Description:

BeamPRO is a powerful solution for sending multiple Palm files, Address contacts, Memos, and Datebook appointments from one Palm device to another using the infrared beaming or Bluetooth capability of the Palm.

The built-in Palm beaming function only allows the beaming of regular programs. BeamPRO allows you to beam any type of Palm file, such as a data file, e-book, or HackMaster hack. It also allows you to send multiple files in one beaming operation. Another unique feature of BeamPRO is that there is no need for BeamPRO to be on both handheld units! Immediate beaming is possible to any other handheld device.

BeamPRO also allows for the beaming of multiple entries from your Palm Address Book, Memo and Datebook databases.

If you have an expansion card, BeamPRO will allow card-based databases to be included in the transfer.

The interfaces allows the beaming of multiple databases, addresses, memo, and Datebook appointments in a single beaming transfer.

As an added feature, BeamPRO can be used to view and delete Palm files which do not show up in the Palm's built-in deletion screen.

Installing BeamPRO:

Install BeamPRO as you would a regular Palm program. You should refer to your Palm User's Guide for information on installing Palm programs.

Using BeamPRO:

BEAMING:

Before beaming, ensure that the receiving Palm's "Beam Receive" option is turned on in the Palm's "Prefs" program. To access this setting, open the program called "Prefs", and use the top-right pop-up menu to choose "General". The "Beam Receive" option is located at the bottom of the screen.

If you intend to beam Addres records, you should ensure that the receive Palm device's Address program is not active. Likewise, if you intend to beam Datebook records, you should ensure that the receiving Palm device's Datebook program is not active.

BeamPRO's main screen provides three tabs of beaming choices. The first tab is a list of all databases present on your device's main memory and expansion cards. (All programs and data are referred to as databases.) Items with a padlock indicator are copy-protected and cannot be beamed. An expansion card icon will indicate databases stored on a expansion card. A computer-chip icon will indicate a ROM-based, Flash memory-based, or read-only database.

The other tabs allow for access to all Memo, Datebook and Address records.

The category selector can used to show only a specific type of database, distinguished by Palm OS database "type". For example, you may view all executable PRC programs, all hack modules, all E-Books/Doc Files or all Palm VII PQA modules.

As an added feature, the "Name Filter" category allows you to view all databases containing a particular word, phrase, or series of letter. The "Type Filter" category allows you to view one Palm file type. The "Creator ID Filter" category will filter by application creator ID. The "Selected" category displays all databases that have been selected for transfer. "Last Beamed" shows the items that were last beamed. If an expansion card is present, there will be a category to show only those items located on the card.

The "Favorites" category is a customizable category for your most frequently beamed items. You can add to the category by selecting items and choosing "Add To Favorites" from the dropdown menu. To remove favorites, choose the "Favorites" category, select items, and choose "Remove From Favorites".

Items in the database list and address list can be found quickly by entering the first letter of the desired entry using graffiti.

Choose items to beam by tapping list items to place checkboxes in the left-hand column. The size of each database in kilobytes is listed to the right of the name. As you choose items, BeamPRO will indicate how much data can be beamed in one beaming operation, based on Palm's available memory. When the Beam Buffer reaches 100%, you have reached your maximum.

As items are selected, the tab labels will indicate the number of items selected. "Select All" and "Deselect All" are available in the dropdown menus. "Select All" will select all databases in the current tab/category. "Deselect All" will deselect all databases in all categories for the current tab.

If the device is BlueTooth enabled, a popup list will allow for choosing between infrared and bluetooth transfer. The last used Bluetooth destination will also show up in this list.

To initiate the transfer, line up the infrared ports on the two Palms and tap "Beam" to send the items. All selected database files, addresses and appointment records will be transfered. After the transfer is complete, the receiving Palm device will install each of the selected items, and may consult the user if database files with the same name already exist. Address category information will be preserved on the receiving Palm device.

DELETING:

To delete databases, mark the databases with checkboxes and tap the "Delete" button. Use caution when deleting databases that you do not recognize. The Palm uses many hidden files which may contain important information.

Before deleting large amounts of files, the "Selected Items" category can be used to ensure that only the intended files are selected.

Datebook and Address records cannot be deleted with BeamPRO.

PREFERENCES:

The "Preferences" panel is accessed from the dropdown menu, and lets you configure the following three options:

1) You may choose to show ROM databases in the list by choosing "Show ROM Databases" from the "Options" dropdown menu. These databases will appear with a computer chip icon, and cannot be deleted, because they exist in read-only memory. The option must be activated to show items in flash memory.

2) You may choose whether or not to preserve the category of beamed Memo and Address records.

3) You may choose whether BeamPRO automatically prevents duplicate Address and Datebook records from being added to the receiving Palm device.

Compatibility/System Requirements:

BeamPRO is compatible with Palm OS 3.0 or later. This includes Palm OS 5. (Earlier models do not have an infrared port or Bluetooth support, so this shouldn't be an issue.)

BeamPRO is incompatible with !pZip v1.1. This conflict may be corrected in later versions of !pZip.
