Just purchased my third clie ux50. I have been using this particular device now almost as long as Sony put it out. While I have tried many other devices since the ux50 came out I still have not found one that can replace it. At this point I am getting pretty paranoid about this device. About two years ago I bought a replacement one since my original was, it appeared, starting to have issues. After about a year the replacement one died. So I went back to the original one and it has been working great ever since last week where I finally started getting the screen whine. While I realize the whine is not necessarily bad I really cannot afford to be without this device so I purchased another one today on ebay. According to the seller who had a very positive rating the device is like new. I am crossing my fingers and hoping that this is true (it cost 250 dollars which is really quite expensive for a device that is how many years old now but still if it truly is like new then I will count myself lucky). My plan is to store the new one until the current one dies and or appears to be on its last dying breaths and then replace it with the ebay one.

Anyway, thought I would share my insanity with the rest of you.

You aren't alone Dag3... :D I also have two Sony Clie UX50's and two Extended Batteries! :)

Sasmout... I upgraded to the UX50 from the TG50! I can also say the same about my TG50's of which I have two! Unfortunately the memory Stick slot on one of them no longer works but my wife still uses the other one!

I too can't see myself without the UX50! I just purchased myself a Centro for Christmas! I plan on s l o w l y transferring all of my information from my UX50 over to the Centro in hopes of it becoming my primary device although I am hesitant!

What do you think? Is the Centro capable of replacing the UX50?

I must also be at least equally insane.
I am constantly playing around with these Clies and Palms.
Most of the time , i am using a TH55 as my main device, but from time to time I switch to another thing. I like the TX for its sheer power, but I always come back to the Clies, either the UX50 or the TH55.

My dream PDA would be a UX50 with the same battery life as a TH55. I would buy 3 of them and could sell all my other PDAs...

But I would miss the big screen of the TH55, the incredibly bright srceen of the VZ90, what about the T3's slider, the NZ90's camera ... arrgghhh ... I am insane !!!! Uncurable ...

What is funny is that for me, what makes the clie ux50 the absolute best is primarily the keyboard. I love the clam shell design. Last year I bought the zaurus c3200 because hardware wise, for me it was perfect. Unfortunately the software options are just not there.

I have been thinking lately what really makes a great pda and really, the ux50 meets so many of my criteria.

For me the ideal pda would have:
1. the form factor of the ux50
2. Palm Os (of course cannot stand windows)
3. The same battery life that I get from the ux50 with the extended battery attached.
4. lots of ram (at least 128 megs of ram)
5. an sd card slot
6. perhaps a bit more power then the ux50 but honestly that is lower on my list nothing I run really needs more power.
7. A keyboard with the "{" and "}" keys.

I will stay with TH-55 because of the lighted writing area. My TG-50 is neglected because the keyboard is an acquired skill and frustration with grafiti 2 keeps me returning to the touchscreen keyboard.

Why would someone need a keyboard like ux-50? Because there is no reliable substitute keyboard and clamshells protect things quite a bit? Well the TH-55 feels heavy at times and UX-50 is pushing the pocketability limit.

Well when I converted to larger screens and high res, I was glad to make that move.If they make the linux Asus more available maybe I will move there for the larger screen...
