View Full Version : Digitizer drift --common?

A year ago I went through several Palm authorized repairs for digitizer drift (digitizer recognizes a tap that's not where I'm really tapping, and the PREFS/TOUCHSCREEN adjustment doesn't fix it) in my then-new TX. Eventually I got them to take it back and refund my money. I stayed with my Zire 71 for another year. When that broke completely, I bought another TX. I've had that TX for a few weeks and it's now started to get digitizer drift too.
1) Is digitizer drift especially common with the TX? Do others have this same experience?
2) I know about PowerDigi, and may well try it. But I want to know if this drift thing is a freak occurrence, meaning I should try to get a replacement unit, or if it's so common that I should just hope that PowerDigi can fix it, or else give up on the TX.
Any thoughts on this topic will be appreciated -- thanks.

From my experience (with three TX's) digitizer drift is going to happen sooner or later. It took about one-two months each time for me. The only solution that has worked has been to go with a glass digitizer. I've had a glass one for about eight months and absolutely zero digitizer drift since. I don't use any special calibration tool like powerDIGI with the glass one--it is just so much better.

Where did you get a glass digitizer, and about how much did it cost?

I've heard that the glass digitizer is a better solution than using Powerdigi, but I've been using PowerDigi since it came out and it makes my digitizer work correctly. The cost is a lot less also, but YMMV. If I had the money right now I'd get a glass digi.

I've been a long time proponent of PowerDigi (and still am), but I'm ready for a glass digitizer. I just can't get aligned at the bottom of my screen anymore. With the introduction of Apt (http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?t=142232&page=1&pp=15), I've been using a lot of Taps & Strokes that require a lot of accuracy. I hope they are back in stock in the various "usual places"...

Fortunately, My TX is working perfectly without digitizer drift. It has 2 years and a half and I used a lot every day. (Knocking on wood...

Regards,
Keep knocking. :) So many of the TXs out there seem to have drift, everyone wants to know where you got yours? :D

I have had absolutely no drift with my T|X. The first had some crazy drift (and eventually a dead spot) but powerdigi fixed the former of those two problems. :D <knock on weed>
I got mine from Palm as a refurb unit :) It's been going strong with minimal drift for over a year and a half now. I HAVE noticed that the drift I've had seems to be software-triggered -- with my core set of apps I have no drift, but when I use a few others, the drift seems to start.
Maybe the drift issue is only partly a hardware thing, and is also partly OS/third party related (strange as that sounds)....
Is it possible that some apps could be inadvertently messing with the calibration settings?

5 TX's owned. 5 TX's had Digitizer drift, 2 had deadspots

I only remember you having three?
Oh well, I like my T|X currently: Stable as hell and really nicely running KDE.

I had two more before I joined 1src ;)
TX (Digitizer Drift)-> TX (Digitzer Drift)-> TX (Endless Reset loop, but was also getting Digitzer Drift)-> TX (Dead Spot, but also had Digitzer Drift)-> TX (Current, but is suffering from a horrible Dead Spot and Digitizer Drift).

Hmm... that means with this KDE4 variant (http://polishlinux.org/kde/kde-4-rev-790000-better-stability-and-performance), you could run OS X apps on your TX :)

Mine had terrible drift problems until I replace the digitizer with a glass one. No software fix worked at all for me.
That's the primary reason I won't buy another TX after this one dies. I'm not spending $299 + another glass digitizer.
When this dies I'm getting a phone of some sort.

PowerDigi worked until recently for me. I'm seeing a dead spot on my digi that is not fixed by PD and the real problem is it is right in the middle of my mykbd input area. Needless to say I'm saving up for a glass digi.

Is it possible that some apps could be inadvertently messing with the calibration settings?I get that feeling at times. Certain apps are absolutely maddening when trying to write and tap. Note Studio and ThoughtMgr are the worst, and of course, the two apps that I do the most input to.
A strange problem I've had starting a few days ago is great difficulty trying to get CAPs using the crossover method. Whether it's apps or not I still want to go glass.

All these replies have persuaded me to consider a glass digitizer. But I still don't know where to look for them. I can Google for them, for sure, but do other 1src members have recommendations based on experience? And does anyone remember the cost, even roughly?

Many people here at 1src have used Chris Short
I just had Chris s\Short replace my TX digitizer with a glass one. His service is excellent and very fast. Try this email:
ips DO NOT COPY THIS at chartermi NOT THIS EITHER dot net (replace at and dot with appropriate punctuation and delete spaces)
I cannot speak from first hand experience though.

Well at the moment im building against arm-linux and the hackndev kernel so I can't really run the x86 stuff quite yet. :) I'll post a guide and a rootfs in a few days. Im still trying to get the wlan 8083 drivers working with Dmitry's help.... :)

I used Chris Short to replace my digitizer. Service was fantastic!
My TX has had the following:
1 original digitizer - Digitizer drift (fixed with Powerdigi :D ) then Deadspot  (powerdigi wouldnt work anymore :( )
1 Glass digitizerer (Pdaparts.com) - Perfect (survived over 50 6ft drops) then It shattered after a 3ft drop (ironic eh? )
1 PlasticDigitizer/LCD replacement combo (PDASmart.com) - manufacuture defect - started to have "temporary" digitizer drifts frequently at random times (digitizer was sticking somtimes after taps) - currently being excanged
1 Glass digitizer (PDASmart.com) - current digitizer and working well :D (knock on 1src :D )

Thanks cms. Not encouraging, I'm afraid.
Dont worry about me, *theres a joke about me using a hammer for a stylus :D *, its just bad luck on my part.
I would suggest to get a Digitizer by www.PDASmart.com it should be glass if your interested :D
Its actualy quite easy to replace manualy :D

Has the status changed or does nobody (Chris, Shawn, etc) have the Glass Digitizers available?

I saw that PDA Parts had them IF you buy the whole assembly LCD and touch screen.

Thanks. I think I saw that (IPaq screen?). I'll hold for only what I need unless I knew the whole deal would offer a crisper/brighter display.

I just heard from Chris today that he won't have glass digitizers for another couple of weeks. He does have new OEM plastic digitizers.

Question:
Is the digitizer the outer most surface of the Tx screen?
If yes, are glass digitizers more scratch resistant as in no need for screen protectors?

The glass portion is not the very top, no
it goes: plastic - non conductive gel - glass (from outside to in)
The point of the inside layer being glass is that it doesn't deform like an OEM one.

Well, if this one dies, you could still buy a new one and transplant the good glass digitizes from this dead one. ;)
