, it means "system decides color"

With that being said I hope someone can help me with a problem I am having with installing SkinUI. After downloading and installing SkinUI I open the program for the first time and it runs me through the tips and then where I can import skins. After that when I hit exit it resets my phone. Each time after that when I try to open the app it resets my phone. It doesn't matter how many times I make an attempt it resets. I have uninstalled and reinstalled and the same result happens.
I hope I said that right as I have uninstalled it again.

I know you probably don't want to hear this, but ...
Try a warm reset and then install skinui
then reset and see what happens
If you still get resets, do a full backup and then do a hardreset
install skinui
If it works now, you most probably have a non-compliant app on your phone.
After you have restored your device, try downloading tealscan and see if it can detect any problems. Also a freeware app called PalmInternals is a great way to find out if there is a rogue app on your device. Install and run PI. Let it do a scan, if it resets near the end of the scan or resets when you tap "Notif" after the scan, you most likely have a bad app.
Instead of doing a hard reset and starting from scratch, you can use cleanstart to eliminate possible culprits without uninstalling them (at least this is a good way to start). Get Cleanstart in the freeware section.

Ok, the hard reset and just a hotsync without full restore using NVBackup worked so far. But, since I didn't do full restore should I try full restore now and then try installing again. If it does it again I will know it is something I had in my phone prior to the hard reset that was causing it.

Yes do a full restore and see what happens.
Like I said if you are still getting resets install CleanStart and use the builtin only settings (I think it is called something like that) then do a reset and reinstall skinui. If that works start adding apps to your cleanstart profile 3 at a time. Reset after adding each set of apps and test skinui. When you start to get resets again eliminate the last 3 apps you added one at a time doing a reset after each elimination then a test with skinui. When you stop getting resets on the Skinui test, the last app you eliminated is the LIKELY culprit.
Notice I say likely. this is because there could be a conflict between 2 apps and the one you eliminate is the one that is bringing out the problem with another app. There is no good way to find this out, unless PalmInternals is still crashing on you in which case you may be able to isolate in a similar way to above. I had this happen with Dynaclock by Dmitry Grinberg. I never did find out what the other app was, although I suspect it had something to do with crash pro.

Unfortunately, I'm using a different version of versamail (TX). Although, I have had virtually no difficulty with skinui when it comes to versamail.
What you can do is add it to the exclude list in skinui. There are a couple of apps you should exclude. My exclude list is as follows (of course, if you don't have the app - don't bother):
OffFlush 2.0
OnTimeRx
PalmPDF
Prefs (dmitry's version)
Tealscan
Uncache
Web (blazer)
Remember that any app that is excluded gives that exclusion to child apps. So don't exclude your launcher, or everything will be excluded.

Your welcome. It sounds like the builtin launcher - if that is what treolauncher is - may not let apps launched from it inherit its skinning properties. I use a third party launcher (LauncherX) and when I exclude it, everything I launch from it is unskinned. This also happens with alerts. If I happen to be in an app that is excluded in skinui and an alert pops up, then the alert is also unskinned.

javaerb, to get a better understanding of how skin colors are assigned to, I
suggest you download the Cobalt Skin resource from the link posted by phreakonaleash.
Normal List and Popup List background colors are not assigned by bitmap, but by a color setting. I don't know what you're doing wrong.
These are the settings in the rcp file of the skin source.
UIObjectFill
Assigns the color of background for lists (both normal and popup)
UIObjectForeground
Color of text in lists.
UIObjectSelectedFill
Color of highlight when you highlight text in lists.
UIObjectSelectedForeground
Color of text when you highlight text in lists.
AFAIK, you cannot make colors set by the rcp file transparent (in case, that was what you were doing).

I've been waiting for somebody to post about this! This is indeed the absolute strangest happening I've seen on Palm period. For me it even kept crashing on start even after a hard reset with nothing installed at all but SkinUI.
At first (at that point) I thought it was a corruption on the SD card, so I tried removing the skinui directory... nothing. Tried removing the card completely... nothing. Tried a different card... nothing. Then tried sending it to a different device (my 650)... and IT was crashing. Finally sent it to my Centro (which is never used) and finally got it to work. So I thought could it actually be a problem that needs a zero-out reset not just a hard reset, no matter how little cents it seemed to make. So I decided to try it... except I accidentally didn't do a full zero-out reset (just did the hold sync button and press reset parts - a simple seemingly pointless bootloader reset)... soft reset out of it... and the bloody thing worked.
It gets wIErder tho, because after restoring from my backup, the problem started up again, even when I uninstalled and reinstalled SkinUI... so I launched the dumb bootloader mode again... and AGAIN IT WORKED.
Note that I have absolutely NO idea why this happened nor why such a seemingly stoopid solution worked (and I've used it constantly without any crashes since then - I even tried to force crashes to see if something would happen)... I just kno that now I'm not the only one to have seen this happen... and that I found a fix - the wIErdest one EVER - that worked (for me).

Doubt that - like I said, when trying to work it out the only device that actually DID work (originally) was the Centro.
N e ideas what could cause something like this to happen tho? Card directory/preference corruption? Like I said, even uninstalling SkinUI completely (with uninstall manager) didn't work - and neither did a hard reset and fresh install (via direct download, to be sure it was not a corrupt backup file or something). I mean like I said, this was definitely the strangest crash occurrence into which I've ever run period on any palm... and the "solution" was even wIErder.

Actually, and strangely enough... SkinUI started doing the same thing on my LD after several months of flawless operation.

Upon further squinting, the Palm screen briefly displays "Loading SkinUI" in the top-left corner of the screen before resetting. We're talking about 1/4 of a second or so.
Glad to hear that I'm not the only one...

Like JJJ said, I too had been using SkinUI for ages without n e problems at all, until about 3 weeks ago when this happened out of nowhere (only thing I had done was switch skins a few days before and then put a new skin in the SkinUI folder that I wanted to try, but when I went to open it to try it, bang).
So try what I tried I guess - can't hurt: 1) Completely uninstall SkinUI & installed skins (using an uninstall tool if you have one like DestallerLite (mytreo.net/downloads/search.html?search=destallerlite), although the launcher delete on the Centro does the basic same thing); 2) Remove your SD card; 3) Launch Bootloader and Soft Reset; 4) Reinstall a clean download of SkinUI (without reinserting your card yet); 5) Try to run it - if successful, reinsert your card BEFORE exiting SkinUI, then restore your backup
Hope it works... and hope somebody can possibly figure out how this is actually happening

NEVER ever use any uninstaller apps on my applications
you will do yourself a great disservice.
there is no good deinstaler apps on palm. NONE, ZERO, ZILCH, NADA, ...
there are bad ones and very bad ones.

Tempted to ask: why

1. None of them intercept system calls so they only guess what changes apps made
2. App2 installed after app1 might made made changes to same things, and deleting app1 will remove app2's changes as well
3. I said so. If you find anyone who knows the OS any better who says otherwise, tell me.

For kicks, I did a hard reset and then tried SkinUI on a totally clean Verizon Centro.
I got the exact same problem. Another data point.

Was only a question.
To note, DestallerLite, being the uninstaller I mentioned as a suggestion, does no monitoring at all - it merely deletes related prefs & DBs based on creatorID - the built-in handango launcher does this now, but previous versions did not (only the primary resource container/compiler would be deleted).
I will agree without question with you that Palm uninstallers are imperfect at best... but show me any "perfect" uninstaller - on N E platform. It is definitely a fact that without an uninstaller, many apps will leave traces (and in many cases large traces) in RAM that at minimum would decrease available RAM space. While this may definitely not be the case for your apps, it is also without question that if used properly (i.e. if someone knows what s/he is doing with it, thus being able to recognize an App1 over App2 scenario), an uninstaller - even a Palm one (like UninstallManager, by which I definitely do stand, particularly since it prompts the user whenever it may be deleting an improper file) - can be beneficial for apps to which such does apply.
Granted, one could argue that "if one knows how to recognize such differences, s/he could most likely just delete leftover things manually"... but then isn't that the point

Oh; and I'll add that I agree with you on #3. You def do seem to have more command on PalmOS than n e (of the many) developers I've seen
