View Full Version : ZLauncher displays thumbnails for .prc pictures

Hi. I just downloaded ZLauncher and love it!

On my Memory Stick I have many pics. I'm not
sure how, but some of them have .prc extensions, which
I believe is because they were converted using Picture
Gear Pocket.

Anyway when I open the MS tab in ICON view, and navigate to the folder where I keep my pics, the .prc pictures have tese have cool little thumbnails as their icons. The .jpg files do not have thumbnails.

Is this a known feature? Is there a way to get thumbnails of the .jpg pics? If it's in the manual I missed it. And I don't use PG Pocket anymore, and the regular PG does not do this conversion.

Thanks!

Do the thumbnails show up in the default launcher as well if you move the image files to RAM? I remember I used to use a program on my Visor that would convert images to prc files so you could view them without an image viewer. It made the icons for the files out of a thumbnail of the image.

In the standard Launcher, the icons do not show up in the memory stick category. The picture files do not show up at all.

ZLauncher, when looking at the MS, appears to function as a file manager when that tab is open. All files are displayed, even in ICON mode.

I am still perplexed.

Anyone know how to convert jpg's to prc's without picture gear pocket?

Peter,

The jpgs don't have associated thumbnails, but use a standard icon from the icon file. The PGP thumbs are a known (and neat) feature. I don't know of another way to convert jpgs to prcs other than PGP's desktop app, but I'm not sure why you'd want to do that. They are essentially bitmaps and take up about 200K on a 320x320, 16-bit color device. Jpgs are way more space efficient, and you can preview them from the context menu (tap and hold, select preview).

plombard...

First of all, Thanks for registering! Glad to see you've chosen to become a part of the community.

Copy a few of those files into your RAM. Actually take them from the memory stick and put them in RAM. The standard launcher should then see them and display the thumbnail icons. As tanker said, this is a feature of PGP, and not Zlauncher.

Thanks for the welcome.

I see what you mean about the file sizes Tanker.

Ocell, Tanker, I have tried numerous times to copy the pics (jpg and pgp) to Ram, but they never show up anywhere in the standard launcher. Am I misunderstanding you?

Jpgs can't be copied to RAM in Palm OS, since they aren't in the required database format. PGP files must be copied between RAM/card using the PGP app, because it converts them to the appropriate formats in the process. I don't believe that images show up in the standard launcher, only apps.

I'm not an image expert, but these are my rudimentary understandings. I tried copying a PGP image to the ZLauncher Backimage directory. It did not display with a thumbnail in ZLauncher, but it did in the PictureGear directory. Hmmmm...

Ok... so PGP is not making a stand alone image. It is only the image file?

I had an app (let you hotsync files without doing a whole hotsync... I forgot the name) that would convert an image into a stand alone PRC file. It did not need an image viewer, the viewer software was compiled into the file. The icon was a thumbnail of the image. These were seen by the launcher as individual applications.

PGP files obviously need the PGP software to be viewed. I'm sorry about my confusion.

Tanker,

When I copy the pgp file to the ZLauncher/Background folder, it DOES show up as a thumbnail. I used the native "Copy to" function that appears when you tap and hold on the picture icon. This also works using other file manager programs. However, I have found that if you tap and hold on the picture, then select "Backimage" then for some reason it does NOT show up as a thumbnail when it copies to the same folder, it just shows as an icon.

hmmmm.

Peter,

Interesting. I duplicated your procedure and it did show as a thumbnail. My previous attempt using the file manager did not. I just retried it with the file manager and it worked this time. I must have not done what I thought I did last time. Sorry about the misdirection. Tapping and holding on the thumbnail, then selecting it as the backimage worked fine and did not affect the thumbnail.

I think we're trying too hard or digging where no man should go... :)

Why drown yourself in matters of great import when you can dabble in frivolity? =-)

There is a process on the Clie that can convert jpegs into .prc files.

Place your jpeg images in this directory:  /DCIM/100MSDCF/
Rename the jpegs as follows:  DSC00001, DSC00002, etc.(Both the directory mentioned above and the file name mentioned here are the default directory and file name given to images taken with a digital camery.  The PictureGear app on the clie is built to view images straight from your sony digi camera's MS.  Some of the newer sony cameras can not utilize the above mentioned directory.)
Open PG Pocket and select MS for location at the top of the screan.
Now select the DCF button at the bottom of the screan.
Select the button at the bottom of the screan showing an arrow pointing to a handheld.
Select your images and Import them into RAM.
Your images have now been converted into a prc and can be moved back onto the MS.

Use Pilot Install (http://pinstall.envicon.com) should give you what you are looking for.
