View Full Version : How do you take notes?

I've been a Palm user for years.  I never got fast enough with Graffiti to accurately take notes during a meeting.  Too many errors and too slow.  My handwriting is on the bad side but not that bad.

Am I just clumsy and slow or has other people found a better way to jot down notes quickly and accurately?

Is there a better app then the built in Notepad?

Better input method then Graffiti?

I just take down keywords and I don't mind the speling ;). After the meeting (or class), I review my notes and fix it. It's a good way to review and add to what has been discussed. I try to review the notes as soon as I can because if I don't I won't be able to recall everything.

Usually I take notes on my laptop using MindManager (http://www.mindjet.com/index.shtml). I then decide what bits and pieces I'd like to have on my Clie and transfer accordingly (e.g., as a doc or image). However, for taking notes directly on my Clie, I mostly rely on Shadow (www.codejedi.com). I probably couldn't take extensive notes, but it's fine for short items (fireball's keywords) and actions. For real quick -- and temporary -- things (like jotting down a phone #), I tend to just use a drawing app. I probably need to be more consistent and systematic so that I can become more effective. Sometimes I fumble around trying to decide what app to use and end up falling behind and missing something important.

I often use my SJ20 for extensive note-taking - both in meetings and in archival research.

I use a Stowaway keyboard and WordSmith, which make me happy as a clam for this purpose.

I use Text+ to insure that the graffiti recognition is slower than normal..i also use a graffiti echo program to further reduce the speed of the graffiti. and then i get angry and use a MEAD high tech, low acid, spiral bound notebook....when i have time i play minesweeper on my clie..

GraffitiAnywhere, an app that lets you write on the screen and provides virtual ink, has really improved my speed with graffiti because I can now draw characters as large as I need, even the height of the whole screen. I dont' have to be consistant in the size of the characters either. I've been able to write pretty fast with it. I havn't actually taken notes in class, but I have used it for writting a few memos.

Mrfloyd, you may want to give GraffitiAnywhere a shot and see if it improves your accuracy. Search for it at palmgear.com to find the download. It is freeware.

I'm using the fitaly stamp "keyboard" which fits over the graffiti area. It works pretty well and after using it for a week I can do about 35 words per minute.

Word Complete (http://www.palmgear.com/software/showsoftware.cfm?sid=75605620030109120040&prodID=3770) would pop-up list of words after you write the first two letters. Then you just tap the right word. You can also add words to the list.

I also build shortcuts to many long, special, and often use words.

I tried the fitaly thing and I just couldnt get used to it...with the regged version do you get some keyboard overlays in the mail or something? or do you just have to print them off?

The demo of the fitaly stamp comes with a PDF of the keyboard which you print, cut-out and place over the graffiti area. You don't have to tape the keyboard in place. I'm able to get mine to stay in place by simply placing the corner of the paper inbetween the screen and the case.

Try QuickType (its freeware), it works great. I printed a keyboard layout in a scotch tape and stick that on the graffiti area. My text input really improved.

I surprise people by how fast I am in Grafitti (and still wildly inaccurate, I backspace a lot) but mostly I break out the Stowaway to do 100wpm if I have room in the classroom and it has a wider desk.

Since we are talking about Graffiti and input, is anyone having problems with certain characters? I'm having problems putting in letters like: s, g, and e. I also have problems with numbers, too. Are there any enhancements that could help make the graffiti more accurate? I upgraded to a SJ30 from a Palm IIIxe and really didn't have any problems like this with the Palm. Any help would is appreciated.

Thanks!

i find the smoothness of the clie screen gives me problems with 'g' and 'h'. 811 tape across it increases the recognition rate for me.

Graffiti help suggests us to write in big stroke and I have no problem since. For "G", I write the number 6 on the alphabet area. For "V", I write "U" from right to left.

Q. I hate making Q's. The first time I make them, they turn out to be G's, the second time they turn into Q's. Always.

As for note-taking, I use my Clie in class for that very purpose. WordSmith is my app of choice. I primarily use graffiti, because I can do it in relative silence, but if I need outrageous speed I'll break out the built-in, somewhat creaky, thumbboard. Corrections are made whenever I get a chance, backspaces coming only if I find a word unreadable. Things get difficult in some of my classes. Subscripts and superscripts are sometimes necessary, and that gets to be a little time consuming, but I can usually go back at a later time to make those corrections.

For "Q", try writing "O" counterclockwise, starts from 12 o'clock, goes around to a full circle, and ends with a dash from 12 o'clock to 1 o'clock. It works like a charm for me.  I have similar problem when I first learning graffiti.  Apparently I did not make the full, just 3/4 of a circle (from 12 to 3 o'clock) before ending with a dash.  The full circle loop is the key stroke.

TealScript (http://www.handango.com/PlatformProductDetail.jsp?siteId=1&jid=697E3E6CD77E3227C1423B6442F1CAF7&productId=3668&optionId=1_1_2&productType=2&catalog=1&txtSearch=tealscript&sectionId=0&platformId=1) has greatly improved my recognition. TealScript and TextPlus are a powerful combination!

For taking a lot of notes, I use Word to Go with my Stowaway keyboard. When I'm done at work for the day, before I go home I synchronize with my desktop PC and everything is there in Word, and Excel. When I get home, I synchronize again and everything from work is now on my home PC.

I'd use the voice recorder- if it was an NX

Hi guys,

You should try the Jot 2.0 (Grafitti 2) as Palm will include this in all the new Palm OS devices. Palm claimed that this handwritting recognition works better than the old grafitti.
I've just started to use it today and I like it very much! Give it a try..

I'm thinking about using it to take a lot of notes in college now and sync them. So most likely I'll be using my stowaway and WordSmith.
