and hardware units with OS6 won't make it to market till middle of 2004. this means if Sony plans to come out with next version of NX70 this year, it's still going to have OS5, which means it'll be outdated soon after it reaches the masses.
This really bothers me that whatever Palm PDA we buy now will be obsolete within a year, since we not only have to deal with Sony coming out with new models every 6 months, we'll also have to deal with PalmOS versions going out of date every year or so.

arghhhh!!! the problem with the technology moving too fast... my wallet cannot keep up with it.

on a side note, unfortunately the first release of tapwave will also be OS5. so it'll be hard to decide whether to buy this first generation unit or wait till the 2nd gen on OS6...

I think everyone pretty much knows the next Clie will be OS5.2.

There are a few that seemed to think OS6 would coming out tomorrow :).

Thanks for updates!

They want us to keep spending money.

Yeah, I understand your pain.

I have decided that I can last about two years if I buy a good palm. I have the nx70 and I have a year and a half to go. I purchased it at Best Buy and I bought the extended warantee that they have and pray that something goes wrong with mine. I didn't have to pray too hard. In the top corner, there is a pixel that stays blue when it should be black. So I already talked to Best Buy and they will give me a new PDA when I return mine. I will wait until right before the 2 years are up or until my clie is completely out of date, then, I'll return it for a brand new upgraded clie. Then I plan to get another warantee and keep doing the same....I wonder how long I can do this.

:)

You know, I never understand this concept people have of outdated. Sure its not the latest technology, but nothing will ever be the latest technology. If you kept waiting for something that would never be outdated you would be old, lonely and without anything. Just because something new comes out does not mean that it is outdated. I have an 486 computer that I keep around because it runs dos programs much better than these latest Windows versions do and it works fine. Technically the technology is not as advanced as these newer computers, but I certainly don't find it outdated seeing as it works fine for what I need it for. Innovation is great, but people still drink water even though there are supercharged mineral beverages out there. Just because its older doesn't mean its outdated.

I think the issue is will the OS 5.2 and OS 6 be compatable with our NX's and will Sony update them - and that if we start the group preassure now maybe there will be such updates.

before I bought the NX online I emailed them asking if it will run OS 6 - and they told me it will if updated.

Again, like I have said, all the more reason to avoid any new NX especially if you already have one. This is a bridge model and historically such models in ALL electronics have the lowest resale value. Buy an NX70 now for $360, sell it next year for $260...and lose $100. Buy and NX80 for $500 and sell it in a year for $300 and lose $200. Just wait people, dont reward Sony for nothing...

Does the NX allow for flash upgrades, or will more sony updates eat more of te RAM?

Palm releases an upgrade and it's for the flashable ROM......

I still have my OS4 Clie' and unless SONY releases a PXA255 Clie' with Flash player 6 and more memory then a pathetic 32 megs, there's no reason for me to upgrade.

I'm pretty sure I can wait for 6. But then maybe I should just wait for 6.5 or 7.

The original poster said hardware units won't be available with OS6 til mid 2004. I think it would only be 3 months after OS release, so maybe march 2004.

Sounds good to me. By then Intel should be shipping their 600-800 Mhz PXA255.

Palm OS5 seems to be new and still not so perfect. Seems to me that Palm OS6 is more like Palm OS 5.3 or maybe 5.5...

I see where you're going, but OS5 is only a transitional OS. OS6 will be completely different, kind of like Win2k compared to Win98, or OSX compared to OS9.

My feeling is that there will be at least one more OS5 update before 6 is released.
