I'm sorry I bought the NZ 90. Its too big to carry on a belt, and I cant seem to connect to my Nokia 3650, since Sony wont support it or even try. The internal memory isnt adequate for an 800 Pda, and that darn cradle is a pain. I can hot sync via bluetooth, but that took 3 phone calls and several techs to accomplish. I also need to change com ports when i want to sync the nokia with the computer.
I might try a pocket pc, since the professional program I use is now available for it. (I use epocrates rx as i am a pharmacist).
Two questions, cause you guys seem to know your stuff.

If I go with another Palm OS, non Sony, can I hot synch on the same computer as the nz 90 or ami I in for more headaches?

Second , If I go with an Ipaq wil using that on the same machine give me trouble. I appreciate any ideas from you guys!!!

An ipaq shouldn't give you any trouble, but you would require activesync, which i've heard is slightly buggy (i've also heard it's better than hotsync in that it's always active, but doesn't do as good a job backing up, all from reading tho)

I think another PalmOS should work, but different makers do modify software, so can't be definative.

using other PalmOS devices would be fine, even though each version of the palm desktop says like "sony" on it or something, its all essentially the same software. Each brand just slaps a new logo on it.
I went from having a Palm V to a Sony t665 to the NX, and i've just hot sync-ed each time, making sure it was for the same user. haven't had any problems yet.
Hope this clarifies it for you.

Bobbyboy,

I, too, had a lot of problems getting my nz90 to sync with my desktop. I discovered that it was caused by the Nokia PC Suite! When I removed that software, my bluetooth hotsync worked fine. I have a 3650, too, but have had no problems connecting that with my nz90 for t-mobile gprs.

Jettie, I also have a 3650 and I had nothing but trouble until I removed Nokia PC Suite.

Very true, Jag. I figured I really didn't need to sync up my 3650 with my desktop. For me, most of my appointments and contacts are on my NZ90. So, I decided to remove the Nokia PC Suite.

Tungstens are made of plastic! And the screen is too small.

05-13-2003, 01:47 PM
-also Tungstens don't have built in mp3 player and no stereo and no camera and no built in remote control, and no video, and no ability to show your photos over the TV, and no 320x480 screen, and no built in blue tooth, etc, etc, etc..

bobby boy, a word of advice... PPC's crash more often and generally run slower than palm... at least this has been my experience.

Like a couple of others, I became disappointed with the NZ90. After the flash of all of its impressive features wear off, I started to notice that the NZ90 carries too much bulk and doesn't do what I need a PDA to do. I wish I had followed my initial instinct about this device.

Thankfully, I found another Palm that does what I want and made the transition away from Sony easy and painless - - but what an expensive lesson this has been. The Tungsten C installed all of my Clie applications automatically without any loss of data! The built-in WiFi is incredibly efficient; I did not have to do anything, it found my network and connected with one tap. I have 44 MB of free memory (without a single card inserted), and most importantly, I can use my external keyboard, download powerpoint presentations using Margi, and slip the Tungsten into my pocket.

Gotta go, I've got a brick to sell.

I've been thinking about upgrading my T to the C, but I just love the small shell design of the T. But the C really does have some impressive specs.

I think people forget what the palm was meant to do, Sure I can listen to mp3's and view photos on my tungsten, but 95% of the time I use it for my contacts and date book and to read my ebooks or look up a word in the reference sections. The mp3 players and cameras took away too much battery time for me so I stopped using them. Now I use my cybershot and when I need to, I will download songs on to my tungsten, but that is rare.

Any Comments about the Zire 71??? Dont think it has bluetooth but as an everyday basic PDA??

the zire 71 probably would be a great everyday PDA.

This might sound funny, but have you tryed the TG50? I know I'm being biased :p. It's almost as light as the T-Series, carries a lot of the NZ90 specs (which ain't the brick quality, thank god. If you want a non-clamshell OS5 Clie, the TG50 is the only way to go, literally. Not all sonys are bricks, just the clamshells pretty much. If you wanna stick with sony and don't want the bigness :p of a clamshell... just get the TG50.

Please all of you Palm lovers go to your own forum and bash the NZ-90. I love it, and for your information a BRICK weighs 6lbs. and is 2-1/2" thick by 4" (W) x 8" (L). Now go and enjoy your party toys while I enjoy my extreme Tech Toy.

Hmm...I'm not really affected by all these bashing going on... :). I'm happy with my NZ90 and that's all there is to it. I'm a former Palm M5X5, Ipaq and XDA user and none of those beat my NZ90! As what others have said, if you're bothered by the size go look elsewhere. Just like with anything, to each his own.

Yeh. Well after having a NX70 and then a T665 and looking really hard at the NZ90, I left the Palm camp about 2 months ago and bought an iPAQ 5450 with removable battery, inbuilt bluetooth and Wireless - sounded great. However PocketPC2002 is the biggest load of rubbish I have ever come across. It is unstable, bug ridden, needs a soft reset twice a day. And lets not talk about Active Stink, it is a load of rubbish as well, as most PPC users will admit. The 5450 WiFi implementation is also bug ridden and causes the device to crash regularly as well as absolutely eating battery. Now it has taken to doing random hard resets - the unit locks up, you go to do a soft reset and VOILA - it just hard resets itself.

Caffeine Kid, why are you here preaching about your T | T? Scamper off and find an equivalent Palm-only forum. <does "waving off peasant" hand motion>

I own an NZ90 and you won't hear me complaining about the memory or form factor. However, you will hear me complain about Sony's lack of support. I HATE that developers can't properly make apps for my PDA.

Good luck going with Pocket PC. I had the toshiba e740 (highly recommended on CNET - still don't know why) and I gave up and switch back to Palm after a month of constant frustration. I lost my data TWICE in the process. (even though I backed it up to a CF card, i could not fully restore it...)

so... yeah good luck with Pocket PC :)

I'm not going the pocket PC route, thanks for the advice everyone!! I might look at the Tungsten C but why patronize Sont again after i spent 800 bananas on a disappointing product. The bluetooth may be the deciding factor, but im leaning to the Zire 71 for a work PDA. Maybe I should go back to pen and paper LOL. Hey from this thread I guess size does matter, and bigger isnt always better!!!

The NX is pretty slim and you can get one for under $320 used on eBay. I got mine for 350 with 2x128mb memory sticks.

Exactly! I like sony products, generally, but the only way a company like that will improve the way they support their line of PDAs is to show them you will buy something else. It just so happens that Palm's newest line is quite impressive. No one makes a better looking PDA than Sony does right now, but Palm designed their newest line (E.G., TUGNSTEN C) so despite the fact that the PDA is cutting edge, it is also compatible and supportable with the products from third-party developers.

I think the only reason why Sony manages to release a new model every 3 months or so is that they cram all they can in a nice box, and leave two weeks to their programmers to make it work. CLIEs have always impressive specs on the paper, and when you open the box, you got half finished software, bridled ports, and an overall unfinished impression. I remember my anger when I discovered that the NR standard softs didn't support HiRes+. You'd think it would get better, but each time it's the same hell. NX can't play normal mpegs, CLIE RMC isn't customisable, CLIE FIles is ridiculous, the Flash PLayer plays what it wants to (though it's macromedia I should blame); and you got gadget softs like Photo Editor with it's stamp function, etc...

I like my NX, but I'm sure they can do better (and no, it's not the NZ) and equally sure they won't because it takes much more time and money to make an intelligent soft than to cram those electronic pieces in an otherwise pretty box. sigh

I repeat : If Palm releases a Hires+ device, with Mp3 playing, I'll jump on it. AT LEAST IT'LL SUPPORT MACs. Sony is losing money in Japan, maybe they should rethink the way they make things (PDAs amount for nothing in their business, I know, but it'd be a start)

> I own an NZ90 ... Sony's lack of support. I HATE
> that developers can't properly make apps for my PDA.

No kidding. I got the NZ thinking it would be the greatest thing since sliced bread. But, I quickly discovered that 40% of the applications that I've been happily using on my N760C can't run on the NZ90.

My biggest loss is AppForge. I have used AppForge to write several big programs over the last few years and now the booster doesn't support OS5. In fact, the need to have these programs run faster was a big reason for my move to the NZ90. Surprise!

And then there's the loss of all my hacks. Yeah, I've tried TealMaster, but it's looking like most hacks still can't run.

And, probably about 25% of the games I've downloaded won't work.

I feel like I've taken a giant step backwards with OS5. I like the camera, voice recorder and other physical improvements, but the new OS makes me a little upset.

Fast. 51MB of usable RAM. 400MHz processor. Best quality screen (even if it is only 320x320). WiFi built in; add bluetooth for about $100. Excellent built-in keyboard. Did I mention fast??

Yes, it's plastic. So what? So is my cell phone, and it takes far more abuse than my PalmOS does.

You want a camera? Try one of the Nikons. They'll beat a NZ90 hands down.

$500 price tag is a lot easier to swallow than $800 for an NZ90. Leaves you $300 to buy accessories or that Nikon camera.

I LOVE my Zire71. I never thought I'd jump ship on Sony, but the Zire turned me around. Great screen and speed. Feels great in my hand. Nav stick blows the jog dial away. LOUD internal speaker and better camera than my NR70V.

LOVE IT

Yes it is big, but it is still fantastic for all you can do with it.
I still use my Vx to carry around for meetings and taking notes and then sync with the NZ-90 which is good for everything else. This eliminates constantly carrying around the big box and gives my still good Vx something to do !

So I have now coined the "Desktop PDA" and "Mobile PDA" :-)
