After a spontaneous soft reset on my TX (while updating pTunes) I have lost use of the command bar. Taping on any of the icons does not work.

I have tried recalibrating the digitizer several times and have soft reset several times and am thinking of trying a hard reset. Before I go that route however, I thought I would ask the 1src gurus to see if anyone had other suggestions or fixes.

In all other ways the device is working perfectly. Though I don't use the command bar for much it sometimes it is necessary to use the menu, brightness or wifi commands.

malbo,

Sounds like two (or more) pieces of s/w are conflicting & Ptunes is one of them. Something may be corrupted. Therefore I don't think it is the digitizer, simply b/c re-calibrating it doesn't work & there are no other such probs on your TX. Flaky digitizers usually misbehave worse & worse, in an incremental fashion. First it is off by a millimeter or two, then by more & more.

Try doing a warm reset, holding down the "UP" navigation button while pressing the reset button. Keep the UP button depressed until you get to the 2nd screen, then release.

Then see if you can bring up the command bar. If you don't have dbFixit, fm pimlicosoftware.com, to check the Ptunes db's, & warm reset doesn't work, I would recommend deleting PTunes & seeing if that helps. You can always restore.

Let everyone know how it goes.

Good luck,

I just upgraded to the recent version of PTunes as well and have had no problems. I imagine something else is to blame, what however, is the question. As he said, however, do a warm reset and see if the command bar is working. If after that test, it is working, look into any programs that ask you "restart after reset". You might try turning off one at a time, resetting after each "uncheck" until you find the culprit. You might also check into disabling any or all hacks and see what happens. In fact, try disabling all hacks first, and then try running each background app as I mentioned previously, as it's the quickest.

Also disable any programs that use pen swipes to activate, such as that DA style calculator (I can't for the life of me remember it's name!).

If you do a warm reset, and you still have no use of the command bar, still commence the above directions, although I don't believe you'll have to. If you do however, and still have no luck, worse case scenario is that you'll have to do a hard reset, and reinstall everything. Which, isn't always as bad as it seems. I just did a hard reset recently after a hot sync (which I never do), basically screwed up every setting and installation I had on my TX (that's why I say delete everything in the "install" folder)! However, make sure on your computer (XP), that you (I would at any rate) delete any and all files in the "install" directory of your Palm folder.

You're frustrated, I know, but there is a solution, we just have to find it!

Let us know how it goes.

ST, good to hear about your PT experience. You were 100% on about the file by file isolation technique, & corruption due to whatever conflict caused his 1st crash could easily have caused it. I was gonna recommend it if warm reset didn't go. You picked up the ball on that.

I liked how you thought to include pen-swipe apps to have those prefs turned off while isolating.

I downloaded and installed the pTunes update two nights ago. When I went to use pTunes It would not run continousely and when I went to use other aps the TX would freeze. I deleted pocket tunes and reinstalled the old and the update again. As soon as the update was on I had the same symptoms. I uninstalled again and rebooted my pc. I installed the old and the update again and know everything works fine. I have no idea what caused it to load improperly but was glad when it started working on the third try.

Thank you for all your replies. I 'm sorry I have taken so long to respond. Could not get to the problem until this evening. Tried the warm reset.

Command bar still did not work and WiFi icon disappeared from the command bar. I then tried looking at apps that might want to restart on reset and discovered I could open nothing, get a launch error 'The app cannot be launched because of a system error.'

Did a regular soft reset and still no command bar access but I have everything else back.

I'm suspecting digitizer as I have had to press on the extreme bottom of the command icons to get a response for awhile now. I've tried with screen protector removed and after cleaning around the edges of the screen. I do have some small dead spots on the digitizer and have been experiencing more difficulty when tapping icons on the screen.

Baring any other suggestions I think I will hard reset over the weekend and if that doesn't improve things I will be sending it to someone for a digitizer replacement.

If you guys have any other tricks I should try please let me know.

Again thank you all.

I replaced mine with a glass digi when the deadspot got the size of a quarter :D

its a relativly easy job to replace the digitizer :D
