What exactly is the image converter's compression method? I've taken a 250M mpeg into a 88M clie movie file using the tool. i don't think i had a high compression on the 250M movie, and haven't tested it out with other types of compressions, but..

1. what does the image converter do? drop frames so that clie can display?
2. does it really matter what kind of compression i do on the source movie? would mpeg-4 movies get converted to smaller +better clie movies than other compression? I've used virtualdub to convert some of my divx movies to image converter compatible avis. I just don't know if virtualdub compression method makes any difference if image converter will end up recompressing the movie.

The Image Converter converts the files to MPEG-4 compression, so thats why the files sizes are becoming so small. It also drops the frame rate down to 15fps and reduces the resolution to 320x240. So if your source file is in MPEG-4, you probably won't see much of a decrease in file size and if the source is in Divx or or similar format, the file size might actually increase.

Another thing to be aware of is that you shouldn't compress the source file (the thing you feed into ImageConverter) too highly. The problem is that say you used VirtualDub to compress down a DivX into a smaller standard AVI. You'll notice that the picture starts becoming a little blocky because of the lossy video compression. The problem is that ImageConverter can't tell the difference between the image features introduced by the distortion associated with this lossy compression and with real features in the image so it tries to maintain both. Hence, the overall compression ratio decreases and, if I'm not mistaken, Image Converter automatically reduces its internal quality setting to maintain the filesize.

Wow, I didn't think anyone else picked up on this. I have also noticed filesize increase after squeezing down divx avi, and it looks fuzzy afterward. Recommend using highest quality source video for imageconverter.

I got problem converting avi files through image convertor. Is it incompatible or are my files corrupted? I tried it with all my avi files but it didnt work.

Yes, uncompressed source is best but I have also done DIVX that looks great. It is not just the compression it is THE SOURCE from which it was compressed... You rip a DVD str8 to hi-rez DIVX then thru IC it will still look good. You take DIVX compressed file of a postage stamp sized trailer then thru IC, it will look NASTY!

any suggestions on easily converting divx movies to clie friendly movies? I usually do:
1. divx avi -> microsoft mpeg4 avi (using virtualdub)
2. microsoft mpeg4 -> clie (using clie image converter)

any better/faster ways to do this?
thanks

This is my first post and I must say that everything I've read on here is very exciting.

I've been trying this DVD ripping thing for the first time and I'm almost getting there using the DVDx program suggested here. My only question concerns my Clie model and whether or not I am able to do what all you guys are discussing.

I have a PEG-NR70 that comes with gMOVIE program for watching movies, and I downloaded KINOMA for watching clsoe to full screen 480/320 movie trailers. Is the process for ripping the same for my particular model Clie and will I be able to watch it using either of these 2 programs? Most of what I read about here are instructions for NX model Clies. Should I download another program to watch these movies. Is the Movie Watcher program I've read about not for my model?

I don't have the ImageConverter program I've read about so much on other threads. Is this not provided with my model, can I get, where can I get it, can I even use it, or do I even need it to convert my *.mpg files to something else?

Does my model use this *.mqv file type other people are talking about?

I've ripped a DVD to an *.mpg file that's almost 1GB, now I just need to get it down to size to fit on my 128 MB stick and then find the right program to run it on my clie. Is there a program that will utilize a good portion of my large 480/320 screen?

Give me some answers PLEASE!!!

The Image Converter, .MQV files and the Clie Movie Player are all things that are only work with OS5 Clies.
Since you are on an NR70, you will want to stick to gMovie or Kinoma. But really, you will only want Kinoma since that does the 480x320.
To make movies that will run in Kinoma, you will need to buy the Kinoma Producer app. Once you have that, you can turn your MPEG's into files playable on your Clie. The files sizes will be smaller than the MPEG's you ripped from the DVD's since the resolution will be lower and the framerate will be lower. You can also reduce the bitrate, but the quality will decrease at the same time. Basicly, you will have to spend some time playing with the different bitrates to get something that is of the right size, and still good enough quality. I'm not sure you will be able to fit an entire movie on a 128MB using Kinoma and have it still be watchable, but you never know until you try.:)
