There are a number of eBook readers out there. Some can convert text files, some read .doc files, .txt or .pdb files or whatever. I have been reading about some readers that can display embedded images, is there any use for this? Do many ebooks have pictures?

I'd liketo hear about what reader you're using, and what features it has that makes you like it.

I'm CSpotRun and eReader. Both has auto-scroll with adjustable speed and bookmarks. eReader will display an image (cover page?) and will load books from an expansion card.

thxZ

Mobipocket reader has illustrations that are able to zoom. However pdf files vary in ability to zoom on a palm device. Usually you can zoom once and have to go back to 1:1 size before returning to the text reading.

Picsel on Th-55 is able to read some pdf files and the zoom is probably one of the best for pdf files. I have tried to use pdf maps but sometimes the resolution is not ample enough to use as a map.

I use mobipocket, ereader and palmpdf. eReader does just about everything I need, I use mobipocket for those books I can't get in ereader format, pdf, or doc format. PalmPDF is by far the best for viewing pdfs and is free. I didn't install pdf2go when I installed D2G 10.x. I like the autoscroll in MP better than the implementation in ereader (IIRC, the up and down are reversed in the 2 readers - MP has down slowing the scroll and ereader has down speeding it up). Also the center button does a better job of stopping scrolling in MP than in ereader.

Even given these "problems" with autoscroll, I use ereader more, maybe because I just have more books in ereader format.

The reversed up-down button thing is probably from the code, because the programmer didn't want to deal with reversing the value. So basically, up increases the time gap to scroll up one pixel (or one line) slowing things, and down decreases the time gap to scroll speeding things, and making it seem backwards.

The whole thing I'm asking about pictures in eBooks is because I've never seen one with emdedded pictures, or expected an eBook to have any. But if there is software out there that can handle the popular types including the pictures, then I'll go with that. Having a couple eBook reader apps on my Palm isn't so bad, as they reside on the SD card until needed, but I don't really care to have a bunch of converter apps on my PC, when one ought to do.

About the only feature I really look for in an eBook reader is to use the hard buttons to start & stop the scrolling.

BTW- I use Adobe's Palm PDF reader, and it works fine for me.

thx

I have a couple of books that have embedded pictures, not including the intro photo (davinci code being one of them) ereader does a wonderful job with these.

I tend to use PalmFiction for just about everything... it doesn't display pictures, but it can handle pretty much every non-proprietary text format (plus MS Word) directly off the card, even in a zipped archive. Plus, it is completely configurable, with 3 different autoscrolls for example, that can be set up however you want. It can be a bit daunting to set PalmFiction up the first time (the defaults aren't bad, but they don't show off its strengths), but once you do, there's no going back to other readers.

As for displaying images, I don't know of any app that displays images embedded in rtf, doc, or alongside html files, but there are a few like iSilo and Plucker that can embed them inside their own pdb archives. You can never get them back out of iSilo however (you can only extract the text).

I used iSilo to read "How to Wire a New House (http://www.selfhelpandmore.com/homewiringusa/2002/maindwelling/newdwel/newdwelshowp.htm)" when I wired my son's house we built. The pictures made the text clear on things like 3 way switch wiring etc. Very handy reference on my Palm at the time.

I like Plucker. It can convert any text or html file, pictures included. I prefer to get straight text or html, and do my own conversion instead of downloading something in a special format.

Nothing beats Plucker. I use the Plucker Desktop to bundle online news, Apple/IT interest sites, Sci-Fi.com news and others, every morning ready for my first sync of the day.

Download eBooks in HTML format and Pluckerise them - graphics and links preserved.

. . . and the best eBooks on the market go to http://baen.com/ Try the free library to see how good the authors and stories are!!

Supposedly Tor Books is about to try and compete with Baen in that category... check out their website for details :)

Comic e-books maybe?

hmmmm...
PSP has scanned amine books put into a folder that gets put into the picture file.
I tried comic guru (the trial) and decided not to purchase it. It still works on my desktop but the palm version expired. Also you have to go to their files that have various unknown comics.

Sure you can scan comic books to read later, but why do it unless others scan also so you won't be the only reader of all that scanned work?
