View Full Version : Dying Platform

I don't have the time to log in as I used to. I still have a 80v and a T750.

I prefer the Palm platform, forced to use the T750 for work.

What I don't see is any news about the Palm platform or Palm apps. I view this as a signal of a dying platform. Am I wrong?

as long as I use a platform it is not dead to me

It is dying in terms of development, so 1src.com isn't the exciting place it used to be.

Yet, in terms of personal use, my Clie still works very smooth and reliable.

But sure, with Dmitry on board, development is not completely dead :)

Now if only the same could be said of Palm Desktop...

Dying in terms of development... and yet we've had about 10 new apps specifically for the TX in the past month, just in these forums?

Clie seems to be on the downswing, except that there's still lots of people using their Clies.

As soon as Dmitry finally gives up on PalmOS, THAT is when I'm going to conclude that the platform has plateaued. This doesn't mean dying, just that all the apps that are rewarding to write have been written.

After all, you wouldn't say that the market for Toasters is dying just because there haven't been any major new features in the past 10 years would you?

The toaster analogy really does not apply to computers. In the computer world a platform that does not improve dies. The Palm platform may not be dying but it is shrinking because Palm is just not keeping up. It will probably not die but become a small niche product, in the face of Windows Mobile expanding.

Yes; the Palm will become the next Newton/Clie :)

Yup! Its interesting to see that even newer platforms offer PalmOS compatibility of some degree or another (StyleTap for WM and (eventually) Symbian, garnetVM for arm-based linux).

I prefer the PalmOS. But the powers that be didn't keep up with tech while continue to give us simplicity. The platform is software AND hardware. Fewer NEW PalmOS handhelds. No way to fix existing units. Sorry, platform is dead.

I have a 200LX sitting in my desk that arguably is every bit as useful day-to-day as MANY lower end PDAs today. Still works, but DEAD as a door nail as a platform.

How can you say DOS is dead? ;)

Windows Mobile is not the platform to put the final nail in the coffin for Palm. It is and will be the iPhone as it evolves.

Windows is like having a supercar that once started is all OK but in order to start you need to push it, run alongside, hop onto the car and then get it to run on 2nd gear. If it doesn't you'll have to try several times until the trick is achieved, unless you happen to hit a climb, in which case you'll have to turn back. Meantime, Palm, which is the six year-old supercar of yore, runs laps around you poking fun at you.

Trust me! Been pushing my super Smartphone ever since I got it a few months back. ;)

Outside of North America, Palm, WinMob, RIM and yes, even Apple - powered devices remain something of a novel curiosity for the fans, rather than a practical OS. Elsewhere, Linux and - most especially - Symbian OS devices rule. So to say that Palm is a dying platform is understating the issue.

Palm used go be the de facto handheld device and OS for professionals and enthusiasts alike (a close second Psion - now Symbian - in the UK) but now...

Thanks to ACCESS, who cares?

No offense, but the iPhone will have to get MUCH better to even break even. Concept is OK, execution D-.

Plus, Apple doesn't have the reach of MS. However, the concept CAN exist now with current tech. The iPhone, however, isn't it.

Supercars ........ ahhhhh, now you're speaking my language. But WM is not like modern day supercars. The modern day supercars start and run quite well. WM just doesn't run well ......... period. Slow, get 'stuck'. Bugs.

No offense taken!

What do you mean by execution D-? I've been playing with one for the past few days and it works wonderfully. The touch screen is the best I've ever seen on any device. The UI is incredibly easy to use, fast and I'm yet to crash or hang it.

My only grip has to do with the lack of applications for the phone and the so, so usefulness of the web apps that apple promotes on their website. As I've said in my previous post, it needs to evolve.

As for WM not being a supercar, yeah! I must correct that: It's a supercar with jell-O suspension, automatic transmission that works opposite of your wishes and has this big iron of an engine with huge cubic inches of displacement but with a hilarious specific power output. On top of that, all that power that it produces cannot be correctly translated into the rear axle without incurring into dangerous tail-spinning. But at least it gets Bluetooth telephony, sat-nav, and WiFi when it works its best: standing still!

Better now? ;)

I left palm a couple of years ago, for windows mobile 2003. I had an M505 back then. I bought a Toshiba E335 also ipaq 1940- I was impressed and used it daily. But I finally got fed up with always clearing up the memory- and there wasn't too many applications that interested me either. Then I found the Tungsten C- with wifi. After cracking the screen, I switched to the TX- but had to go back the TC. I also have a smartphone with WM5. And a friend has the Iphone and Itouch. And I can HONESTLY say, that my TC can do it all. I know it doesn't have bluetooth, but I don't use it- so can't say I miss it. I for one, welcome technology. I like to try new things. But I tell you what, I am not impress with the Iphone or Itouch at all! My friend, thinks its the greatest thing, but she never owned a palm or ppc. That is what is happening today. This people who are so awed with the iphone never had a palm or pushed the potential of one. Conclusion, maybe the company (palmone) might bankrupt, but the concept will not. And as long as their are developers like dmitrygr, palm will be around.
