I just found out something very cool !!!!
You can look at actual aerial photos in www.mapquest.com
You can zoom in/out, pan left/right.
Just enter an address (or just a city, or whatever) and display a map.
Then click the tab which shows aerial photos.
You can zoom in on the street where you live !!!
Also click the box which shows "BIG PHOTO" in the upper
right corner, so you can see a larger view.
HAVE A BLAST !!!!

After you display a "normal map", just look at the top of the map.
There are two tabs above the map.
One says "STREET MAP".
The other says "AERIAL PHOTO".

It seems to be able to show the entire planet from a distance, but it doesn't always let you zoom in close on all areas of the planet.
I tried various areas in the United States, and I was able to zoom very close, to where I could see streets and buildings.
But I tried areas in Europe, and I could only get a distant view.
I guess it depends on where you live to determine how useful it is to you.
But it is still very cool !!!

It's pretty amazing how close a view you can get, considering it's being photographed from a satellite.

Yes ... I guess it isn't updated every day.
But these AERIAL photos are AMAZING !
I was looking at San Francisco and Los Angeles.. and the close-up pictures are in COLOR !!! And they look fantastic!
I just displayed a MAP of Los Angeles. Then I shifted the map over towards the beach. Then I switched to the AERIAL PHOTO view.. And I just continued to shift the view upwards towards Malibu so I could see all the sites along the beach, including the big houses with pools and tennis courts. They are not super close up, but you can recognize the pools and tennis courts, and they are in color.
And you can easily switch back and forth between the MAP and the AERIAL PHOTO.
One thing I did learn, that is if you MISPELL a city name when you are entering the address to display, it will only find the center of the state, and you will not see the AERIAL PHOTO tab above the map.
You must spell the City name correctly to see the AERIAL PHOTO tab.
