I am looking for a utility (whether hack, DA or other) that would indicate to me whether the backlight is on or off.
Having an additional feature to switch the backlight on or off would be nice, but this can be done from a lot of other places.

I am wondering if such a utility exists since I find it really difficult to tell whether the backlight is on or off under bright lighting conditions (ie. sunlight!).

I had one before. It would display a message saying "Backlight Off" or "Backlight On" whenever you turned it off or on. I'll do a search for it.

Thanks OcellNuri
I saw this piece of software a while ago and suffered nasty resets (which I saw on my 615). But it looks like he has fixed up a couple of issues and reposted it (and forgot to increment the version!).

I'll load it up into the Palm now...

Here's another, but it takes a step to see if the light is on. This gives you a backlight indicator in the "command stroke" area at the bottom of each screen. Do the command stroke and a little light bulb appears. If it is is yellow, the light is on. It's red when the light is off. Plus, tapping the little bulb toggles the backlight. It also adds an "off" button, if desired. The Off preferences are addressed via the PalmOS Preferences screens. I've been using it for about a year (on my N610c and now my T665) with no issues at all.
