View Full Version : Magic of TH55

Good time of day!
Two days ago I`ve got my TH55/E1.
And here`s my story.
Some time ago I became a job, which requires to keep in mind many meetings , so I decided to get me a PDA. With the Palm OS, I don`t like the other side ( I had some experience with HP iPaq 1950 ), it just doesn`t suit me.
I haven`t even heard about Sony`s Clie handlends, so I wanted Palm E2 or TX. I read hundreds of reviews, and then I came upon it. The TH55. Yes, it`s old, it has no more support, only used avaliable, but I just falled in love! So I managed to buy one from ebay, not much used, cosmetically very good. I`m happy now, I think it`s truly masterpiece among gadgets, even now, on the beginning of 2008. So I`m in the club :D

But there`s few thing, that are worrying me. First, it`s the backlight. It`s a bit dim as for me, compared to Tungsten E, full brightness on the TH matches only about 60% of the Tungsten. Is it abnormal? Second, it`s battery. The BatteryTime 1.8.4. resulted with 3.35. I doubt, that I can get Sony OEM battery now, would be this one http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEBX:IT&item=150192089323&_trksid=p3984.cALLBUY.m311.lVI
better then my?
Thanks for attention

Hello and welcome to the Clič side ;)

About battery you should read this post:
http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?t=122472

IMHO the LG battery as the one that is being sold from the link you provided is the best choice at eBay, most users report discharging times over 4:30 hours.

The backlight is about the same brightness as my Clie T665 on max, but faaaar dimmer when on minimum.
It's handy because I can crank it to max to use when daylight isn't enough to reflect on the screen, and drop it down to min at night so reading books in bed doesn't fry my eyes ;)

It is dimmer on max than Palm's tend to be, so Palms might be easier to look at in bright light, but Palms minimum brightness is not nice on the eyes in the dark either, so it's horses for courses or whatever that phrase was... :D

Say, thanks for the info on the screen brightness of the TH55. I really like the low brightness for middle of the night reading so that I don't wake my partner... also for astronomy uses so that I don't ruin my dark adaptation. Currently, I'm using an SJ33. I have a TJ37, but that screen is MUCH TOO BRIGHT at night. It sounds as if the TH55 has much lower brightness... that intrigues me.

Not to hijack the thread, but what's the TH55's camera like vs. the tj37's? I hope better!

You know you can use apps to lower the brigtness. I read books at around 20 percent brightness! As for the camera, I believe they are identical.

Is there any particular program you recommend for lowering brightness? I tried a bunch with my T3 and discovered that none worked... but I haven't resurrected them to try on the TJ37. Would like some tips for sure on which have a good rep , don't crash, and won't hurt the hardware!

Yes. The built-in Adjust Brightness button, below the Menu button when you have the VG up.

If you want it even dimmer, DG write a little utility that takes thescreen brightness down to even lower levels!!

The TH55 camera is only VGA (640x480) but it is surprisingly good quality, espescially compared to the one on my shiny new N800 (Bloody awful camera... so much noise!!) and also can see near-IR as well (I sometimes use it for testing remote controls at work :D)

Yeah, before the camera died and only gives you "media errors"...

Heh, one of the marks of a veteran TH55 user, along with loosing half the screws :D

Luckily the camera thing is usually a fairly easy fix (If requiring some bravery... or handy a DanT :D)

Alas I doubt I can fix the N800's camera so easily :(
(It's okay in bright sunlight, but in-doors it's 40% noise! )

I should ask PCQ what the N810 camera is like... it's not on an adjustable stalk, so hopefully they used better components...

Actually, all my screws are intact so far.

I saw my friend's TH55 lose half of it's screws, before I got mine(I was on my NX back then). So for the first year of having my TH55, I tighten up the screws from time to time, and now they are just tight enough to hold on there for a long time to come :D

Yet, the interesting thing is that the TH won't fall apart even if you lose all the screws, as there are so many tight latches on the case. A nice design that makes the screw flaw not as critical.

Lower than the one available in the brightness bar, 1 pixel up from "backlight off"?

Yes, they may be loose but at least you still have all of your screws (unlike your marbles). ;) :D

Dimitry's (ie DG) Brightness Fix software can be found here:
http://www.palmpowerups.com/downloads.php?cat_id=2

It "removes lower limit of brightness slider." I noticed a big difference when I installed it (ages ago.)

Now back to my battery replacement research lurking!

Thanks!

Turns out I was already running the screen as dimly as it's happy at (using BrightnessDA), any lower and it either flickers regularly, or flickers when touching it :)

Cyker
01-31-2008, 01:18 PM
Yeah; When you get to those brightness (Or should I say dimmness :D) levels, even small fluctuations in the power draw of the TH55 affect the screen! (WiFi traffic is one of the biggest ;))

So, returning this thread to its origins,
I have received my battery from VincentChon, it took exactly two weeks from Makau to Europe.
My result with Battery Time 1.84 is 4.48, I`m happy!
Thanks, Vincent!

Sorry to unravel the thread again... do those various brightness reducers work with the TJ37, too?

Great news on the battery, that's for sure!
