Hello All,

I am newly back to the Palm family—my last device was a Clie N710c. I just purchased a TX. I am a little confused about moving files to the card.

I have installed Resco Explorer, FileZ, NV Backup, Softik Explorer II, and the NeatFreak Pack (uninstall manager, ngundo, onguard, cleanup). Which one of these apps do I need and which can I do without? When I try to use Explorer to move the files all I see is ‘Copy To’. I would like an app that just tells me to choose the application to move to the card and it moves all the files with it.

Maybe I am missing something here since I’ve been away from this stuff so long. I used to have the time to spend hours figuring out how to use apps. But now that I’m a grandmother, I need stuff to work like the toaster—put the bread in and push the button. Thanks for any help that anyone can give me. It is really good to know that lots of you are continuing hard and dedicated work to make these little devices do all that they can do.

With Resco Explorer go ahead and choose the "Copy To" and when the next window pops up, the option to choose either Copy or Move is there. There are also 2 different tree views in RE - if you look down near the bottom of the right scroll bar you'll see a little sqaure made of 4 other squares - tap that to toggle between the 2 views. In one tree view you'll see the files organized by application & in the other you'll see the files just listed indepently (although you can sort by type, creator ID or size, etc...) If you choose the applicational organization it's easy to see and choose all of the files for a particular app and then all you need to do is multi-select all the files to move.

As for which apps you absolutely need the only ones are NVBackup and one of the file managers. I use Resco Explorer for my file manager, it's very powerful. However, I used Filez and uniCMD (both free) for a long time before that - the combination of Filez & uniCMD do what RescoExplorer does in one app.

I personally recommend against NeatFreak/Uninstall things. I've really messed up my pda by using one when it deleted a file that other apps depended on. Granted, things may have changed since I last tried and perhaps they are less aggressive as to what they delete when uninstalling. That said - you really don't need an uninstall manager if you just use NVBackup :D If you make a quick backup of your device before installing any new software -> try out the software and discover you don't want to keep it -> just restore from you NVBackup and you're right back where you started in exactly the same state as before you tried out the software.

I mostly agree with PCQ. I know what you mean about just having something that works. I've always said that computers should be like telephones - pick them up and they work. Unfortunately that's not the case. I own Uninstall Manager, NGUndo, Cleanup and Resco Explorer. RE is a must (or FileZ, although RE is better IMHO). UM I still use sometimes, but as PCQ says - with caution. NGUndo is a piece of junk. Use NVBackup often and you will never need anything else.

WHile we are in this discussion, what do you think of OnGuard -- I also have NG's Neat Freak Pack, so I am wondering..
I personally hope that Back OFF will soon have the live Backup version. Then, I will not need OnGuard at all..

OnGuard is the only one of the neatfreak pack and possibly the only backup app I do not own. With that in mind it seems like a great app, I too certainly hope that Backoff! will have such a feature - in which case I may buy it. :) (one can never have too many backups!)

NVbackup is the only backup app I use now, it beats every other backup in its class. :D

Backoff is a new class of backup sollutions and is one I too am thinking of purchacing.

I certainly agree with everyone about NVBackup. However, perhaps I've just been lucky, but I've been very happy thus far with Uninstall Manager and the Cleaner (I bought them together, though I've used Uninstall Manager more). When I've asked UM to remove an app and all associated files, it has done so flawlessly (knock on wood :) ). I have also made use of its sandbox feature, where you can try out an app you're not sure about without running the risk of its screwing up your Palm.

For transferring files to my card (or vice versa), I've used the file manager built into ZLauncher, which I bought after trying out Resco Explorer and not finding it to my liking (there were too many features I didn't think I needed, and I also found ZLauncher easier to use out of the box). However, it turns out I don't use a lot of the features of ZLauncher, either. I tend to use it primarily to transfer files from my PalmTX to the card.

I think that if the live aspect is implemented, that version may go commercial.

Also in terms of moving files PowerRun is a good alternative. It moves all files that a particular app needs to the \card\palm\programs\powerrun\<appname> directory and leaves a pointer of 2-4k in RAM. This is just like setting the bundle bit on necessary files and moving them to a separate directory except it is a lot easier.

Thanks everyone for your great suggestions. I will take heed and use UM with care. I'm still not too happy with RE. I used to use PowerRun in the old days. Think I will give that another look.
