View Full Version : Is the conversion 1:1 for movies on a Clie?

Hello all,
I've been looking at getting a bigger CF card for my NX primarily for playing movies and was thinking the following:
A CD holds approx 650mb of data (i think). So if i have a movie that is 650mb in length, when i convert it to play on the Clie will it still be 650mb in size or is it reduced (or for that matter is it increased)?
My reasoning is this. If a file is reduced to say under 512mb (or 256mb), then i dont really need a 1gb card. Id be happy knowing that i could fit a CD into that particular card therefore saving myself some money.
I have found a 512mb card here in Australia pretty cheap but i want to know if this will suit my purpose.
Has anyone converted a file around 650mb? What was the result?

Typically, it will be smaller when converted, sometimes, much smaller. But this all depends on the compression originally used, the bandwidth (bps) and such. If your original was saved at 320 x 240 and high compression and you make it 480 x 320 for the Clie, it may actually be larger.
of course ymmv.:)

if you take a bucket of food and put it in the oven, will it still be the same size?
maybe.
depends on the video codec used in the source file, the pixel dimensions of the source video, the format of the input audio, and any number of other variables.

hmmmm.....
ok then, lets put it another way. whats the best people have converted a movie to comfortably play it on the nx without losing too much quality.
will i really need that 1gb card to do it or can i get away with the 512mb?
of course there is always variables to consider but there has to be a general minimum compression ratio to covert movies to clie format.....isnt there?

At the moment, unless you use Kinoma Producer, you're pretty much out of luck anyway. You're better off with the 1GB CF card.

Scroll halfway down the following link and it should answer some of your questions. If you have any others let me know.
In summary though, when using Image Converter I've found there's little difference on the input codec for the output file. The big thing is the Quality setting in Image Converter.

It really does depend.
I took the super-high quality Matrix Reloaded trailer, original file size is 50meg. After converting it with Quicktime Pro and Image Converter, it just takes up 9 megs on my MS. The quality is amazing too! This is with stereo sound and everything.

would you be able to put that 9MB file somewhere for me to grab? I don't have quicktime pro, but would like to see how good the quality can be for clie movies.
thanks.

Why do you say this? The Image Convertor does a great job converting movies and the file sizes are small to.
