Just bought a NR70V but haven't got a clue as to how to get it to play music!
where do l get MP3 files from? (Of the ATRAC3/OpenMG type)
How do l prepare it for transfer to my clie?
Why won't sonic stage recognise my memory stick?
Help please!

Whew...this is going to be a long one ;)
1) You can use a program like MusicMatch Jukebox (http://www.musicmatch.com) to "rip" songs off of your CDs. OR you can download MP3s using Kazaa or another file-sharing program.
2) Once the MP3s are on your computer, make sure that you have installed MSExport from the CD that came with the NR. With the NR in the cradle, an MS in the slot, run "MSImport" on the NR. I prefer this to using SonicStage
3) Your MS should now show up as a removable drive, and you can drag/drop, copy/paste, etc just like any other folder. Make sure that the folder you put songs in is /Palm/Programs/MSAUDIO, or the Audio Player won't find them.
good luck!

Thanks for the advice. It works!
Stuff the sonic stage software!! Why make things so complicated?
Drag and drop rules - forever!!

Also, MP3 audio MUST be encoded at 44.1KHz sampling rate to play on a Clie.
The data rate can be anything from 96 kbps to 256 kbps, and can be either constant bit rate or variable.
(Note: the newer OS5 Clies can not play VBR...)

Yeah...good call. Good to get that fact out of the way early on.
If you want smaller file sizes, MusicMatch only lets you go to 96kbps or something like that before it cuts the sampling frequency on you (from 44.1khz). I use a program called dbPowerAmp to convert my files below 96, so I can fit more on, while still maintaining the requisite 44.1 khz sampling frequency.

I use Lame to change MP3 files I have created to the 44.1 KHz sampling requirement. As long as it has that sampling rate, you can change the bit rate to what ever you want. I have been able to go as low as 16 kbps (spoken voice) and as high as 256 kbps.

No kidding?! Wow, I'm almost glad I don't have a newer Clie, as that would severely limit my ability to use it as an mp3 player, being the stickler for quality that I am. ;)

I have a SONY PC with a MS slot, so I just dragged and dropped the MP3 files to the drive and then inserted into the NR, but they still won't play--is that because of the sampling frequency they were recorded at? How do I find out?
To create my MP3's for some I used Audiograbber and for some I used Direct CD's Spin Doctor (some were originally cassette tapes). None of them work.
Where can I get LAME?
Please e-mail me if you can help: perinon@aol.com

Using MusicMatch I found it quiet easy to make a mp3 file. From there I could use the navigator or, better, TotalCommander to drag the files from the c-drive to the MSAUDIO directory of the Cllie. Let me know if you need further help but don't forget to get MusicMatch.

are u using the Magic Gate Memory Stick( White ) or the simple Memory Sitck( Purple ).
Because it doesn't not work on the simple memory stick in my NR, but the Magic Gate it work, tell me how does it work in the purple Memory Stick.

Man, what is it w/Sony & all their wacky "this will work, but that won't work" policies?
How do they expect the Clie to become the Walkman of the 2000's if everything's such a hassle for ordinary ppl. to load / use, etc.?
Anyway, I wanted to make sure nobody else can hear MP3s on their NR70V w/out using headphones. Is that the case? (Except for very faint sound.)

Jordanhs, I could play back music off my purple one- dont know why you can't play yours. Must be this whole bit-rate mumbo jumbo these ppl are talking about
nnrr7700vv, I completely agree with you on Sony and their stupid policies!!! And btw, I can hear sound off my Clie. Trying listening to it in a quiet room- maybe it'll sound louder??

I can hear them, but you're right...it's relatively useless. Unless you're in a quiet room and have the speaker turned toward you, it's not worth it.
I got a chance to hear a friends T|C, though, and THAT speaker rocks.
