View Full Version : 8GB SDHC on Palm TX and FAT32

I have several questions regarding the 8GB SDHC and FAT32.
1. I've been seeing online that Palm TX has a FAT32, and when I checked it, I did see one in my TX. Although people have claimed that the reason why SDHC cards don't work with TX is because it doesn't have FAT32. I will need then to install Dmitry's patch so I can get SDHC cards to work with my TX. I'm confused then. What's the difference between the TX FAT32 and the FAT32 that Dmitry got from a Palm Lifedrive and modified for the use in other models?
2. Unless I'm missing something here, such as the fact that I've always seen people talk about testing the patch only with 4GB cards... (or describing it to work with 4GB cards.) In which case, what's the difference between a 4GB SDHC card and an 8 GB SDHC card apart from the apparent difference in size?
3. Another possibility would be that I don't know how to install Dmitry's patch. And I've been searching over three days for instructions, but I couldn't find it. I'm a first time visitor of this website, and I've never really bothered with SDHC cards until I realized that it's probably safer to separate my music and video files from the programs that I also intend to keep in an external memory. (This only came to me after experiencing so many TX crashes and not having a laptop recently, because the motherboard of my HP got fried.) As far as I know, I think I should move the patch first to my external memory. With regard to removing the FAT32 in my TX and replacing it with the patch, I am completely lost.
Thanks.

to use a 8gb sdhc card you need
1. slot driver supporting sdhc
2. fat32 driver
treo 680 has both
tx has #2, but not #1

Then is it as simple as copying the 680 slot driver to a Tx? What is the name of this slot driver file please?

do that, and enjoy a nice reset cycle, not fixable by warm reset, only by hard reset
:)
if ti were that simple i wouldn't have spent weeks trying to make it work :)

I appreciate your advice. I though I remembered something about it not being so simple. But, your last post "left the door adjar a bit". So I wanted the point made for others if there wasn't a way to do it. Personally, I was hoping the answer would have been different.
Thanks

What was the problem?
The code isn't hardware compatible.

the door is never fully closed, it is that just at some point opening it becomes too much of a hassle to be worth it

Recently, i baugth a palm TX an i try to use it with a 8GB SDHC TRANSCEND.
0 - When i put an SD 256M in the slot it's ok,
1 - When i put the 8GB card in the slot, there is no action, no bip,
2 - Card info say "no card",
3 - With filez, i have file name FAT32,
4 - I have done a reset to clear all data, select the language, do a hot sync ... and the FAT32 file is already installed,
5 - With filez, it's impossible to remove-it or to change creator id or read only flag.
Is there a solution for my plam to accept the 8GB SDHC card ?

T|X's can only handle only SD cards, and up to 4GB only.
If you want to use SDHC cards, you're best luck would be Dmitry's SDHC driver. I believe it's called PowerSDHC or something like that.
Go to his website (http://palmpowerups.com/news.php) for more info about it.

Dmitry's SDHC driver is the only way to us an SDHC card with a T|X. I also recommend checking out all his software that is compatiable with a T|X and DGOS.

I just want to say that PowerSDHC definitely works. I am using a 16gb SDHC card with my Palm TX. I have the entire 2nd season of Lost on it along with over 2gb of MP3s. I would recommend the software to anyone, it's worth paying for.

Out of the box, the Palm TX only supports SD cards (maximum 2 Gig), not SDHC cards (4 Gig up to ... well currently up to 32 Gig). So you can normally only use a maximum 2 Gig card in the TX (there are a very few very rare 4 Gig SD cards).
As everyone else has said, Dmitry's PowerSDHC driver, available on his PalmPowerUps (http://www.palmpowerups.com/news.php) site, provides SDHC support for the Palm TX. Actually PowerSDHC currently supports the following devices:
* Palm TX
* LifeDrive
* Tungsten T5
* Tungsten E2
* Zire 72
* Zire 31
* Tungsten C
I'm currently running Dmitry's PowerSDHC driver and a class 6 (super fast) 8 Gig SDHC card in my TX and loving it. I actually get faster response from the new 8 Gig card than I was getting on my 2 Gig card.
Check out all of Dmitry's (http://www.palmpowerups.com/news.php) software, he does great work!
I've been getting some odd behavior with a Kingston 8GB class 6 SDHC card read via PowerSDHC on my Palm TX.
1. NVBackup 1.21 won't write to the card when PowerSDHC 1.2.0.0 is installed. The backup appears to go fine. But use FileZ to look in the backup folder and you see nothing stored in there.
2. Resco Viewer will only show 5 icons, and display 5 pictures, in a .RAB album on the card. The album in fact contains at least 30. I turned off icon caching on the card, but that didn't help.
3. When I connect to the PC via DriveMode, I see the Palm as a separate drive, H, of size 8GB; but I also see three extra drives, K, L, and M, all of size 0.
4. CardInfo and Filez tell me that the card is only 4GB in size --- despite the fact that Windows 2000 formatted it to 8GB, and shows me 8GB in the properties window.
My Windows 2000 PC will format the card (32K clusters) without problems. It will copy files onto the card without a qualm. It will read files from the card without issue.
On the Palm, with PowerSDHC running, I had no problem saving a small textfile onto the card using Tjepwriter. I had no problem exporting a BMP from tealpaint onto the card. I have no problem reading ebooks stored on the card. But NVBackup 1.21 and Resco Viewer can't work with it. Any ideas please?
Cheers.

1src does not allow all-capital posts, icefireicefire. I know how you feel....instead you can try to make text size large, and use red font so same emphasis :)

Or you can uncapitalize one or two letters :).
icefire: thanks, I guessed that was it, but put in the 4GB point anyway for completeness.
dmitry: cheers, I will try that tonight.
I found the problem! In CleanStart. Where I'd cleverly disabled a bunch of applications whose function I did not know. Fixed that. Disabled now are only those apps I'm certain don't need to know about reset. NVBackup 1.21 and RescoViewer 2.51.1 work fine with PowerSDHC 1.2.0.0 now.
Here's what's disabled now: PowerSDHC works fine without them.

So which applications should NOT be disabled for SDHC to work properly??
I spoke too soon :-(
NVBackup will backup without problems. And RescoViewer will display images.
But when I update an NVBackup, even with everything enabled in CleanStart, I get "error writing output" repeatedly. NVBackup then freezes if I try to open it. And FileZ refuses to delete the folder with the corrupt backup.
Merde.

seeing as you're the only one havnig problems, out of thousands of users (me included), i am tempted to say that it's time for a hard reset for you...

The issue may come from a corrupted card. Try formatting it first, it is easier than hard reset. I have no issue with NVBackup and PowerSDHC. Actually I have no issue with PowerSDHC at all.

I am having "lost clusters" problem with my 8GB Adata and SDHC.. Not very common, but they do occur after 1-2 weeks of useage. :confused:
The card isn't corrupted. I've formatted it repeatedly without problems.
Nor could it be PowerSDHC because, as dmitry and you point out, everyone else is using it without problems.
Somewhere in my pda is a demented application which has taken it upon itself to censor my writes to the card. Grr. Sigh. I love 8GB. Especially since Palm is being horrible and not making a replacement for the TX. But hard reset and check is such a hassle!
Oh well. Needs must.
Thanks Dmitry. Hard reset worked excellently. Took me a day and a half to reinstall everything from scratch, checking continuously. But not a hiccup. PowerSDHC works perfectly. NVBackup backs up amazingly fast. Updates even faster. No sign of any error.
Which is mystifying. I've reinstalled almost everything that was deleted. Why was the pda complaining before? The only software not yet installed is,
mobipocket
2PlayMe
Drive Mode
ClipExtend
Graffiti State Indicator
Ak Stylus Test
Bombel
Shuffle
VFSMark
Surely none of them would affect PowerSDHC. Maybe I installed it wrong the first time? I remember, the first time was without a key. And without a card either. On the next couple of tries I soft reset immediately after copying it over from a card. Maybe these are bad things to do?
Still, I learned a couple of useful lessons. When reinstalling software after a hard reset:
1. Install FontSmoother on its own, not with a bunch of other files. It starts installing itself in the middle of hotsync otherwise!
2. Set the backup bits of WarpSpeed and its database. Otherwise it won't survive a hard reset.

araj,
I've experienced this. My TX was getting unstable - frequent hangs/resets. Did a hard reset. Reinstalled (not restored) everthing again - result one stable and happy TX. Hard reset followed by restoring did not work - ie. still unstable. Must be something lurking in the NVFS that only gets removed on a hard reset/reinstall.

Araj,
Did you re-install CleanStart? Did you disable the same programs and is CleanStart working OK?
Thanks
cheers, tegodwin.
DatesOnMyPalm: I'm playing it safe. I installed CleanStart, but I only disabled the Addit, VersaMail and Web applications. I didn't touch anything else -- not even things like AdditSync or AdditVault.
Sadly the problem's not fixed; now it's intermittent.
Most times NVBackup will backup fine. Most times it will update fine. But every now and then (twice now, in about 15 backups) it freezes. I can't figure out why. A backup that went fine a few days ago froze when it was being deleted yesterday. Another scheduled backup a few days before that froze for no obvious reason. But most of my backups complete without problems, as do most of the scheduled updates (and way faster at that than with my 1GB SD card.)
The obvious explanation is the TX was maybe clearing memory and I overreacted; but I waited something like 20min before resetting for the first freeze.
It's not fatal or anything -- just puzzling. I soft reset when NVBackup freezes. NVBackup then freezes every time it's launched until the offending backup folder is deleted. For that I need a card reader and a PC because FileZ refuses to delete the problem folder. So it's not a major hassle; just a mild pity that these two marvelous pieces of software don't, sometimes, on my machine, get along.
The next step is to hard reset and install software one by one and wait and see between installations for problems. But that'll cripple my TX past Xmas. This is no way important enough for that.
