Do I need a special memory stick to download MP3 music for the SJ33, I am new to the MP3 wolrd of PDA's, Can I use, lets say the Lexar 128 MB purple MS, (how much misic does it hold) or do I have spend more money to buy the Sony brand white Memory stick.
Is the transfer to the MP3, a straight forward application ?
your thought please
Thanks in advance
Lexar MS is fine as is Sandisk. The white Sony MS is only if you are playing ATRAC (not MP3) files.
Connect the sj33 to the cable and use MSImport to load music to the stick.
I have 19 tracks of music that play for a total of 89 minutes and they take up 84 MB of the 128MB MS. The MP3s are encoded at 128kbps at 44.1kHz (a couple at 192kbps). This is roughly 1MB/minute of music.
If you drop the quality, you can, of course, store more music.
Yes the white stick can play ATRAC3 and do all of what the purple stick can, including MP3. However, it also comes with additional annoying copy right notes that bug you once in a while.
Although the purple one cannot play the ATRAC3, it doesn't bug you the annoying copy right note either. That suits me just fine, especially the price.
I can fit almost 3 hours (176 minutes) MP3s in 128MB at 96 kbps and my ears can't tell any sound quality difference between them and the ones from CD. Unfortunately if I rip the MP3s from CD at lower bitrate (less than 96 kbps), the Clie would not be able to play the MP3s. My guess is this is Real jukebox (included in the Clie Installation CD-ROM) limitation. Otherwise I would pack more music times to the stick. But since it's free and works just fine at 96 kbps, I won't bother to find a better jukebox. 176 minutes (42 tracks) of MP3s are long enough for me. That is usually how long for me to do the yard work in the weekend anyway.

You can use any type of Memory stick for MP3s, but the MagicGate one uses ATRACs.

After installing MSExport from your Clie CD, with the Clie in the cradle, run MSImport on the Clie (oh, and make sure a memory stick is in). You can now use the Clie as an external drive, and drag/drop to the Palm-->Programs-->MSAUDIO folder as you like.
Unfortunately if I rip the MP3s from CD at lower bitrate (less than 96 kbps), the Clie would not be able to play the MP3s.
If you use a program called dbPowerAmp (there are others out there, as well..."Lame", I think is one), you can convert your high-bitrate MP3s to a lower bitrate while preserving the 44.1khz sampling frequency, which is what is necessary for AudioPlayer. The problem you're having is that with the program that you use now (let me guess...MusicMatch, right?), once you go below 96kbps, it lowers the sampling frequency.
Good luck!
