The Clie doesn't support CF modems. The only device it supports is the Sony Wi-Fi card. With the EruWare 3rd party CF drivers it will also support CF memory cards.

But no one has written drivers for the Clie and OS5 to handle modems AFAIK. Where did you get those drivers? Are they for an PalmOS3/4 device, like the TRGPro or HE330?

Others have posted about this - try searching just the NZ90 form for 'modem' and/or 'ambicom'.

CF Modem Installation Instructions
Hello all,

I have been requested by our favorite Brazilian, Pelaca, to put together a step by step instruction set on getting a CF modem to properly function in an NX. Here goes.....

1. Obtain an NX (preferably via legal means)

2. Obtain a compatible modem. I use the AmbiCom which I purchased at Best Buy (click here)

3. Install the attached files contained on the two following posts. The first file (cfutils.zip) contains the Japanese version of the modem drivers. The second file (cfutilityen.zip) contains the modified English language file that Pelaca has spent many hours on.

4. After installation, perform a Soft Reset of your NX by pressing the small button on the back of your unit.

5. Locate and execute the new program "CF Utility" in your launcher (hint: the icon has a picture of a hammer & screwdriver)

6. Insert your new modem into the CF slot on your device. The screen should read:

Brand: CF
Product: 56K Modem JATE

7. Return to your launcher and run your system PREFS utility. Select "Network" in the dropdown menu (upper right).

8. Within Network Preferences tap the dropdown menu next to Service and select the top entry (AT&T). Next, tap the dropdown menu next to Connection and select "Edit Connections".

9. Within "Available Connections" select "New"

10. Within "Edit Connection" replace the name "Custom" with the name of your modem (i.e. AmbiCom, or maybe Pete). Set "Connect to:" to "Modem". Set "Via" to the top setting of "Analog Modem (gibberish)". Tap "Ok" then tap "Done"

11. Now you are back at the "Network Preferences" screen. Replace the service name to your ISP name. Enter your ISP info under "User Name", "Password" & "Phone #". Under the "Connection" setting, select the modem name you entered in step 10 (should be the bottom choice).

12. Connect telephone line (analog) and tap "Connect"

Simple eh?

From: Pelaca
You have to install... the "CFUtilityen.prc" then the "CFNULLinf.prc", "CFmodeminf.prc" and "CFmodemvdrv.prc"...
In the "cfutilityen.zip" you can found the needed files...
The TDK, KAGA, Billionton are supported by Sony but the Princeton and Ambicom works too...
I'm working on the Xircom now with no success for now...

thanks again. so you don't need any palm software, right? (other than the ambicom drivers and browser).

No palm software just the AmbiCom cfmodem and i down loaded all of the drivers on the page, someone said you only needed four of them but it would not work for me.The free internet providers encrypt their username and your password, what you type in is not the true ID'S.You have to down load a program to see what they truly are,and then they well still shut you down after awhile.Just pay and be done is my suggestion, let me know if i can help any more.

seems like i get disconnted easily using highstream. how quickly do you connect? do you connect before or after opening netfront?

I Have not used enough it to give you an educated answer yet.But from what I have seen so far it works fine, but if you are having problems you have 2 weeks to cancel your service at no charge.

I don't know what's wrong. I downloaded the 2 week free trial for Highstream, and followed all the instructions. Followed all the Ambicom procedures. I did successfully send a fax, so I know the modem is working. I have 80211b at home, and do use Netfront.

But I somehow cannot connect via the CF modem. The typical error is PPP timeout or Idle timeout.

Any ideas? (and thanks!)

Mine wouldn't work until I set it the script to :

Wait for prompt
Send User ID
Send CR
Send Password
Send CR
End

After I did this, while it is connecting, it asks me for my username, and then my password. I didn't put anything in the dialog boxes but just clicked "ok". Now, everything works fine when I do that.

what do you enter in the prompt? are the prompts for user name and password?

clieman88

At the "wait for prompt" with the blank line beside it, I didn't put anything in it. If you're talking about the "User ID" box and "password" box (the ones that have 2 squares and then the word "login" or "password") that come up while it is connecting, just click "ok".

Just make sure that everything is set up on the "network" page in preferences. (where you enter all of the things you got from your ISP like username and password).

If your email is 555555@highstream.net, your username would be 555555

I'm using a local ISP

Make sure that you have done the following things:

In preferences, go to connections
Click on Standard Modem
Click Edit

Make sure it says:

Name: Standard Modem
Via: Analog Modem
Dialing: TouchTone
Volume: (Medium)

If this doesn't help, I don't know what else could be wrong.
