View Full Version : What Palm file do you use?

have about four different file programs for my Palm at present. For the most part each do different things. But I still think there is some over kill. Now I really like Resco Explorer for it's Zip capabilty when I download files from Snapper Mail and also to transfer files from card to Ram. But I fine it somewhat busy when looking at files in the tree. Palm files have a clearer setup but I can only transfer files to Palm_DM which somewhat could explain the use of that file. FileZ I mainly use for deleting Megacom I had forever.

I use Resco Explorer exlusively, but never use the split-screen (it can be toggled). It does everything I ever need, and in fact the only other file manager I've in the last 6 months - was FileZ - and the reason was to copy updates of RE to internal memory (I don't HotSync). I think that speaks volumes of how much I like Resco Explorer!

FileProg. I have Filez and UniCMD installed, but rarely use them. FileProg is the best I've found, by far. It does depend a lot on what you do with the file manager, some do certain things better than others.

Since I don't have a Chunky Computer, RExplorer is more a necessity than a favorite, it does everything I need and lots I don't need
I still can't figure the RE Search feature though (probably just me) so I use FileProg for a quick search.
For a quick lookup of CreatorID or whatver I use the ZLauncher file manager because it's handy.

I think there is a bug with v4.01.04 with the explorer music player I can't get out of it with exiting the program itself. I downloaded Fileprog to check it out I wish it was in 320x480 it would replace Palm Files and Megacom. I like Resco Explore a lot but seems somewhat busy unless I toggle ICON view

I have the following:
Resco Explorer
FileZ
FileProg
UniCMD
SuperUtil
After a recent Hard Reset the I restored RE and FileZ. I mostly use RE and when I have problems I use FileZ. I used to use FileProg when RE or FileZ wouldn't do what I wanted to do (fileprog seems to have less dependence on sys req).
My favorite combo is RescoExplorer and Filez
RescoExplorer is extreamly powerful and works well in landscape orientation, not to mention that it has smb and ftp, and online backup storage (by resconet)
Ive used Filez since I had my palm m100, and it gets the job done plus its a realy small aplication.
Other programs I have tried are UniCMD and MCfile

You don't even want to know how many I've tried...well maybe you do :D
Resco Explorer
PalmOne Files
FileZ
VFSi
3X Com
UniCMD
FileProg
File Caddy
McFile
ZL File Manager
(there is probably more, but I can't remember).

I've tried TealMover and McFile as well, but never really bought into them. Although TealMover does allow you to change some things that others don't.

TealMover has the added function of allowing you to set the "lock count" of many programs. They claim this can add stability to programs that may get flushed out of the cache: maybe kinda like what resco locker does. Not sure if there is a difference with this

isnt that the function of the freeware RescoLocker?, though locking crap in the flushable dbcache causes memory and instability issues (excluding the Audiopatch)

RE does everything I need (and more) incredibly well. I have FileZ on SD for rare moments I need to step out of the RE box. It's been a long time though. I even copy RE updates to RAM from within RE! It works fine, really! But when I want to make it clean (v3 to v4 update for example), I uninstall then install with MyInstall (http://www.freewarepalm.com/utilities/myinstall.shtml) by our buddy Alex Pruss.

WOW!!! I will never Hotsync again!!! Yey!
FileZ, UniCMD and RE, combined with MyInstall (Resco should really include this in RE -- hint hint Janus) are all anyone should ever need. Of course, most of the launchers contain rudimentary file management as well (just like RE and UniCMD contain rudimentary launcher stuff).

I use ResExp, FileZ and ClieFiles(McFile)
My most used was FileZ, and ClieFiles to deal with zip archives, but now my most used is ResExp by far...
I still use FileZ as a fallback 'tho, e.g. for updating ResExp or fixing things when I've broken ResExp ;)

I use PInstall quite a bit to install all my apps. The nice thing about it is that it allows you to either install to card or RAM and it uses the notifications that hotsync does, so Uninstall Manager works well with it.

What is MyInstall?

What is MyInstall?
It is a utility that takes a program file stored in "MyInstall" directory on a SD card and installs it on the Tx. This allows you to install programs without HotSyncing. You would have to transfer the program to the MyInstall directory from your PC using a SD card reader/writer.

I believe that MyInstall uses the HotSync notifications as well and this is what Alex means by "simulates a HotSync"
Works well with UninstallManager too.
I only use MyInstall, I open the zip with RE and drag/Copy to MyInstall
I updated from RE v3 to RE v4 using this MyInstall method with no problems and was thinking then that RE users should be able to select either 'Copy to MyInstall' or 'Install Directly to RAM' so that the 'Install to RAM' option does this automatically.
I may suggest it to RE later when things slow down, it's not necessary enough to bother them now ;)
@ DUKE40
One little thing about MyInstall that 'tricks' some people (yeah me )
Install MyInstall to the Palm then you must create the MyInstall (exactly that) directory in the Root Directory of the card (MyInstall will not do it automatically)
The Root Directory is the first (base) directory and contains the DCIM and PALM directories and maybe some others, depending on your apps installed.
Move or Copy any Palm files you wish to install on your device to the MyInstall directory.
Launch the MyInstall app.
MyInstall will scan it's card directory and install any Palm files it finds. Done :D

Hey guys please tell me what is the function of Palm_DM. I use TXinternal drive but I am not sure why? :(

You mean the PALM_DM in BuiltIn yeah?
To be honest don't know it's function (am interested to learn) but I have been told (and read) to not touch it at all :)

Yes so why have access to it

The TX comes with a 128MB builtin flash card. Off the root ("/") of that is folders. The first being "Audio" which is put there by either the OS or Ptunes, and this is where music goes. The second being "Palm", the OS creates this in builtin, just like it does on an expansion card, if you download a file with Blazer to builtin, it will go to /Palm/Blazer/Downloads/. The Next folder is PALM, and this is created because of a bug in the OS. It doesn't understand the difference in capitals well, so some app will store their stuff here instead of Palm. The next is PALM_DM and this is where all the PRC and PDB files are stored. And they are stored, the OS can't read or write actively to this area, and that is why there is DbCache (forget about ROM/DbCache/Dynamic Heap, those are unrelated to builtin). The only program that can access the PALM_DM directory directly is NVBackup (thus why it is so reliable). The next folder is Pics & Vidoes, and this is where builtin Pics & Vids are stored. Any other questions?
answered by BrentDC :) Thanks
so BrentDC can you suggest some use to keep Builtin
Im not BrentDC sorry, but maybe I can add my thoughts :D
TXinternalDrive hack was developed by a spanish person (if im correct) who wanted the TX to have an accessible internal drive like the older T5 palms. Though only certain programs can access the "Hidden" BUILTIN like RescoExplorer, Filez, ptunes, media, and NVbackup. TXinternalDrive was made to let other programs have this same access.
The PALM_DM directory, is a direct access (or backdoor) to the RAM of the palm. Olderpalms like the T5 only had BUILTIN and not the RAM directory palm TX's have today, so (if im correct) this Palm_DM used to be the only way to access files in the palm. Because Palm_DM is an unregulated directory (no magor locks or preventative blocks) Programs like NVbackup can do basicaly whatever they want, thats why NVbackup is such a powerfull backup application. (other backup programs do no use Palm_DM thus they get errors somtimes and crash when copying and restoring to RAM)
Palm most likely hid this directory in the Palm TX, because that form of access is suceptible to "accidental mayhem" by unknowing users. RAM is a much more protective way to access PRC's in the palm :D
But yeah, there are some programs that have aquard occurances like the Palm and PALM folders, but those are just silly things that palm will never address.
I hope this helps, this is what I have infered from bits of information here and there, anyone who thinks I connected the dots wrong, Please correct me :D I love getting any facts straight :D

I thought when I read that post it seemed familiar ;) cms is "mostly" right. Palm_DM is not really a back door, so much that it is where Palm OS program (PRC, PDB) files are stored. Usually when you use a file manager, it does not show you the directory your files (files in internal memory) in internal memory are stored. You also cannot do anything to those files, you will get "Access Denied" errors when you try to delete them. They have to be deleted "through" DbCache, as far as I understand it.

So is there any usefullness that can come out of this Builtin drive to improve the TX?

Well what is the difference between transferring a program onto the card with RE and then installing it to RAM vs using MyInstall. Please explain

Hi, firstly, using MyInstall is habit now, I used it before buying RE and it works so well I just keep using it :)
Before using MyInstall (and RE) I often had the problem of an update not working when I copied to RAM using a File Manager. I would have to delete the old version and then copy the new.
MyInstall has perfectly installed and updated every app, DA, Prefs Panel etc, every time even when it is in a 'Package Installer' etc.
Anyway, the little things:
instead of Syncing apps to the Palm many people put the Expansion Card into a CardReader and drag/copy the files from the DeskTop to the MyInstall directory, then it's just a matter of inserting the card in the Palm and launching MyInstall.
This saves using a File Manager to find and select the files and then copy/install.
So, MyInstall is not necessary but it sure is organised and handy :D
