View Full Version : saving NX memory - which files can I delete?

On my NX, I'm trying to save as much of my memory as possible.

I'm using LauncherX's file browser to look at files in memory (as opposed to the Memory Stick). Sorting by largest size, I see the following possible junk files:

Welcome (713k)

PhotoStand_Resource (638k)

_PhotoEditor_editing_da... (600k)

MMFlashLib (582k)  [I never plan to use the Flash Player.]

ClieAlbum, PhotoStand, and other apps I have no use for (I use SplashPhoto).

Is it safe to delete any or all of these? That would save a lot of my 11 Mb (so I can load large Mapopolis maps from the MS).

Thanks for any help!

I'm sure it would be safe to delete most of thse, but at the moment it can't be done. They're in ROM and cannot be deleted. Brayder (http://www.brayder.com) makes a utility called JackSprat which is supposed to be able to delete ROM programs when used in conjunction with their JackFlash flash-formatting utility. However, a version that supports OS 5 has yet to be released. Their web site says by the end of January. We'll see.

In ROM - that's what I suspected.

However, the "_PhotoEditor_editing_data" file looks like it may just be a temporary file used by PhotoEditor, and if so, is probably in RAM, not ROM. It's 600k.

Anyone tried deleting that one? I could sure use that 600k back, and I never use PhotoEditor.

Used LauncherX's Info icon to confirm that the "_PhotoEditor_editing_data" file is in RAM, but don't want to mess up PhotoEditor.

I'm hoping it's a temporary file that PhotoEditor creates on the fly. If no one else has tried nuking it, I'll do a backup and try it myself tonight.

Another application that can be deleted from the ROM is the Clie Demo.  It's over 1MB.

JackSprat is a great program and should be part of the Clie software bundle.

Yeah right Sony really want you to mess with the locked files in the ROM...
That's why the locked it up!!!
I wouldn't hold my breath to see if you get any company, Palm, Sony, HandSpring,
whoever to bundle anything resembling a utility that will help you delete ROM files...

Maybe you think they wouldn't mind if we re-write the OS while were at it.

Yes, you can delete it! I have done it several times. It's a temporary file created when you use PhotoEditor.

Thanks Larry, I just nuked it and now have 4.5 Mb free. Aaahh.

Deleting this and a few other unneeded files let me load my 3.5 Mb San Diego County map in Mapopolis. Sweet!

I love it when a plan comes together...

Will the file come back once you use Photo Editor? Or is Photo Editor useless once you delete this file?

Looks like PhotoEditor just recreates the file as needed, so nuke it when you need the extra space.
