I'm re-posting this in this forum, after relative silence in the General forum:

Last year I moved from an SJ33 to a TH55 [thanks, Dan] and only sporadically tried to play some music on some MSs that had played in my SJ33 - the attempts were always unsuccessful, and I just never got around to trying to figure out what was going on until after I copied many of my CDs onto larger capacity [1 and 2GB Lexar MS Pro Duo] MSs and became thoroughly frustrated because these didn't play either.

So I have two separate problems:

1. I have some 128MB MSs with music tracks under PALM\PROGRAMS\Msaudio. One, a Sony MS, plays in both the SJ33 and the TH55. Another, an IOData MS, plays only in the SJ33. When I put this one into the TH55, the face of AudioPlayer say "No music tracks"

2. When I put the 2BG Lexar MS Pro Duo into the TH55, I get this popup error message in AudioPlayer: "Invalid Track. This track is unavailable for one of the following reasons: the card is write-protected or does not support copyright control, or the track file is corrupted." The path on these sticks is PALM\PROGRAMS\Msaudio\album title. That's the only thing I think may be wrong - when I look at the 128MB sticks, the individual tracks are listed, not album titles.

IIRC, I copied these at 128 mbs.

Anyone have a clue about solving either one of these problems?
Thanks,
cactus

The second one is easy, I would think. The TH55 audio player simply won't play any file that is not stored directly in the MSAUDIO folder. No sub-folders or any other organization is allowed. It is a very unforgiving program, which is why I switched to PocketTunes a long time ago.

Can't say about the first one. The TH55 might just be persnickety about the card or its formatting.

The TH55 uses a crapper DSP (But also less power hungry) for MP3 playback than the OS4 Clies.

Stuff to check:
- ALL MP3s have to be 44.1kHz CBR and between 32kbps and 320kbps
- MP3s must go in "\PALM\PROGRAMS\MSAUDIO"
- MemoryStick (Pro) MUST be FAT16 (Will be by default if it's =<2GB)

On my T665 I made all the MP3s VBR to save space, and found I had to re-transcode every one when I moved to the TH55.

Not sure about the IOData thing; Does the card work in the TH55 at all?
Can you browse it using ClieFiles/McFile/FileZ/RescoExplorer?

Update:

1. I checked both 128 MSs that will work in the SJ33 but not the TH55. One is an IOData and the other a SanDisk - both sticks now show tracks [instead of "No music tracks"] when I insert them into the TH55, but the "Invalid Track. This track is unavailable for one of the following reasons: the card is write-protected or does not support copyright control, or the track file is corrupted" message pops up when I hit the play button, and when I click OK on the error message, it cycles quickly through the tracks, and returns to track 1.

When I look at the MSs in ClieFiles, it shows all the folders with the path PALM\PROGRAMS\MSAUdio and individual tracks within the folder.

2. How do I check whether the files on the later-copied mp3s are CBR or VBR? Would there be a difference between the the SJ33 accepting VBRs and the TH55 not accepting VBRs? What would be involved in "transcoding" my mp3s if that's the problem? I've been using CDex to do the copying.

How do I check to see if the 1 and 2GB Memory Stick Pro Duos are FAT16 instead of FAT32?

I tried a completely blank Lexar Memory Stick Pro Duo 1gb MS, dragged a bunch of individual tracks into PALM\PROGRAMS\Msaudio. Still got the "Invalid track" error message. So olderTechnology's simple fix to eliminate the album folders scheme didn't work.

I'd like to continue to use AudioPlayer instead of loading on more software, so that I conserve my battery. Thanks for your continuing help.
